I need a little help with this....

M'kay, i went to my friends house and he opened up this folder, and voila! theres like 4 movies in wma format in the folder. he clicks on one, and it starts playing the movie. absolutely no dvds in the disc drive. so what im asking is, how do you get movies to permanently stay on your computer, like rip em onto your hardrive. is there a way? I asked him how he did it but he says his older bro did, so im like, "wateva im not messing with your older brother" so can someone gimme a hint or somethin?

Re: I need a little help with this....

Ripping DVD movies is illegal.

I'd also like to know how those 'movies' were in wma format. Considering that's an Windows Media Audio File.

But really, if you want to know something. Google it.

You guys are confusing video copyright law with music copyright law.

Change the word movies to music and DVD to cd. It is 100% illegal to make any copy of any video that is copyrighted (without consent). This means recording a tv show, or ripping a DVD to your computer. This only applies to the US though. Canadians are safe.

Also Daveigus, DVD shrink will only convert the DVD into an IFO (if it's anything like DVD Dycrypter). You will not be able to watch this on the computer. If you want to watch the DVD on your computer, and your Canadian, follow this article.

Actually, now that I think of it, zeldask8r0990, your friend probably just downloaded the movies using limewire or some other P2P. Or he just found a torrent.

Re: I need a little help with this....

Well, you can use any P2P system (preferably Ares or LimeWire), as oizys mentioned, to download movies fully. However, as I have also experienced this, the movies might screw up at some point sometomes while playing the movie, so just make sure that after you download it you don't have it (possibly by clicking on the parts of the movie quickly at random. That's how I did it).

Somehow I doubt that it's illegal to "record a TV show" as you mentioned, or DVR's, DVDR's, and VCR's wouldn't be legal either.

Actuall, all those products are supposed to be for your own personal video's that you create. The companies can make the product, it's you who breaks the law with it.

And actually, I'm not sure about the TV shows. Pretty sure that they're illegal to though.

We're also talking about the US too. Copyright laws are different everywhere.

Re: I need a little help with this....

You can't use a DVR to create your own video, it's sole purpose is to record television. Of course, this could be different, because you can't actually distribute any of it without a DVD recorder or a VCR.
