Vista

The new edition to the microsoft team has been getting many many praises. Id like to know if there are any people out there who already have Vista. Is it incredible and many many times better than your computer previously was? tell us about it. I want to know.

I have Vista. I don't see much difference, actually.

Except that it's harder to get to the files I want to see.

I mean to say that back in the old (don't know how old) days of Windows, I could just open up a folder quick-like, and see all the files on the system. Over time, Windows got fancier and fancier. I'm still getting used to Vista, so finding where my files are takes a little longer.

Vista is definitely prettier than the previous versions.

Is it faster or anything than the last programs.

Dude; computers are so fast now I can't tell the difference. And shouldn't that partly depend on the chip? I've got a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, so it might not be the fastest thing on the block.

My hope is that it can handle some hardcore MonteCarlo simulation, though, as I may need to do some analysis soon.

You'll need to get input from more experienced computer guys on how Vista's better/worse (I bet CAPT Cornflake would have an opinion).

Hah.

Actually, a friend of mine has Vista on his brand new laptop. Things are so unstable compared to XP it isn't even funny.

Trying to get the laptop's built-in card reader to read an SD card crashes Vista. That's probably the worst thing, right there. There's a ton of programs we were trying to use that ran fine in XP, that would run poorly or outright fail in Vista. (Or crash Vista.)

Performance-wise, things were a mixed bag. Some programs would take forever to load in Vista, but then would run fine afterwards.

The "Show Desktop" command is pretty retarded: Hitting it will show your desktop, but hide all of your desktop widgets. :/

Frankly, I'm staying away from it solely because of all the DRM "features" integrated into it, so all of these other problems are just icing on the "I'm sticking with XP Pro"-cake.

I got a new computer earlier this week (power cable died on my Gateway) and now am stuck with Vista. I didn't have any problem with getting the computer to accept by SD card, but I am suspicious that it takes longer for websites to load.

It isn't hard to wipe (or even partition) the drive and throw XP on. If/when you get sick of it, you still have options.

That's an idea. But...

I am absolutely petrified of adding/changing the OS. Generally, I don't even like adding programs unless absolutely, positively necessary (so far I've only added Office, MS Visio, and Mathcad... I may add Matlab sometime). The more you add, the more problems you encounter later... or at least, that's my fear.

Re: Vista

Hmm... From what I've heard about Vista it doesn't work with most printers as well, so is that true?

And, because I feel like being annoying and asking questions, why do all the computer stores only have Vista available if it's so much worse then XP?

Anyways, I've also had a chance to mess with Vista on a friend's computer. From what I saw, it's absolutely dreadful. It's hard to find stuff on it, and the version of Word that goes with it was so weird so that we couldn't find a file button to print something off. From what I've seen I'd say don't bother getting it. Paint was icky on the computer too, and the layout was weird...

And I have a random question. I have a big old Windows 98 with so many problems it barely works anymore, and it's gained yet another endlessly annoying problem recently. Is it worth getting Vista, or will that be even worse then Windows 98? (Yeah, I'm bothering to ask here because it came up as a problem recently and it's still on the same topic)

And, just wanting to say, often times it's not a question of whether or not a program is good. Often times the real question is "Is it better then what I already have?".

Re: Vista

I don't know whats wrong with everyone else but I like it fine. It hasn't slowed down my computr at all. It actually made things go a little faster. Finding files isn't hard and it doesn't bother me at all. But I do have one problem. Like Dog Dog said, most printers don't work with Vista. I have a printer with a scanner in it. The printer works fine but the scanner doesn't work.

Yeah, I'm on Vista, it's alright, not much better than XP. I've been thinking about changing back to XP.

The OS could basically be thought of as the brain of the software on your computer. It's a large deciding factor in how fast programs and other features load. See Vista's Superfetch, etc.

And my HP Express Upgrade for my laptop shipped today. The people who got theirs from the last shipment had a smooth and bump free install, unlike everyone upgrading from OEM or a retail packages. It should also be noted that most problems that people have with Vista are a result of the part manufacturers and software companies not having their hardware compatible for Vista in time. So most of the problems weren't caused by Microsoft, but by these people not getting ready soon enough.

Re: Vista

The rule of thumb I'd follow with new Microsoft operating systems is wait for the first Service Pack. Also known as the "let everyone else be the guinea pigs" approach.

You'd think all the beta testing would alleviate this... But there you go.

Re: Vista

The only thing I don't like Vista, is the way the windows load. Like when the Windows load they show it partially and then shows a little more and then finally it loads the up the whole Window. That bothers me. Most of the programs take forever load. Hopefully things will be kinked out with the service pack upgrades.
