.flv to .avi

OK, this is (hopefully) not too bad a problem, but I've grown tired of trying to find a solution, so maybe someone here can give me some advice.

A sibling of mine has decided that she wants to do some video editing using Windows Movie Maker. So, she's trying to find a way to download videos from YouTube to use for video editing.

Now, there are ways to download the .flv files, but WMM can't read those. I did find an online site that converts online .flv files to .avi and then puts them up for download. However, it uses DivX, which isn't playing nice with WMM.

So, anyone here have any free programs/websites/etc. that would actually allow this to work?

I pretty sure this will work >_>....

Just right click on a file and go on rename. Change the file type from MOVIE.flv to MOVIE.avi and it should work fine.

It works enough so that you can play it in Windows Media Player, but I don't know if it's in the right format for editing. You might need to actually convert it using some sort of converter, such as Total Video Converter. It's free (for 30 days, I think). The only drawback is that it puts a little ad at the top (a semi-transparent web address).

If that doesn't work, you might try Videora iPod Converter. I know, it says iPod, but it can convert to a few different formats. One or a few might work.

I beleive that if you can open the file in Flash, you can Export it as an AVI. I'm not totally sure, and you would need a $600 program, but there are other ways to get that ()

Ok go onto www.keepvid.com and put the URL of the video on YouTube into the bar and change the scroll down to YouTube and download as .flv, then download some software from Download.com called Riva Encoder and put the video into there, change the file path from .flv to .mpg or whatever and whalla, will re-encode after a while depending on how big the video is.
