Blu-ray discs are still not as commonly used (rarely in fact). I'm not getting any until several years later when the market has accepted this new technology fully.

I second that. I'm not paying a load of money for bad/primitive next generation disc technology, especially when there is a 50% chance that the format will fail. Even if I get a PS3, I won't neccessarily be buying all my movies on Blu-Ray format. I can live with my DVD quality and On Demand/HD Channels easily.

I probably won't be getting either for 5 years, minimum. Why? Because I see no need to, and I'm estimating that everything will be released on them and conventional DVD for at least as long. No point in speculating thousands of dollars on the two formats in the hopes that one will eventually catch on.

I don't think anyone needs 25Gbs for a movie or game just yet. But one day.

I don't see why people need 30 Gigs. for an HD-DVD, if thats the type of logic your using.

Buying a Blu-ray isn't a real risc for me, it's my dad who keeps updated with current technolgy. He's highly imformed on the system, maybe why he's buying it.

But eventually you'll have to switch, it's possible that later on that they may not port any movies to DVD.
The switch may take place in about 1, 2, or 3 years from now.

I don't see a need for either, however, if more storage is needed it's unlikely that 5x the current max will be what is required, 3x should be more then enough. Which then means that you can either pay more for a format which you won't use to it's full potential or less for a format that will be just as useful for years.

3 years? Try 5, at least. I'm fairly certain that VHS players still outnumber DVD players, so expecting everyone to just drop DVD for another new format, the benefit of which they won't see, will take longer then the optimists in the industry are predicting.

Unless they did a special price cut, promote the hell out of the Blu-ray, and basically show how good this new technology is, it's going to take a while for the market to accept it.

I hope you enjoy wasting your money. Or your father's at that.

I would at least wait to see what the prevailing format is, and to see what other companies will be backing which ever format.

If anything, I'd be getting a PS3 as my Blu-ray Player.

Re: Does anyone have Blu-ray disc player or HD-DVD player yet?

Why would you infer that I'm waisting my money? When the results have not been completely assured.

And it's not necessary to analyze the results, in my Dad's case. He really doesn't care about that.

He prefers Blu-ray because thats his personal interest. And you should respect that. The reason I assembled this thread was to see if anyone had either of the two. This thread wasn't made for you to disagree with my dad's personal preference. If you think what my dad's going to do is stupid than deal with it, he's made up his mind to purchase it within a week from now.

I didn't say it wans't going to happen, of course its going to happen. They're going to need more space one day, just like all of us. Computers and technology are always getting bigger and better. To be quite frank, it gets kinda old trying to have all the latest stuff, its imposible.

Re: Does anyone have Blu-ray disc player or HD-DVD player yet?

Without an HD-TV bluray is powerless to DVD and guess what: most people don't have HD-TVs and don't plan on getting them in the next 3 years because of the $1000 price for entry level and $3000 for 1080p capable sets (for bluray). I probably won't have an HD TV until I can get a 30" 720p set with built in speakers 16:9 LCD/CRT at less than $600 CAD which won't be for another couple of years and a lot of bargain hunting.

Re: Does anyone have Blu-ray disc player or HD-DVD player yet?

Some people have bought HD-TV's already, and they say they have wasted their money because there is hardly any HD service available. And hardly anyone i know have bought a HD-DVD player. I'm waiting untill the price drops down a bit until i get one and the sevice becomes cheaper and more available as well.

Off topic slightly. What HD service is available, which is from Sky, you have to pay £299 for a HD Sky box, then an extra £10 a month (half price atm) as well as the usual Sky subscription (up to £42, i think) for all customers, new and current. So really, people are expected to pay up to £53 a month for all the HD services and channels

Re: Does anyone have Blu-ray disc player or HD-DVD player yet?

From what I've heard, U.S and probably Canada as well, are switching to digital signals for all channels around 2010 or so. In this case, HD-TV is pretty much a standard equipment by that time. And for those that don't have HD-TV, a convertor box from digital to analogue would need to be purchased to watch the channels.

Until the actually players and disc are reasonable priced and the market has pretty much phased out CD/DVD's...yeah that is when I will get it.

Re: Does anyone have Blu-ray disc player or HD-DVD player yet?

I have one, well so far the movies look great. The audio is great, everything so far about I seem to like. What was really surprising, was that when my dad bought it they were 3 other people in line buying the exact same Blu-ray disc player as him strange at least for some people who believe Blu-ray disc player wouldn't be that popular until 5 years from now.

Too early to get one now, there isn't too much support and the products for it aren't as wide spread. The most recent DVD player I bought was one that handles DIVX. THAT is a sweet dvd player.
