Wireless Internet...using ADSL.
My question is do I need a special internet connection to use wi-fi or can straight up Broadband work, we are getting broadband soon and seeing as cords are going to be a big problem I have decided to use wireless, I know I will need a wireless router and a wireless pci card for my computer, and can you give me any other advice on wi-fi, and will the connection suffer if it is different, example- I use my 512kb router and I get 50kbs download speed, If I use 512kb wireless router will I still get 50kbs download speed or will it lag due to the flying bits of data getting tossed around...
thankyou.. |

Re: Wireless Internet...using ADSL.
That'll be all you need to set up wifi on your computer. Any broadband connection should do, my friend actually has his DS wifi working on dial-up, so any broadband connection should work. I'm not 100% sure about if your connection will suffer or not, I get same download speeds on this directly connected computer as compared to my laptop which is a good distance aways. So I'm thinking that your connection shouldn't be affected any at all. Hope that helps.

Re: Wireless Internet...using ADSL.
Yeah just a few things,
1. Are you on a network and other computers? Do you normally send big files over the network? Such as 1Gbs or more? if so Wireless is not for you. 2.If your just using Wireless for the internet, then you will be fine. And yes broadband works fine. This is just wireless network here... not wireless wireless network coming from a outside source. 3.There are currently 3 different versions of wireless, 802.11A, 802.11B and 802.11G. The one you want is 802.11G. So make sure the router you buy is Wireless 802.11G. Make sure the Wireless card is buy, is Wireless and 802.11G. 4.There is the downside to wireless, its slow for networking. 802.11G runs at 54Mbps. Which is about 5.4Mbs. But whats stupid is it really only runs half that. 22Mbps or 2.2Mbs. Which is REALLY slow for networking, but just fine for the internet. So what you want is 802.11G FTW, and make sure you secure your router and have SP2 on your XP computer. Or else setting up wireless is a huge pain in the arse. If you get stuck somewhere just Google it, google is your friend.

Re: Wireless Internet...using ADSL.
Inuyasha: A little off topic, but, I'm not sure if my friend is using an actual router for his DS wifi, or if he's using the USB WiFi connector, I'm fairly sure it's the latter of the two. Also, another friend tried the USB Dongle with dial-up, and it worked temporarily, but then it just stopped, not sure what happened, but he said he couldn't get it working again. There are also a few guides around to get NiWiFi Connection working on dial-up, you should be able to get it working with the USB connector.
