BluRay

Hey guys,

Today I was given a personall demo of the BluRay player on a Qualia 004 ($30,000) projector on a 100" screen. First I watched a DVD, and the image actually looked terrible. Grainy and blurry. At first, I thought nothing of it because that was what I was used to watching.

Then came BluRay

AMAZING! First, pictures of everyday objects and scenery in EXTREMLY high quality. I could not tell the difference between that image and REAL LIFE!!!

Then, a Spider Man 2 clip. INCREDIBLE!!! The detail in everything! EVERYTHING!!

Not only could you see each individual fiber in the costume, but each fiber reflected light perfectly, and each fibers light changed with every move. Facial expressions, bloodshot eye, effects not possibly noticed in standard imagry was crystal clear. You can actually see the details in the honeycomb like sewing of the costume .....

Now the negatives. First was that the effect is made for a 1080P TV, there are only a few TV's that display 1080P, most of witch the chassey can only accept 1080I, than upconverts. Second, the player at launch will cost a cool G-note !

The technology is amazing, and by the end of this year and into next year, we are sure to see a boom in production, creation, and sales of 1080P TV's!

I even got a BluRay hat!
SWEET!!!!

Re: BluRay

Sounds good, they go on sale at the end of next month, I am not sure about the differences between Blu-ray and Hd-d or something like that, and as seeing as those TVs are so expensive, maybe 2008 sounds like a good year for me to swich over.

Re: BluRay

BluRay has more movie company support. Larger storage. Faster right time. And will be avaliable in Single layer (25GB) Dual layer (50GB) Quad layer (100GB) and Oct layer (200GB). Dell, HP, Apple, and Vaio are all backing BluRay (roughly 75% of computers on the market).

HD-DVD will be backwords compatible on current DVD playing devices, BluRay must be played on BluRay specific players.

BluRay in the long run should provail as the primary HD disc format.

Re: BluRay

Hmm, I'm not sure about Bluray. I mean, I'm sure it's great technology and all, but I heard the visual difference between Bluray and HD-DVD is indiscernable. Then you've got the data storage space issue, which will be great for tech heads, but the average consumer probably won't care about it, unless Bluray specifically and agressively markets this and convinces people that it's a significant advantage.

Then there's the whole price issue and the backwards compatability issue. I don't personally have a large DVD collection, but I'd still rather have a player that can view them.

I think what it comes down to is:

HD-DVD: "Hey check us out! We're great now!"

BluRay: "No, check us out! We'll be better eventually!"

With no clear winner in sight I think I'll wait and see who turns out to be VHS and who turns out to be Beta :p

Re: BluRay

Well...1080p can create this sort of reaction. Too bad I'm not going to own anything above a 720p set in the next 20 years.

Re: BluRay

Wait until the price drops on all related technologies including HD-TV and Blu-Ray discs, then we can talk about what type of discs or HD-TV's we are going to buy. As of now, these highly-advanced technologies are insanely expensive.

As some people might say: "I don't have that kind of money to waste".

Most of these things are for novelties. I do not see the point in them, other than displaying amazing graphics, sounds and so on. The actual purpose of it is just for entertainment. In the end, does it impact your life in any way other than making you go: "Wow"?

Re: BluRay

Meh Bluray is obsolete to HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) Which is hoped to hold around 300GB If I'm correct.

Re: BluRay

Well that does sound great, but when am I going to watch anything on a $30.000,- screen??!!

And it seems that HD-DVD movies will price around $29,- Which should be cheaper than the Blu-Ray format.
Quote:
Warner indicated that high definition movies on HD DVD may be priced slightly lower than movies on the competing Blu-ray format.
And think about it if you do own a 42" lcd screen are you going to buy the cheaper one or the more expensive one? If you know that your screen is too 'small' to see any difference? Of course you are going to buy the cheaper format. It happened with VHS and it will happen again. Of course there is more support for Blu-Ray than there was for Betamax. But does the average consumer care? No they just buy the cheapest system especially when it becomes clear you can't really see the difference.

Another reason is that manufacturers have to completely change their manufacturing line.
Quote:
Blu-ray's rival, the HD DVD format, relies on a reasonably well understood process. HD DVDs are constructed very similarly to existing DVDs, and the basic discs can be made with relatively minor modifications to existing DVD manufacturing lines.

Blu-ray discs, on the other hand, require completely different equipment. Most of the major disc replicators--the companies that make DVDs and CDs--now have a test line or two up and running, but hard data on production costs remains scant.
And

Quote:
a manufacturing line for HD DVD discs produced nearly twice as many usable discs as a similar line pumping out the Blu-ray format, over the same period of time. That translates into higher costs for Blu-ray producers. Moreover, component costs for Blu-ray can be nearly double HD DVD costs, because elements are still hard to find, the executive said.
So far the better quality and more storage space comes at a very heavy price for both consumers and manufacturers.

Quote:
Analysts at Sanford Bernstein estimated that media companies could collectively lose as much as $16 billion over seven years if HD DVD and Blu-ray were launched without a clear favorite, because without a clear-cut winner, consumers would be leery of buying one or the other.
I expect all these things to get quite messy. If it does take a while for a clear winner to appear, lots of companies will lose a lot and might go bankrupt and even after that if there is a winner the companies that support the losing format are looking at a complete restructuring of both their manufacturing process for the second time in a short time. I would expect a lot of companies won't be able to afford such a change twice in a short period of time.

Re: BluRay

A BluRay Movie will cost on average $5 more than the standard DVD.

Those are insanely expensive and unrealistically difficult to manufacture. They aren't even beyond the hypothesizing stage with those in R&D. It's all "in theory" technology.

And it's been safe to buy a HDTV for years now. There's absolutely no reason not to buy one if you're interested.

I really don't care about what format wins. As long as I have my HD.
