Intel iMacs

Hi all. Last month, I went out and bought an Intel iMac for my birthday. Now, after over a month, I am still loving this computer. It is very fast, and even faster if you have a T1 connection (unlucky me, DSL). The built in iSight and built in Microphone allow video blogging and video recording all done on iMovie HD. iLife '06 is included too.

And amazingly, with the help of a program called "bootcamp", you can download and install Windows XP (legally) onto your hardrive. When starting up your computer, you can choose between Windows XP and Mac. The professional version, however, has not been released, so if you do download bootcamp, make sure to back up your files just incase you become apart of the 3% who got their arses an empty computer.

But, there are some things they could have added for a small fee, like a RAM upgrade for example. It only has 512mb of memory, but it is still very fast.

The specs are located here.

And here's an image of it for ya guys.

Does anyone else have one? If you don't, and are looking for a good multimedia computer, or just a grand mac, consider getting the Intel.

Happy Posting.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. They added functions to make your own Podcast, your own movie soundtrack, etc. I, personally, like Soundtrack Pro better.

Re: Intel iMacs

You are aware T1's are generally slower than the average home users DSL or cable modem?

T1 is 1.544MegaBit/s
DSL ranges from 512Kilobit/s to anywhere as high as 20MegaBit/s but normally 2-5MegaBit/s
Cable ranges from about the same.

Why in gods name would you want something slower?

I've got a mini thats non intel based and its not half bad. I would pickup a new one but I'd rather buy a wii and a ds this holiday season. I sure wouldn't mind an iMac or new mini.

Re: Intel iMacs

I work at Abt Electronics in Illinois, and we have an apple and sony store. I have worked in both of them, but currently sell sony (more money in TV's).

The new Apples are amazing, and great for a family desktop computer, or powerfull multimedia laptop (if you have the money).

To counter your argument about the ram upgrade, Apple website does offer it, and we offer a ram upgrade as well, free installation with purchase.

Put a full gig of ram in an intell imac, and you got a great family computer as well as the ability to switch to windows to handle those non-compatible issues.

Sweet.....

Re: Intel iMacs

I picked up an Intel iMac with my tax credit just recently myself. I have to agree that it's pretty slick. In my case I ended up getting one of the 20" models with an extra 512 MB of RAM, and 256 MB graphics card.

There's very little negative to be said. The only occasional downside is a lot of applications not being released as universal binaries yet. What's more, many of the Darwinports and Fink packages break, having not been updated to recognize the platform. So for those who're interested for the more *nix-like features OSX offers, it may be worth waiting a bit longer.

Seems everyone I know has switched over to Macs as of the Intel models. Three of my co-workers, for example, have switched from Windows machines to Macbook Pros for home use.

Re: Intel iMacs

I really hope you got the 3 year extended warranty/Protection plan. If it breaks, you get it fixed for free.

And if you didn't get it, well, just make sure you take extra care of it.

Oh believe me, macs crash AND die. Even more so than PC's. There is absolutely nothing worse than working on editing for a few hours, things freezing then disappearing with a note saying : " ------ has unexpectedly quit!" (i.e *gasp*! all your hard work has gone down the drain! Isn't that a shame?! )

Also, since I got my Imac last year, it has fully died twice. Death to the point of having to re-wipe the hard drive again. All of this humiliation while the aeging family pc continues plodding along peacefully ._.

This is the first time I hear of imac intels >__> *curses under her breath or not getting an intel mac while she was at it*

Certainly did - I get scads of business user discounts, including free extended AppleCare.

Regarding Macs and warranties in general, Anime_Queen's correct in that all machines are prone to failure. AppleCare's pretty good in that it covers pretty much any damage so long as it isn't completely boneheaded. Hard drives, RAM, and monitors all have a high enough rate of failure over a computer's lifetime that it's worth spending an extra hundred dollars getting them covered, and Apple doesn't give you the same runaround that you get with the likes of Dell. First-gen Apple products are just as prone to defects as other companies': For example, my girlfriend's older iMac's mother failed on her a few months after buying it. Turns out it was the result of a widespread known issue, and thankfully got fixed pretty quick. Previously she'd had an iBook screen fail on her after two years of owning it, and under AppleCare it was replaced for free with a much newer model screen.

Re: Intel iMacs

Alright, I guess you can help me then. Do I need to install AppleCare for the protection plan to work?

Re: Intel iMacs

No: Most of the time AppleCare is automatically associated with your machine's serial number. So unless you peel all the stickers off your machine and scrub every barcode, you shouldn't have any trouble. You don't even need proof or purchase or personal ID proving you're the one that bought it.

Thanks.

Re: Intel iMacs

But Wii - please remember to register it online!
I forgot for 12 months and 3 days to, and when I called up, they checked online to see if I have it registered .. and nearly refused to help me >__<
It doesn't happen automatically (associated with the machine's serial number? they're 2 seperate things. At least it was so in my case) so register it as soon as you can.

You could find a windows one with the same specifacations for a little over half the price, I'll bet. But there's one problem: Windows stinks.
So, either get a win. pc and download linux (I don't reccoment it unless you are prepared to have to learn a lot to make it really good)
or
Get a mac. (I also don't reccomend it, due to the proprietariness and the cost, but oh well, that's me )
