Moved to Technology. More of that type of question. FQS is more for site/forum issues.

Re: GIMP help...

Use the lasso tool and be very careful. With an image that low-resolution, you should be able to extract Link fairly easily. If you need to, blur the edges a bit afterwards just to clean it up.

Re: GIMP help...

Sorry but not at all. To make it easier though just do his chest and up, you won't be able to have that much anyway for a sig or avy. And yes, putting in some blur on the edges is your best choice, that or you could crop a general area you want, then zoom in a lot, and erase the edges pixel by pixel.

Re: GIMP help...

I don't use gimp but I'm assuming it has zoom.
You can zoom real close into it and you have a bigger picture to kinda work with, using this will provide a better cropped image.

>_> Scoria beat me to it within seconds

Re: GIMP help...

Um.... just regular blur. I forget what kinds of blur GIMP has... but just test each one out till you get nice results.

Re: GIMP help...

No this is in general, and I just realized never blur the edges makes it look crap.

For a good cropped image
Zoom in as to at least 3x or 5x the original image and start slecting it, it takes time and just be patient, by doing this it gives you less chance to error and the end result makes it look better.

Re: GIMP help...

It only looks bad if you do it way to much. I find doing blur only a bit gets the job done.

Re: GIMP help...

Well, in PS, I use the magic wand tool yes. Weird. I nevenr get the lasso tool werking right... Anyways, I usually use the MW tool, and adjust the Tolerance level a bit. After that, I get my trusty eraser tool and set it's tolerance level to 100% and WALAH! erase the selected area!

Re: GIMP help...

A) You have to buy it for a lot of money(PS)
B) It's easier than GIMP, IMO.

The gimp has a magic wand, it looks like a stick with a little thing on the end, I think. Like a wand. I could never get the magic wand in the gimp, it just didn't work. I'm happy with PS.

Re: GIMP help...

Use the pen tool. People have done very great renders in GIMP with it.

There is no pen tool, an alternate to the lasso is a quickmask:

It does use the lasso but it's just a rough selection
