What should I upgrade next?

I was wondering what do you think I should upgrade next on my computer. I'll tell you the specs.

CPU: Intel Pentium III Processor 664 MHz.

RAM: PC 100, 512 MB (2 slots).

Hard Drive: 7200RMP, 80GB, Maxtor.

Video Card: Intel(R) 82810E, On-board video, 32MB.

Moniter: No idea. Some cheap brand CTX CRT moniter I bought for $10-15.

Motherboard: (I'm not sure what type it is, the computer was given to me) P2, P3 compatible, 5 PCI slots, no AGP. And it's only PC 100 compatible with RAM.

I'm not sure what to upgrade. Although my computer is very old (and outdated) I can't afford a new computer right now. I want to upgrade, but for example if I get a new motherboard, I would have to get a new CPU as well, and vice-versa (same goes for RAM). I think I'm stuck of the decision of decided whether or not I need a new motherboard/CPU, or a new video card. The thing is though...The video card has to be PCI compatible, and not AGP (<PCI is so much slowed then AGP...<). I want to at least of the minimum specs of a computer of THIS CENTURY.

Although, if one of you can recommend me an affordable computer (which has the minimum technology of today), that would work too. Preferably a computer with an AMD CPU; that's not Semphron (Intel costs too much…).

Re: What should I upgrade next?

Like you said your computer is very old.
Not only is it old, its crap too.

You would have to give us an idea on how much your willing to spent.
The only thing your going to be able to save from that pile of junk is your HDD and whatever opitcal drives you have =P

So your looking at

New Mobo
New CPU
New RAM
New Video Card
New Case

Which I can tell you now, Is going to be over $500.
Whatever you do, don't upgrade anything in your current computer.
Save what you can for that new computer.

Save and wait for a new computer. Your machine sounds like the kind I either gut or perform horrible experiments on.

Re: What should I upgrade next?

Lol I know...My computer is junk. I suppose your right V99, I should wait till I have enough money (I can't possibly upgrade anything without basically getting a new computer XD). So what "affordable" computer do you recommend?

Re: What should I upgrade next?

I would wait until July when Windows Vista comes out, then by a bottom-of-the-line Dell computer. It's not too much (probably under $600 - $400 if you're lucky and get a good deal) and they do offer some of what you want.

You already have better parts than what that computer might come with, but you can always plug in the extra ram and hard drive. Replace anything you want to, and sell the rest.

Re: What should I upgrade next?

I have been working with upgrading old computers lately, which is a pain cuase nothing is ****** compatible with old stuff. I would go for the processor, though. Go on Ebay and you can find some P3s with more MHzs, but that's about it.

Ewww Dell is gross!

If you can, build your own.
If you have a computer store near you (that has prices similar to internet prices) that will build your computer for you, even better!
There is a store near me (45 minute drive) that has excellent prices and will build a comp for a customer and give a 3% discount on each part.
Prices start at $279 (CAD) for preconfigured computers

If you can find something similar in your area it would be best

Thats such a waste of time, its just not worth it.
like I said before save, And what computer to buy?
Well most of the time, the cheapest option is to build one yourself.

1.Its fun
2.You get what you want
3.Most of the time is cheaper

I have to disagree. I was looking at a motherboard/CPU combo at Fry's electronics. It was an Intel Pentium D processor, 223k L2 Cache...which is horrible. But the speed of the CPU was "ok"..2.53MHz and a 533MHz FSB. It was $70. And then the cheapest (minimum) case was about $30. Then the RAM it supported was 5300. And Fry's was having a sale on a 512 MB ram chip for $70. Plus I would need a video card (minimum $40). Which comes to a total of $210. They sold a whole computer which was a lot better, for about $50 dollars more.

I suppose I just have to find the right deals, at the right date.

Re: What should I upgrade next?

lol dude, don't buy from n00bie stores that are out there to rip you off.

http://www.newegg.com/

Not to mention, AMD are the way to go =)
I just did a very quick look on NewEgg for you.

Mobo: ASUS A8N5X ATX AMD - $78.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131569

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - $130.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103537

RAM: CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB - $33.25
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145026

Video Card: XFX Geforce 6600GT - $119.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150098

Cheap Case: ASPIRE X-Dreamer - $49.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144001

Total Price: $411
Thats a pretty good price if you ask me. Heck you could get another 512mb RAM and maybe a 3200+ AMD CPU and you'll have a nice little gaming machine.
Even the 512mb and 3000+ would handle most games.
