File Sharing

My dad and I have tried for hours to transfer files from one computer to another through workgroups. My dad saids we need a CD to use workgroups. I said that we may have to disable the firewall to use the internet gateway. I'm starting to think that a direct LAN connection with his computer would do the trick. Is that a good idea?

Re: File Sharing

Now I don't think you need a overcross cable (Unless you just have two computers and its gonna stay that way). If you have a Network hub and both computers have network cards installed and working and the two network cards are plugged into the network hub.

Then it should work, The computers just need some tweaking. Such as having file sharing enabled and everything setup for a network such as the right workgroup etc...And both computers have there firewalls set to off just to see if it works. Once you can get it to work Im sure you can tweak your firewall to let in certain IPs.

Just check Google on how to get the whole network process to work. Its easy once you know...

Re: File Sharing

I had trouble with mine, but I eventually got them to work, mine both connect at a router, so it made it easy. What you do is configure it on one coputer and at the end say that you don't need to make a disk, or any of that stuff. Do the same on the other. Now, here's the trick that microsoft doens't tell you. on your comptuer, go to start, connect to..., and show all network connections. Click status, or something simialer, than click support and take down your ip address. Do the same on the opther comptuer. Go to your firewall (I use zonealarm), and under something like zones, or firewall, allow those IP adresses.

Now go to my network places and you should be done, if not, than in my network places, click "veiw workgrouped computers" and see if the other one whos up. If it does, click on it and it should conifgure everyhting!

Any questions ask/PM me, or call 1800-MICROSOFT.
