I need help with gimp

I just downloaded a program called gimp. It's kin of like photoshop, but I don't know how to copy and paste pictures into the program. Can anyone help?

To get pics in to work on go to file, down to open and find the pic you want. Click on it the click open at the bottom of the window. And if you want a pic on top of that (as a new layer) go to file and down to open as layer.... I'm not that good at explaining things but I hope that helps.
