I want a laptop that can play games...

with a lot of memory, with a good graphics card, at a low price. Also, this laptop will be used for school stuff, too, so I'll need space for that. My price range is 400-700 dollars.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

---------- Post added at 03:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:08 PM ----------

I've been looking at this one:

HP - Factory-Refurbished Pavilion Laptop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory - Argento

Would it be good?

I won't go for HP, as it can have hardware problems very quickly.

What type of games do you plan to run? Steam games? Emulators?

Re: I want a laptop that can play games...

I would never reccomend an HP ever ever ever ever EVER

The Sony one there looks pretty good, but maybe not for gaming.

If you'll be using a laptop for gaming, you will NOT find one for $400-about $600

Dell laptops are usually the way to go if you're looking for value for price.

I would definetley recommend the XPS lineup of laptops, as even the 15" model at the base price of $799 is a stunningly powerful laptop featuring the second generation of the intel core i5 processor and a decent graphics, but I do notice it's about $100 out of your price range.
XPS 15 - Intel Core i7 Laptop for High-Octane Entertainment | Dell

otherwise, the inspiron range of laptops are very nice for the price.
But if you really want something engineered for gaming, save up more money ($1000 got my family a laptop that can handle quite a bit on the gaming end) and go farther, otherwise you'll find yourself in this same position in a year or two.

Re: I want a laptop that can play games...

You could get a MacBook Pro, and install Windows 7 in Bootcamp.
Dell laptops are generally good, and they own their own gaming series laptops: Alienware.
There used to be XXODD, but it doesn't exist anymore.
Asus is pretty good too, but it most likely doesn't let you install any other OS on it.

These laptops are laptops that you have to stay away from:
HP, Toshiba, Acer, Packard Bell (= Acer), Medion (Aldi laptops), and MSI (never worked with that one).

Re: I want a laptop that can play games...

I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC, which runs most Steam games fine (Half-life 2 series and Portal 1), but utterly fails at running Portal 2. I had to put everything on minimal video settings and it still had a crappy frame rate. The next day, I tried to load it again (still on same settings), and the computer overheated and crashed. :/

Whoa, if you want to run GCN, Wii or even N64 roms, something within 400-700 dollars ain't your thing. Might want to go to 800 for that.

My 600 dollar laptop running an intel celeron @ 1.3 GhZ that lags on minecraft can handle N64 style roms just fine.

GCN or Wii Roms would require something better.

Re: I want a laptop that can play games...

You need a fairly recent card to really do Wii and GameCube games, my p4 with Intel integrate graphics can do n64 games easily.

M11x from alienware is a good choice. really only thing worth it from them.

Get a Thinkpad. Do not get HP, Dell, Acer, Sony, or any other companies that have been mentioned in this thread.

Seriously, don't do it. If you want to game, be prepared to spend a hefty price tag. I went with a cheaper brand when I got my laptop and I am regretting it now.

Also, you're not going to find a decent, long lasting gaming laptop for under a thousand dollars. I understand your budget, but you're much better off waiting until you have over a grand saved. If you settle for a sub-par laptop it's a wasted $700 in my honest opinion.

I agree with almost everything in this post.

Dell and Sony make very good computers, and I've never had a complaint about them to this day, with the exception of bloatware, but Dell isn't too bad with that (mainly just the Dell Dock *puke*)

I'm making this post on a Dell Inspiron 11z and honestly, It's a basic laptop. It costed about 700 dollars and it's absolute ♡♡♡♡ for gaming, I don't regret getting it, but at times I wish I had a better one. I'm going to buy a 3000 dollar MacBookPro when I finish military training for all uses, but I digress.

My family, however, has a Dell studio 15 from 2009/2010. The thing is AMAZING for almost every purpose. It can handle most modern games at maximum graphics at HD resolutions. I played Mass Effect 2 @ 1920x1080p and it stuck in the 30-45 fps range at high performance, occasionally dipping to 25 in high intensity scenes. at 1280x720p it runs 45-60fps steady, regardless of what's happening on screen.

I've never owned a thinkpad, so I won't speak against or for it. I give my fullest reccomendation to Dell or Sony.

Re: I want a laptop that can play games...

If you really want to play PC games at all you probably should be investing in a desktop, as they're far more customizable and versatile overall (not to mention cheaper).

I would just get a cheap netbook/basic laptop for school stuff and save up for a desktop.

If you really wanna go this route though, stay away from Alienware ( it's overpriced crap), HP, and Dell. Go Toshiba, Asus, or Sony. I'm using an Asus myself right now and it's pretty baller.

Sony is over priced crap. Alienware has built a nice little package with their m11x. Everything else is overpriced crap. Asus is generally pretty good, though I recommended looking at their entertainment series laptops, not their Republic of Gamer laptops, as they are generally way over priced, and the high end entertainment series ones are generally decent for gaming. (Check the graphics card.) I'm on an Asus right now, however, If I was going to buy a laptop today, I'd get the high end m11x. ($1000)

If you're talking about desktops, just build your own.

Re: I want a laptop that can play games...

Your OP is far too vague. What games? Are you talking Crysis, Portal 2, Metro 2033, Company of Heroes, Battlefield 2, Starcraft 2, Plant vs. Zombies? Are you looking for something that can run them on high settings or just run them? What FPS is acceptable?

At the very least please give some specific examples of games you want to be playing on it. If you want to be able to play games "school stuff" isn't really going to be a problem unless you're learning to be an engineer or something so that's pretty much irrelevant. Needing space for it, well I have no idea how much space you plan on using to install those unmentioned games. You didn't say that either.

Also, keep in mind how much whatever you're buying weighs. There is a HUGE difference between a 3kg laptop and a 2kg laptop and if you're hauling around a supercomputer all day your back with not thank you. I'm speaking from experience. I've had a 3kg laptop for three years. If I was just walking in and out to college it was fine, but if I had to have it with me all day I was sorry by the time I got home.

That's why I'm getting this. It's 1.5 kg and 12.1". It's not at all top of the line (1.8Gz dual core, 2GB RAM) but it has a graphics card and a graphics chip and it swaps between them when needed to save power. It won't do Metro 2033 on high but it'll run BF2 just fine. Probably not what you're looking for though.

But most of all. If you want to play games make sure to get a PC with a graphics card, not just a chipset.

Re: I want a laptop that can play games...

You can get refurb thinkpads for less than a thousand, but new hardware will not be less than a grand if it's any good. And even then, spending more than a grand does not necessarily mean you will automatically have a good one.

Anyone I ever know who has had an alienware laptop had it fail and die violently within the first 3 years of use. Alienware is for scrubs.

It was true a year ago because of the price, not because of the quality. An Alienware laptop is a Dell laptop with a different logo, so build quality can be expected to be mid-range, along the lines of Apple in quality, minus the recent heat issues in newer macbooks.
