Windows 7 launch thread

I figured I'd might as well make this thing for discussion of the just-released Windows 7. If anyone wants to share their thoughts on the operating system, feel free to do it here. I'm currently waiting on my pre-order to arrive, which at first I thought had been vanished away by Amazonian demons, but is in fact en route according to an e-mail I just received. Any fresh tweaks, configuration options, tips for installing, etc. belong here as well.

To be honest, I have no idea if ZU's community for technology-type stuff is big enough to warrant a thread of this nature, but I guess we'll find out.

Re: Windows 7 launch thread

Believe or not, but I've had Windows 7 since late September. My dad was able to acquire a real (not the beta) copy from a Microsoft seminar he attended.

And it is truly impressive. It is considerably faster than Vista.

I thought it was going to be released tomorrow. And I'm pretty sure it was.

This—it explains it all. I've been using the real copy since September, too. I am very happy I switched from Vista to 7. My brother loves it, since it makes Sims 3 faster.

I have the beta installed on my laptop; I'll probably upgrade if I can get my hands on the real copy.

Re: Windows 7 launch thread

I'm upgrading tomorrow. Microsoft is offering a huge student discount to anyone with a valid college email address, so I'd figure I could spare $30 to finally be rid of vista.

I haven't liked any Windows OS since '98 and XP (and I prefer '98)...

Re: Windows 7 launch thread

Amazon said it wouldn't get to my house till next monday but I don't know but it might get here earlier. I like the RC version it worked ok on my Acer Aspire one AOA 150 which isn't that powerful. Yeah i hate vista so much every night I download podcasts and listen to them before i go to bed, and when i have my mp3 player plugged in it won't let me open the device software the process is there but nothing else. I hope windows 7 doesnt have that problem.

Believe it or not, I've had it on disk legally for almost a year. It's been a beta which people can use for a while now.

Re: Windows 7 launch thread

The upgrade finished a couple of hours ago. so far I like what I'm seeing. I've even developed an H.R. Giger themed slide show for my desk top! I definitely like this more than vista.

Started dicking around with 7 since build 7000. Have been somewhat impressed with it, it has its problems, but what OS doesn't?

Re: Windows 7 launch thread

Has anyone else had any issues playing DVDs through the version ofWMP that came with windows 7? For some reason, whenever I try to play one it will run for a few seconds then a message will show up telling me that the disks copy protection won't allow the movie to be played. I never had this problem before with vista, so I'm fairly certain it has to do with something in Windows 7

You need a decoder.

Re: Windows 7 launch thread

I've had the final version of Windows 7 for several weeks through the computer science department here at school. It is fantastic. It is everything that Windows Vista should have been.

Re: Windows 7 launch thread

I've had the RC for a while now, and put vista back on a while back (I couldn't let the RC run out on me when I had loads of coursework on my computer). It was really good. It was vista, but... good.

Still, it costs too much for me to upgrade right now. It's £115 for the full edition. No price for the upgrade on amazon.

Still, I don't want them to charge too much for it. Windows 7 is really just Vista with all the screws tightened up and a new coat of paint. If apple can launch the upgrade for Snow Leopard for £25, I expect Microsoft to at least manage £75 for a vista upgrade.

Re: Windows 7 launch thread

I got my copy on the release date - Amazon shipped to me the day before, so that was quite quick. I had some installation issues, namely, that it didn't like my DVD drive from 2001 (told me it was missing drivers etc.). After four hours of messing around with things, I just hooked up another DVD drive and it worked fine. I love how smooth and easy to use the interface is, and Windows 7 does seem faster than Windows XP in some situations. My programs have been mostly compatible, but I have some issues with a couple of games, and Creative's ALchemy for EAX stuff is a bit of a pain to use. There's definitely a learning curve for me, as a more advanced user. I can't say I'd recommend it to anyone at this point, however. Windows XP does everything 90% of users need, and unless you're heavily into gaming or have to have the newest programs for everything, I don't think it's a must-buy.
