They're cheaper for a reason - no hyper threading. That really is a deal breaker. Nothing is more awesome that seeing 8 different CPU monitors in your task manager. It effectively doubles your cores making 4 cores into 8, at least from Windows point of view.

My PC is really starting to show it's age, mainly because it was originally built at the start of 2007 - a long time ago.

-AMD Athlon 5600+ X2 @ 2.9Ghz

-G.Skill 4Gb of DDRII 800 PC2-6400
-ASUS Geforce 9600GT SLI - Now just one XFX Radeon 4870

Yeah, it definitely makes it twice as effective, because if you split a car in two it will run twice as fast.

I would recommend giving a SSD a try,

Not bought any new parts in ages myself, still running a 8400 at 3.4 and a 2900

Re: computer specs

I have a laptop that has about 60% the processing power of my DS classic. It also has a 4GB hard drive. And my desktop isn't all that much better. I won't bother to post specs, since it's all pretty bad. But hey, it does what I need it to do (all be it slowly) and I haven't YET thrown my desktop out the window. I say that's an accomplishment.

problem is, my video card is integrated so I can't easily change it, if at all. the game's performance went up considerably when I added more RAM, but I still get lag in combat and around lots of light sources. I suppose these aren't things to get really worked up over, but it would be nice if everything ran smoothly all the time.

To replace an integrated video card, you just plug in a new video card and hook up your stuff to that. Your computer will notice it has a proper card and switch off the onboard one.

Anyway. My own stats... I've got two computers, both of which are capable of running most games these days, but I'll give you the stats of the one I most often do stuff on.

I built it.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 (dual core), 3gHz
RAM: 2GB
HDD: 250gb & 80gb, both SATA
GPU: GeForce 9800 GT, 1gb VRAM
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2

I recently had to get a new GPU, and I (being cheap) went with something that seemed passable and didn't suck. It's worked fine so far.

(I had to get a new GPU because half the capacitors exploded on my old one for some reason.)

Re: computer specs

Manufacturer: Myself? XD
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit (upgrading to ultimate or home premium soon)
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+ 3.20 GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT 1GB
HDD: 466GB 7200+ RPM (I don't remember the model name and my computer encrypts it ;_; )
RAM: 2.00 GB (upgrading to 4GB soon)

Things to update:
RAM, Video Card, Operating System

I had to get the video card replaced, and the people at the shop put the WRONG video card in. I used to have 8800 GT and now I have 9500 which doesn't function as good. Even worse is I had to pay for a downgrade. D: I will be fixing this as soon as I get the money to.

You just put in a graphics card there and it will work (assuming it isn't a laptop). You don't take out the integrated card.

Was quite good at 1024x768 all medium/high on a X850XT. Well, sure it lagged with lots of lightning in fights, but...

Re: computer specs

My new baby:

Intel Core i7-920 (D0 stepping), overclocked to 4.00 GHz (hyper threading disabled)
Scythe MUGEN-2 heatsink
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R
3x2 GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600, 8-8-8-21, 2T command rate

I had some issues getting it started up at first. The system crashed a few times and I had to play around quite a bit with the BIOS to get it stable and have it detect my IDE disc drives properly. Once it was up in running and I got the drivers installed, however, it was smooth sailing. Using some information I found online, I got a solid, stable, and fast overclock in all of 5 minutes of tweaking, and temperatures have been very solid. The performance difference is enormous, and makes my system a joy to use. I didn't see increases in some places that I expected to, but I also saw major improvements in areas I total didn't expect as well. The large memory pool makes multi-tasking awesome again, and I can Alt+Tab between even the most demanding programs I have without any sort of delay. Load times and stutters are virtually nonexistent. Now all I need is a new video card...
