Photography Hosting Domains

Hopefully someone will reply to this. :3

I had a photography domain, FO FREE. Dotphoto, if any of you have heard of it.
Well recently they got sold to Amazon, and want me to pay $20 a month. I let them shut down my account at the end of September.

I know quite a few of you do the whole photography thing, and I was wondering if you knew any good domains out there to host with? I prefer free obviously, but if they're that awesome I'll deal with fees.

Re: Photography Hosting Domains

I wouldn't recommend facebook due to they heavily jpg compressing your photos

Re: Photography Hosting Domains

I was going to say Photobucket works well, but unless you pay, they downsize your images, and I imagine that won't do for photographers.

Flickr seems like it'd work well for you.
EDIT: Although Flickr has some space and number limitations for free users.
So in that case, maybe try Picasa.

Re: Photography Hosting Domains

I use Picasa for editing and retouching ocassionally. FB is a piece of crap server to load ANYTHING on to.
Photobucket I use for sourcing images, mostly, not to host them in a nice fashion.
I don't mind having my images downsized a little, as long as it shows them off nicely.

What's the limit for Flickr?
And, are there any limitations with Picasa (online hosting)?

Re: Photography Hosting Domains

http://www.flickr.com/help/limits/
Flickr lets you upload 100mb of photos a month, but you don't hit an overall ceiling on account storage. Also, without a pro account you can't view the original image (though it is still there if you ever sign up for an account).

I believe that Picasa has a limit of 1 Gigabyte overall, with more space costing money for the space. The advantage of Picasa is that the features aren't crippled if you don't pay like Flickr.

I'd still recommended Flickr, and if you want to let people download originals or upload more than 100mb a month, just get the pro account. It's only $25 a year.

Re: Photography Hosting Domains

My pictures are rather large, looking at the size limitations you've posted.

And experience with Picasa Pro (or whatever they've named it)?

Flickr pro looks quite appealing, but just to compare the two.

Re: Photography Hosting Domains

From what I understand you get all of the features of Picasa for free, and all you get when you pay for it is more space. So there really isn't a "pro" version of Picasa, just the ability to add more images (so what you see is what you get, feature wise). If you have a google account, you can check the rates of additional storage here.

All things considered, I believe that Flickr is a better choice. Beyond the written features, there's also a thriving community of members behind Flickr that you won't find with Picasa.

Re: Photography Hosting Domains

It's fairly self-explanatory. Try out the tour there: http://pa.photoshelter.com/tour

I'm not a big user myself. I just know it is a semi-popular choice amongst photographers. Seeing as I am not a photographer, I cannot make any amazing recommendations.
