Ethernet over power

Hi, I'm getting a new desktop computer made. The main problem is that it will be several walls away from the router. I've been using wireless but it doesn't do too well in some games and it seems to disconnect a bit when I'm doing alot at once.

I asked at the store and they recommended ethernet over power, which is where you have a plug leading from the modem to a wall socket, then in another room another cable leading from another wall socket into your computer, using the house's existing wires to transmit data.

Basically I was wondering if anyone has any comments on it- if you use it, what you've heard about it, recommendations and such. Thanks.

Re: Ethernet over power

The best method for games is to be directly connected to modem/router. I have a 45ft Ethernet cable running to my room from the modem straight to my desktop (of course, it's against the wall and everything).

Re: Ethernet over power

I know, but failing direct connection, with a choice between EoP and Wireless, which would be better?

Re: Ethernet over power

I would recommend 802.11n if it's only a couple rooms away. Ethernet over Power is sketchy at best, especially if you don't know the wiring in your house. If it goes through a breaker or similar, the connection can easily get broken. If you have a decent, powerful router, you should get a fine connection with wifi.

Re: Ethernet over power

Well, in my experience playing WoW, I would disconnect every time I got in certain fights that require alot of AoE, sometimes where no AoE is required. On some boss pulls I'd just stock up lag then disconnect five times before I could log back on; that was connected wirelessly through my laptop.

After my laptop fried I had a raid on the desktop computer connected directly to the router, and I didn't even get lag on the fights I usually disconnected on.

The wireless access point is pretty cheap, we are getting a free on as part of our Internet plan in the summer, but I'm not quite sure what the problem is. This problem is a bit more immediate as I'll be getting a new computer within a week and I need to decide between having a wireless card installed or just using EoP.

Re: Ethernet over power

Even 802.11g is no problem as long as you disable Wireless Zero Configuration. It causes disconnects and spikes about every minute.

Re: Ethernet over power

Would that compromise security, and if not, how would you go about doing that?

Thanks for the replies thus far, also, appreciate it.

Re: Ethernet over power

Wireless Zero Configuration = Windows configuring your wireless connection. Make sure you use the software provided to you by the company you got the card from to configure the wireless connection.

Turn it off by going to Start -> Run -> type services.msc -> OK -> Scroll to Wireless Zero Configuration -> Right Click -> Properties -> Startup Type: Manual -> Click Stop -> Click OK.
