Graphics/Webdesign/Etc. Pet Peeves

I just wanted to see;

For all those designers, graphic artists, etcetera, what are your pet peeves when it comes to graphics?

Do you hate a certain thing that people do in their graphics? Do you hate the way something looks sometimes?

For me, it'd probably be using those damn cartoon fonts that newbies use, and...oh, yeah. When people complain about their program. Be happy that you have a program.

yes, complaints about the program. i have to turn back my clock two years to even use mine, but i never complained.....

i think it has to be repetition that irritates me the most. Seeing the same damn sigs over and over, FROM THE SAME PERSON. even if theyre really nice. it gets real boring.

Also when i, and others, seem to go backwards and start making sigs with old techniques they grew out of already. im guilty of it, though i try not to be.

Things that annoy me most? Well, generally the people who don't take critism, yet still post and never ever listen. Also ones that repeat, and complaints about programs. Sure, putting "Don't be too hard, I'm using Paint" might be a good idea, but going on and on can get fairly annoying.

Actual things within the graphics that annoy me? Random pixels, repetition, random picture overlayed onto a background, font placed in random places... things that are saved wrong... and that list is mostly endless.

I have a few pet peeves. The top-and-bottom only borders, bad text, obvious filter rush (kekeke), everything in the center of the image - and more than anything else - lack of customization. Anyone can throw a C4D and render onto a blank canvas, smudge it, and call it a l33t grafix - but it takes a real digital artist to make something spectacular without the aid of those things.

Also, something that tends to really bother me, are the people requesting the graphics. I can't tell you how many clients I have that will be detailing me about the interface for their web site/software and will request something that is just completely off the wall..."Uh, I want a platypus, in a hat, yeah. At the top. With a flashing tail, and a green and purple gradient background".

No matter how many times I tell them "That won't look good!", they don't listen to me.

When people who suck/are just starting out use poor-quality pictures of lightning on an already bad sig. *shudders*

i hate big sigs that don't have borders. and fonts that are just thrown in, like random large white fonts.

edit: And people who THINK they're good.

If any of this manages to offend you, I would recommend re-evaluating where you are with graphic design.
  • Sig makers.
    • Most of you are terrible and could not design outside of this tiny canvas
    • Too much reliance on "renders," not an ounce of reliance on originality
    • Calling images "renders" when they were not rendered in three dimensions by a computer
    • Cookie-cutter tutorials that don't teach you anything about design except which combinations of keys and clicks to make to get a very specific result
    • Heavy reliance on filters
    • Way too much bloom
    • Usually have no idea what histogram "clipping" means
    • Terrible, terrible text
    • Lack of basics: Rule of thirds, color usage, visual flow
    • No sense of visual theme or cohesion whatsoever
    • Guys, alpha-transparent 24-bit PNGs are an accessibility nightmare, not a status symbol. We all have that option in "Save for Web" too, we're just wise enough to pass on it.
  • Sig makers turned web designers
    • No idea what markup is or what makes it semantic
    • I can just make one huge render based collage, slice and export it and that will work fine, right?
    • Way too much bloom, somebody should file for an injunction to have your Gaussian Blur filters removed
    • Still no sense of visual theme, cohesion or flow whatsoever

The thing I hate most about sig making is when somebody looks at a sig and simply says things like "this is terrible" and "that looks icky" without giving tips on improvement. I get that a lot and it simply annoys the hell out of me. How are people supposed to improve when they don't get their well-deserved constructive criticism? :glare

Quoted for truth, and for all future computer graphic design majors, I want to add that if these describe or apply to you in any way, you are in for a very rude awakening once you get into college.

It bugs me when I make a sig for someone, put a lot of time and effort in it, and they never use it. Yeah, it might suck, but some of them are actually really good. This usually applies more to smashboards people than ZU. A lot don't really use their sigs.

98% of sig makers on ZU. Also, truth.

I also hate cinematic boarders. They look f***ing ridiculous. Use a 1 px. black boarder, it looks a lot better. Oh and another thing (directed mainly to Darkshadowlink9), quit calling your signatures tags. They're not something you spraypaint on a building, but based on how poorly manufactured they look I guess the label fits. The buzzwords of these amateur "graphic artists" will always kill me to no end, seeing how pretentious they are with their latest "abstract" signature, sorry I meant tag.

People who whine about the efforts of signature makers like they are professionals talking to amateurs when in reality they are also just other people on the internet with a paint program.

People who do not involve themselves in the Graphics School Section, which is a pillar of ZU itself and must be strengthened by the support of the community in order to reach the full potential available.

People who point out, delete, or otherwise inconvenience any mention of a shameless plug to a wonderful but neglected section of the boards. Really, you're just seeing things. Don't be such a conspiracy theorist about it.

Reality check: any program that you draw, edit, and manipulate pictures in is a graphic art program. Yes, Photoshop is that. Plus, many of these amateur graphic artists have a huge ego problem and obviously haven't even taken any art class whatsoever. That's really the main complaint from F3.

And Jewish Donut: some may have an ego problem yes, but me, i just like making sigs and graphics. i learnt all my Photoshop skills (if they are that) doing it, and i intend to continue and thus improve my skills. I dont claim to be an artist.

And no, i never took an art class (not a proper one anyway) but that doesnt rule me out of making graphics and posting them on a forum. If i were to stop id never learn anything as i dont intend on taking an art class.

I taught myself how to use photoshop and make sigs. Then I started looking at tutorials, and trying to match styles with people here on ZU and Smashboards. Thats how I got better.

It's funny how posts with nothing but a rightful and objective statement get deleted and marked as "spam" and "flaming"... The fact that the staff still keeps Stony around here these days is really a proof of their incompetence. I mean it's more than obvious that Stony is the reason and topic of endless flame wars and arguments. And I doubt such a situation sprawled itself. I don't see why anyone would want a troublemaker like her (Not causing trouble, rather being the cause with her immaturity and whatnot) still around. If removing a member like that would benefit the community (And I don't see how it wouldn't, if anyone does, please do elaborate) why is the staff still keeping her around violently attacking anyone who says anything against her?

It's sad really. I believe that a lot of the people who know ZU will agree that Stony is probably the worst thing ever happened to it (Next to Gerudo perhaps). So, dear Staff, please explain to me why do you let such an immature little troublemaker still run around free trying to make her look "Alright" while everyone who says anything against her gets warned, gets an infraction and his posts get deleted. Thanks in advance.

Also, I'm pretty sure this post gets deleted and I will probably get an infraction again for this, so whoever sees this post and notices it's gone soon after, know and see for yourself how the mods can be gigantic fagots and losers.
