Big Stuff.

Hello. In case you haven't already noticed, my name is Sailboat. My buddy Kouten and I are making a webcomic. Since we didn't feel like buying a host site, we're hosting it here. This isn't a sprite comic, so avoid typing the "u guyz diddnt use sprites" post. This is simply a webcomic drawn sometimes by us and sometimes by paint. Anyways, here we go:

1. Hanging out.

Writer: Kouten. Artist: Kouten. Tools: Photoshop.

2. Bored

Writer: Kouten. Artist: Kouten. Tools: Photoshop.

3. What you don't know

Writer: Sailboat. Artist: Sailboat. Tools: Real men tools. Pencil and paper, betch.

4. Axe Murderer Jim

Writer: Kouten. Artist: Sailboat. Tools: Normal stuff.

That's all for now. We'll update when we feel like it. I'm going on vacation soon, so don't cry if I don't post in the next 2 weeks.

This thread is for us to post our comics and you to comment on them. Don't post your own. Your comics aren't Big Stuff. Ours are. Any non-Big Stuff comics posted here are spam. Thank you.

Spam is against the rules.

After reading those, I'm glad. u guyz diddnt use sprites, and I wish you had. They could be funny if you didn't draw them and put them together with some coherent idea. I will now proceed to rip my eyes out and throw them to safety. *squinch*

Re: Big Stuff.

I liked the last two the best.

I've never really appreciated the sort of...well, it's kind of hard to describe, but the type of random humor you appeal to in the first two comics. I see it in other webcomics across the internet, and I 'spose it really doesn't appeal to me.

Fun fact: Sailboat actually once had a sprite comic on ZU. :3

Hangin Out-Had potential, but wasn't executed very well. Could be a lot better
Bored-Hard to figure out what happened, but once I did, it wasn;t funny
What You Don't Know-Meh...
Axe Murderer Jim-Childish, and just not funny

I do like the way you keep the drawings simplistic and sometimes downright bad. It gives off the sense that you're not trying hard, or even at all.

...That's what webcomics are supposed to be like. There's no story or structure. They're just whimsical, (usually) humorous comics that don't have to make sense, and that's what's fun about it.

Oh, please.

I don't even want to remember that .JPG'd chunk of fail.

You're an ass. Please try to use constructive criticism. You can ask for improvement WITHOUT being a total ass hole. Trust me, it can be done. Isn't there some rule about how to criticize without downright flaming here, anyways?

Re: Big Stuff.

@ GS - he said in the FIRST POST not to have any "no sprites" comments. It's helpful to read the whole post before commenting on it.

Anyway, about the comic - it's good. Like LB said, the art is very simplistic (he might've gone a bit overboard with the "bad" comment), which means that people focus on the humor more than "ooooooooooooooooo pretty". Much to my liking - if it's the style your comic is going to have, keep it going. That being said, the humor does need a little bit of work (I did like the last one, but the first three didn't really impress). Don't worry about it too much, though - the more you do this, the more your humor will improve. I don't think there's a single spriter out there who had a glorious and hilarious first comic. All of those things in mind, I hope you and your friend continue this!

Maybe you should read MY whole post before posting. Rurrr.

Although I agree with your opinions about the comic, and I think these would have been funnier if he put them all together in 1 sprite comic.

Thanks. We're adding more soon, ad this is basically just a trial.

Better comics come with more experience.

Well, I was contemplating that, but I'm not really big on consistency. As soon as I get something set, I think "Oh wait, this would have been cooler". With no set theme or structure, I can do whatever I want.

I could've sworn he said "constructive criticism" somewhere, Lurrrre!... not "please bash my comic like it was a baby seal".

Also, GS, I guess I missed the joke - it certainly didn't seem like you were joking in the slightest with your post.

Re: Big Stuff.

The last one wasn't funny...It just wasn't

Mainly because I knew that was going to happen from the 2nd panel, so the 4th panel wasn't really necessary. But overall, they are alright.

Even though you didn't want the comment about you not using sprites, I believe it is needed. This is a place for sprite comics, I think normal comics should go in the artwork forum; the shantytown isn't very strict though, so ehh.

Yeah, I was expecting that. The thing is, this is basically a trial run, so we want as much feedback as we can get. Also, I sent a message to Mr. Fish beforehand asking where to post this. He said...

Quote:
I think the line is close enough though that you could put it in whichever section you wanted without a moderator caring to move it.
So, I think this is the right place to put it. The art section is kinda egotistical, and everyone there just waits for people to give feedback rather than actually going out and giving it themselves so I think this is a more appropriate place for what we're trying to do.

Ten points if you can make out what game the orange guy's playing.

EDIT:

My last comic before my vaycay. It's not rally even a comic, more like a picture. I made it a really long time ago, too. I just felt like posting this as a show of the raw power of "Bigmen" (what I call the people I draw). Anyways, here it is. Comic eight.

8: Masterpiece.

Art and story: Sailboat.

I tried to make it so everyone dies, except for one person. Find that person, and you win.

Re: Big Stuff.

Wow, after reading your post, then rereading mine, I see I was assish. But, it was still *somewhat* constructive. It's really the humor that needs work. I have no doubt that this would make ten and eleven year olds smile or chuckle, but I'm sure these are not the people you're trying to appeal to. You have some good ideas here, but you've watered them down to a childlike state. If you find a way to make these more clever and appealing to older audiences, this could very well be funny. As I've said, you have some good ideas, they're just executed poorly in my opinion. Still, this has potential.

Re: Big Stuff.

That last one didn't make a whole lot of sense. I know what you were going after, but it's hard to tell where to go from which picture, or even where the pictures are split.

The others were... okay, again. The first one probably would've been better if there was more to it, like him actually seeing the house on fire. The second one was probably the best of those posted, and I agree with William on the third one.

It may help to look around at the other comics and see what they use for humor - it may give you ideas for your comic (don't steal, but... you know what I mean).

When a friend recommended the same thing, I thought of having the burning house in the background on the third frame, but that was after I'd already posted it.

Yeah. We see a lot of different comics, but we aren't wanting to go with their humor, mainly because they'd do it way better. But we're still experimenting so we'll play around with it.

I have an idea that centers on holiday humor, but it's nowhere even close to that holiday, so I'm debating making it or not. And if not now, I might forget it, so maybe I'll just make it and store it somewhere safe.

You don't necessarily have to go with the type of humor, but it may give you ideas for jokes and such for your style.

What are you talking about? Where did I say I was joking? I wasn't joking, and I certainly don't think anything I said was funny. You really need to pay more attention to what people say, that's the second time you've missed something obvious.

Ooh! I found him! It's the second guy down on the rope. He has a gun and looks all cool, but I can't find anything that might kill him (immediately)

We made lots of things like that in school when we were bored. But its something a lot more entertaining to make than to look at, once you see one that's not yours. I would really like to see some of your ideas put into a sprite comic or sprite artwork, especially that last one. It would be great using video game sprites, I think. Until you do that, or make some other big change, I can't say I'm particularly interested. If you want help with making a sprite comic, just Pm me.

NEWP!

He's close, though. If you look closely, the black team member is being launched from a spring loader onto the cloud that the rope is tethered to. He's launching a gernade from one of his guns, which explodes, thus killing all the white team members on that cloud AND blowing up the rope's tether. The rope, now not tied to anything, falls, along with the guys on it.

I might. However, I don't really like sprite comics. I'm not all that good at them, they take too much work and I just don't like how the finished products look.
