Eh. It's not like Darth Vader is amazing, either, and you can just buy him if you want.
And besides, there are about 30 other characters in that game. :-P

But yeah, I've heard contradicting reports, and I cannot quite seem to find the truth. Half say Link is broken and thus banned from competitions. Half say Link is terrible and completely inviable for said competitions. Any sources? Are there any old tournament threads/sites where it mentions Link is banned? Or any brackets proving Link took last place?

I don't have absolute proof, and the II competitive community has sort of transitioned into IV (III was a horribly broken game due to a few glitches), so one would be hardpressed to find videos and threads now (stuff like that gets deleted). But believe me, because I was a part of the Soul Calibur II
Link is banned from tournament play because he is unavailable on the other 2 consoles. So, that means Spawn and Heihachi are banned, too.
Link is a terrible character in II because his moveset was ridiculously linear, and sidestepping in that game was amazing. This is also why Raphael was not that great in II, but at least Raph had a bigger moveset and movement options.
The thing that people often cite as to why Link is so good is his throw. He has a throw which is very good for ring-outs, and is very simple to do (just hit the A and B buttons at the same time on the GameCube controller, or A and R/L), and it's very easy to set up, since it throws enemies nearly behind Link. So, people who think they're good with Link just wait in front of the edge, and hit A and B together. Very easy and good tactic for one-player modes. However, any good player facing Link would just repeatedly mash A whenever they get grabbed.

I am very familiar with the Halo series, and a generic, no-name enemy from Halo would be a waste in Soul Calibur II.
Had Halo 2 come out before Soul Calibur II, it might have worked seeing as how The Arbiter is a sword-carrying, Elite that matters to it's storyline. However, that wasn't the case.
