A tier list is an ordered list of the characters based on their competitive value in the current metagame. It basically shows which characters are currently doing well in tournaments. Note that player skill is more important than character choice and match ups can overcome tier differences, but at an equal player level a bottom tier character will usually have a very tough time against a top tier character. This list will probably change over time, as Brawl is still relatively young and the Melee tiers were debated until the very end. So don’t give up on your character just yet, maybe you’re the one to make a difference!

The list was created by the SBR-B after much heated discussion. For the votes, we had members place the characters in groups from 1 to 15 (15 being the highest) and took the average score for each character. The split was decided by looking at the gaps. As the person supervising it, I’d like to thank all SBR-B members who contributed.

This chart shows the score each character got when the votes were averaged. The divisions were placed so that:

1. Gaps between tiers were relatively large, and
2. The spread within tiers was relatively small.

The particular number of tiers isn't special--that's just how the votes ended up. The majority of us believed that using a smaller number of tiers would be misleading, given the results.

Disappointed to see Ice Climbers dropping... hopefully I can help change that.

I'm disappointed to see Ike and Luigi have not gone up. In fact, I think they've dropped. Such underused characters, but I'd like to help change that a little, if at all. Marth is actually higher than I expected, but yeah.

Luigi dropped, but I think Ike stayed the same. Not too surprised about it.

Poor Ganondorf gets no love...

So this is about which characters are used more often? I heard Ike was an overused character. It's sad to see Link near the bottom, but imo they changed him for the worse. Sacrificing attack for speed when he already has a clone that does it was a bad move.

No, it's in relation to character match ups and how well characters perform at tournament levels of play. Ike's overused by the casual Smash fanbase because he's accessible and has insane strength. But at a more competitive type of game, his flaws become very apparent (slow, laggy etc.)

Yup, what Jeff said, Chad. Ike is competitively underused and I don't think the competitive fanbase is using him to his full potential. Same with Luigi. I think Ike can make high D tier and Luigi mid C at the highest. The Ike and Luigi mainers just need to get out there and prove it. ;_;

Chad: Agreed...poor Link. I can't believe Ninty took out his infinite jab (where you continuously press the A button and Link does repeated stabs/thrusts) and didn't incorporate a TP hidden skill or two (or even Wolf Link). Keeping the infinite jab and adding in the hidden skill(s) would have definitely buffed him some.

Lol @ Meta Knight having his own tier.

I think this list shows, competitively speaking, that people preffer speed over power. I will admit that speed is important in this game, but few things are more satisfying than catapulting someone to their doom after only doing around 50% damage.

I kind of like the Triforce Slash, but I really think Toon Link's move should have been the hurricane spin. Something different from adult Link, at least.

One of Link's taunts brings out a fairy. It should have been Midna, who comes out and laughs or something.

Well-said, Chad. I absolutely love sending people soaring at 50% damage when I use Ike.

Power rules!

Although I love doing fast aerials as well and that's where Luigi comes in. :3

I think priority, range and 'safeness' are the most important aspects in Brawl. Being able to space and avoid hits is crucial to this game, and characters that lack these qualities are never good ones. The safer the better.

I expected nothing less from Peach. I was even hoping she could get to her current tournament placing (14). And I bet that if her infinite on Wario was discovered earlier she would be a couple of spots above.

I'm a bit disappointed at Yoshi and Sonic not moving up. Yoshi has decent matchups across the tier and Sonic has been getting amazing tournament results.

Also, Luigi moved UP 2 places and Ike moved down 1 space.

Ike dropped, but I think he can go lower than Lucas and Ness. He's only good against a few characters, and his lack of speed really hurts him because he doesn't have many reliable ways of touching his opponents.

Hopefully this thread doesn't also become a 'Why isn't my favorite character higher?' thread. You want changes, go play in actual tournaments.
It's sad to see that Meta got a perfect rating.
I'm liking the more apparent ranks.
Olimar got a crazy rating.
Happy that Link went above Ganon.

Reflection, Aether (can be a guaranteed spike) and his range are what save him from being a complete loss.

And I have to try it more to see if its very consistent, but I found the other day that his Down-A while crouching can be a spike against a character holding onto a ledge.

D tilt has been known as a spike since the beginning of the game. It won't save him.

I think Ike is fine where he is. His spaceing is great due to his disjointed range and his priority is impressive. But he doesn't have the means to force an approach and he lacks a reliable one. And like half of his attacks either have a major startup time or cooldown lag. He is like a Zelda with a sword but without Din's fire :'D

In the weekly character SBR discussion, some good suff about Ike that were mentioned changed my mind about his suckage. You should check it.

I figured toon link would be a C tier, and a lot of characters I never thought of using are quite a ways up there. I haven't really liked diddy in the past, but is he really doing that well?

After two smashes with low links and marios, I think it's about time Nintendo beefed up their front runners.

No, but his range is what makes him a decent character, there's a lot of neat tricks you can do with that.
