Official SSBB Tier List

It's not listed on the site, so I'll post this for those who want to know their character's rank. It would be good if this got a sticky.

I'll just copy the post from Smash World Forums. Remember that this is only the first version, the list will change after the metagame is better understood. Also read M3D's reminders in the below quote.

After a full spring and summer of competition, the SBR felt as though it was time to take the first stab at a tier list for Brawl. Before I post it, let me remind you all of a few important things:


1. Tier placement doesn't necessarily reflect your ability to beat your friends with a specific character. You might beat your friend's Metaknight with Sonic, but that doesn't mean Sonic is top tier. It means you win that matchup against your friend. Tiers are not absolute measurements of match outcomes.

2. Instead of measuring match outcomes, tiers are more a measurement of potential of characters against the rest of the cast in a competitive, 1v1 tournament environment. It shows general strength of a character's abilities in a specific tournament environment. So yes, maybe Yoshi is a beast in teams or Ganon is REALLY good with items turned on... but this list measures somethingd different than those things.

3. This list is based on a combination of tournament result data, extensive discussions with top players and tournament hosts and looking at general trends in play in the current competitive metagame. It took a lot of work on the part of some of the best minds in Smash to compile this list.

4. This list might change with time. It is based on how we perceive the game to be and play it competitively NOW. However, if a replacement for l-canceling is discovered or new tactics cause the game to evolve over time, this list could change. So if you main a character that isn't near the top, keep playing and evolving their game. You might be the one, like Chu Dat's Ice Climbers back in Melee, that cause people's opinions to change.

5. That said, don't give up hope! Just because your character isn't ranked at or near the top, doesn't mean you can't do fantastic things with them with enough talent and effort. We do not publish this list to encourage players to change their main tournament character. If anything, it should serve as a challenge to take the game to the next level.

6. In Smash, any character can win in any matchup if you are smarter and better than your opponents by a wide enough margin. So keep playing to win and work hard to be the best player you can be, regardless of which character you use.

Most of it is all well and good except for the position of jigglypuff. She has the second best airgame in the game she should be atleast mid tier.

The only things I would change is put Ike a little higher and Luigi in high tier. Luigi has one of the best recoveries in the game and one of the better air games too. I've done five aerial moves in one jump with him. Fire Jump Punch is a killer in addition.

Ike trades in speed for pure power (whose even surpasses Bowser's) and if someone can work with his excellent range to get around that slow speed of his, they'll be reaping in KOs. It can get difficult, but with enough patience, an Ike player can be excellent and make a lot of wins. I don't think Ike can make any higher than higher up in the mid tier section, though, because of that speed.

Oh yeah, I think Toon Link should probably be higher too.

His dash attack is pure ****.

His forward smash is good, his down smash is pretty good also.

up smash is meh, and fire jump punch is a *****, cause if (and you will a lot) miss, you're so damn vulnerable...


Also toon Link should be a bit higher imo


What is with g&w on high tier, how good is he really?

I beg to differ. Luigi's air game is quite fast. Like I said, I have managed five air smashes in a single jump with him. That is fast. I don't think his dash attack is **** either. It's actually pretty good for knocking people out of range and deals a good amount of damage.

Fire Jump Punch is Luigi's best move. And for the record, I don't miss a lot with it. That's because my Luigi is very good.

I like that Link is low. He does have a HORRIBLE recovery, and making sure to always stay close enough to the edge is a *****. Yet I can still kick Meta Knight and Falco's ass :3

Of course, Ranil, you'll have your own opinions on your mains and believe they should be higher on the list, but that doesn't mean you're right.

By that same respect, I think Lucas and Toon Link are pretty good, but I'm not going to argue against the list because of it.

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but those opinions are all wrong until they start attending competitions (and winning).

Because then, I wasn't as good at making it hit as I am now. Now, I'm better at it.

Etcetera: Of course. I wasn't intending on saying I was right. It's just an opinion.

IC's should be top tier. I mean if I can grab you once and you are dead I'd say that deserves being top tier. And Jiggly is veeery underrated. Second best air game in all of brawl deserves a higher placement.

The SBR is discussing the ICs right now. The problem is that it is all theory craft at this point. No one has taken the time to practice up and win a significantly sized tournament yet. The tier list is based off evidence, not potential.

I should watch more MK vids...

Anyway, that list seems pretty much on the dot, I would have expected Jiggly to be at least Medium, and Toon Link to be High.

I main Ike, and I find him to be around the right place. He is just too slow to be high, despite his excelent power. Really, with the right timing, the lack of speed doesn't matter, but that is based on the player.

I mained Meta Knight when I first got Brawl because I thought he looked the most awsome, and I did like him, but I found Ike alot more rewarding.

Does anyone main Sonic here? So many players online play him, and they always fail. All this hype about him being in it was short lived I suppose.

G&W is waaaaaay better than his Melee version.

ICs were good because of chain grabs, high damage combos, and all around speed. Wavedashing helped the speed area, but that was hardly the reason they were so good.

Lucario should not be top tier... not even close...

Jiggly lost everything good about her.

In all seriousness, I feel that Toon Link should be a bit higher than Normal Rank. I'm not saying he's the best character, but he's certainly better than Wario.

I wouldn't put TLink higher than Wario. What are your reasons?

Well, (I guess this is just my opinion) most people I know don't consider Wario to be a good character. His FS sucks, for one.
Toon Link has better moves to 'adapt to the ebb and flow of battle'.

I can't remember the other reasons right now. :/
