EA's Tutorial Shop

I'm a beginner, and I'm confused. I have PSCS, and I like to make sigs. Thing is, I can't make the pics 'blend' with the backround. Er... I hope you know what I mean...
Like, I copy and paste the pic, and the white backround can't be changed. Something like that...

o-o Bad use of brushes combined with a total lack of style. Oh, and go into the text options thingy for that crappy sideways text. Seriously, xelink, don't post wierd requests like these in the Shop. I'd rather use my time explaining useful information, than waste posts explaining how to make a crappy Sig.
For the record, though: Almost every Sig has a layer for text, subtext, piccie and if you really want to get technical, also a layer for borders [I do mine a little differently, though]. Seriously, That Sig you posted looks like some game screen with wierdly-placed and -sized text pasted over it. If you couldn't be bothered making a new layer for the border, you can set an inner glow on the piccie, black, 1px and set the option above pixel size [i'm not at home right now to check, and I never really look at what the option is called] to it's highest. Set the glow setting to Normal [as opposed to Screen or Multiply or whatever the default is >.<]. Voila. Black border. Or, alternatively, you could just use a 1px Pencil and draw the border onto the pic. Though just using the layer style is arguably cooler and quicker. But yeah, i'd rather take serious requests than ones trying to humiliate the Shop. I've made those kinds of requests before, so I can easily recognise them.

Let that be a warning to all of you. Posts shall be deleted.

TeleIce, I will get back to you. I started writing an explanation off the top of my head [again, I am not at home right now], but then realised it would be more practical to just make some screens and explain it to you by visuals. Easier to explain, easier for you to understand, etc. I will write it up for you tonight, at home where I can do it more efficiently.

Keep the insults out of here, please. EA, that does include you, too.

Same to you, Unknown. This is a Tutorial Shop, not a Rating Shop. If you want me to rate something, PM me. I will be more than happy to oblije. I simply do not want to clutter up the Shop, so that people can easily browse through it and see if their problem has already been explained, without having to weed though all the crap.

TeleIce, I have that Tut ready for you. It is on disk and ready for upload, but as I am forced to use the library at this stage in life, certain problems will arise. Right now, I am at a library that I can't upload anything at. Later today, I will go to another library just to upload your Tut. Promise.

Okay, Thanks, this really helps. One more ?, how do you select the 'whole' backround with the magic wand?

I am assuming you mean the parts that are blocked off, or something. Simply hold shift while clicking with the Wand again. This adds to the selection. Alt takes from the selection. These work with all selection tools, by the way.

I don't know if you can help me but I was wondering if you could help me with Paint Shop Pro. 7. I was wondering how you can get the backround of a pic a clear color and how you can make a cool backround for a sig. Thanks if you can.

I'll get back to you. I used to use PaintShop Pro, a while ago. I used v8.0, but i'm pretty sure the fundamentals aren't too different with v7.0. Oh, and I advise you upgrade to Version 9. I have, but I never really need to open it up. Heh, PaintShop runs on everything, so I don't see why you shouldn't.

Anyway, like I said, i'll get back to you. About removing the background, though, it's pretty much the same between Photoshop and PaintShop. See what I said about selecting above, and refer to TeleIce's tutorial for more pointers.

And to make a cool background, just play around with the effects until you get something that looks nice. Last year I made this for myself with some sunburst and kaleidoscope effects: http://graphics.aussieposse.net/bg1.png

Well, I will admit that I didn't expect too much obedience to my rules. All irrelevant posts will be deleted, I refuse to allow clutter. Believe me, it will be better for this kind of Shop in the long run to have only the relevant posts up. The relevant posts being proper requests and their replies. Divine, I appreciate the thought, but i'm afraid I will have to have your post deleted, too. I'm writing a huge explanation anyway, which kind of disvalidifies your post. I hope you understand. Right, there seems to be one thing on everybody's mind: backgrounds. Now I don't care if you use PS, Paint, PSP, GIMP, or your fanny-ass Tablet in Picture-It! Express, the fundamentals are the same. Experiment.

For those using programs supporting Layers, you have a very huge opportunity here. Making a background is all well and good, but combining effects to make a better, more unique background can be better. And I say "can be" with a great deal of affection. Now, those not using Photoshop may be confused by the term "filters." I know I was until I started using PS. Filters are basically part of an effect. They change an existing image in some way, from either distorting or adding something to it or whatever. You combine filters to create an effect. Experiment. Find out what each thing does. Find out how you can tweak it. Find out what happens when you combine two filters and then find out what that does when you put another filter on that. Find out what works and use that knowledge to get the look you are going for. That's all, really, I can say. If you showed me a specific background, I may be able to reverse-engineer it for you, but "cool" can mean many things and it's really up to you to figure out what you like.

My apologies, Pyroth, I couldn't find the disk for PSP 8, so I can't really specifically Tut you on that. It's generally the same as PS, though, with a few minor differences, so I hope the above explanation suffices.

Hope you don't mind if I butt in, EA, but I think I can make an educated guess on how that banner is made: the designer found or took a photograph of a side-view mirror from a car and put in a picture from Burnout 3: Takedown or Burnout Revenge. He then applied some yellowish, orangish and redish brushes to make the wipeout seem more "heated" or "blazing". Afterwards, he placed a picture of some building and used the top and bottom limits of the banner to make it seem well-blended without needing to do much work. After that was done, s/he brushed it up a little, used color balance or another effect to make it stick out a little more. He then applied some text.


I may be wrong, but that's what it looks like to me.

Let's just keep the rest of this by PM, Radek, xelink. I am only allowing this as it is because it is technically an answer to what is technically a request, which I am not willing to fulfil myself.
