Obama's speech to students next week...

Why the hell is everybody flipping out over this? All he's going to talk about is how its important for students to stay in school, just like your parents told you a thousand times before, and people are refusing to let their kids watch it. They think he's trying to influence them to his political views or something.

What do you think about this? Are you worried about it like so many people are, or are you like me and just think the controversey surrounding it is ridiculous? If you don't even know what I'm talking about, turn on any news channel. One of them is probably talking about it.

Re: Obama's speech to students next week...

It does sound silly people making an issue out of this.

BTW I checked BBC news. There nothing on about Obama making a speech. Can you post an article or something?

So Obama's not allowed to talk to students, because he could corrupt their minds? Am I understanding this correctly?

My school actually required parents to sign permission slips for students to attend. I can't really describe how stupid this whole controversy is.

Re: Obama's speech to students next week...

Apparently the whole fiasco stems from a poorly-chosen word. If the lesson plan had said "how they can help the country" instead of "how they can help the president", he could have avoided these 'cult of personality' accusations. Nonetheless, I doubt that the wording was his choice; since it was distributed by the Dept of Education, it seems more likely that they were trying to make the 'speech from the president' event more impactful on the day's lesson - if there had been a speech from Ronald McDonald, the Dept probably would have made the lesson plan would have revolved around McDonald's. It was just a "hey kids! Isn't this an interesting theme?" kind of thing.

It certainly is worrying how low his approval ratings among Rebublicans are. In fact, that gives me an idea for a new thread...

The people who spew **** like this:
Quote:
"Thinking about my kids in school having to listen to that just really upsets me," suburban Colorado mother Shanneen Barron told CNN Denver affiliate KMGH. "I'm an American. They are Americans, and I don't feel that's OK. I feel very scared to be in this country with our leadership right now."
Are the same people who ban civil unions for homosexuals, want pseudoscience religious dogma taught in school, and wouldn't vote a Buddhist or agnostic for president. I call conservative idiocy here.

Re: Obama's speech to students next week...

I can't even begin to tell you how stupid that is.

What, now the president is no longer allowed to encourage students to go to school and suceed? Hello! One of those kids may be a future President! What a wonder it'd be when that future president says: "The reason I'm here is because of President Obama!"

Sheesh, stupid overly-protective parents. This should show you just how they failed if the frocking president has to step in and tell the kids they need to go to school.

They may as well say: "Kids! We don't want you to be encouraged to go to school and potentially have good lives! We want your lives to be really frocked up!"

Actually, stuff like this was more common then. I remember growing up occasionally seeing messages on TV and the beginning of some kids movies with George Bush (the first one) and Clinton telling us to say no to drugs or somesuch.

Re: Obama's speech to students next week...

It's funny that America is so bloody partisan that they can no longer even pretend it's otherwise.

Also, the wording is stupid. Probably not Obama's fault, but still stupid. Fix that and let's move on plz.

Re: Obama's speech to students next week...

I was disappointed when I first heard about this. The newspaper article had the title "Obama kicked out of class". I thought it'd be something cool like the president being forced out of a school, but turns out it's typical America.

Obama is an American too.

Also, were you scared to be in this country with Bush's leadership? Cus I can assure you that Bush was a lot stupider than Obama is.
