Using the portraits of those famous men, or any actual symbol representing those ideals, would be infinitely more acceptable in my view than using national symbols. It's effectively going through a "middle-man" in your support.

I don't. I can think of very few people that I've known who were raised that way. In fact, most people in my religious community describe a religiously empty childhood.
