Iraqi men captured crossing the border
In STAR county, near where i live, 3 iraqi men were discovered by the border patrol commin into the US via the mexican border. They had made arangements to be smuggled in, but they were caught and have now been arrested.. Could this be a possible infiltration of terrorsim? Only these 3 were captured, but how many cross over with the 100 of illegal immigrants everyday? And do you think they might use this to further tighten immigration laws?

Re: Iraqi men captured crossing the border
Why is the assumption automatically that it could be an infiltration of terrorism?

Re: Iraqi men captured crossing the border
Of course, it's Iraqi's, it must be terrorists.
The massive xenophobia the U.S. has is incredible.

Re: Iraqi men captured crossing the border
This article lacks any information for an educated guess one way or the other.
Current immigration policies and discrimination against people of Middle Eastern descent would make it very hard for an actual migrant from Iraq get into the US. Thus an extralegal method for migrating to the US might be the only plausible method for them. Given that Mexico would be easier to smuggle people overseas into than the US, and the land border is easier to cross than by sea or air, this would be optimal. Of course this could be applied for both terrorists and migrant workers looking for a job. One would also have to consider the only piece of information from the article. Would refugees from Iraq be able to afford a $20,000 trip. Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to find work somewhere in Europe? Then again, could any terror cells in Iraq be able to organize something like this? Quite frankly, I question the idea that Al Queada is so well organized without proper training and communications facilities. The big booms of 9/11 would have us think otherwise were it not for the fact that said more about the Bush Administration's Incompetence. Regardless, this will be used as cannon fodder by people opposed to the shutdown of Guantanamo Bay and Immigration Minutemen. |

Re: Iraqi men captured crossing the border
Funnily enough, it's kind of ridiculous to use this story as incentive to tighten laws as essentially it's a case of the system working. Mind you, all of this is conjecture as the article did not provide us enough information as to whether these men are just migrants. They didn't tell us what these men were found with nor what their identities are. Do they seem like they are skillful with more than just menial labor tools? Do they have any memorabilia of family?
