M0re Americans becoming nonbelievers

This article says more and more americans are becoming atheist.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090309/...igious_america

If you go to my school that's certainly the case.
I think my school is about 80% nonreligious.

Maybe the United States is entering a new age of reason?
It has happened atleast twice before, in the mid eighteenth century and again in the early ninteenth century.

Share your thoughts, please.

Not really, belief in a religion is very regional and these statistics mean very little. America as a whole is not entering a new age of reason imo.

Why does it matter?

If they want to become religious, let them.
If they don't, then fine.

Sounds a bit too good to be true, really, glass jar Americans aren't really known for their multiple religious viewpoints...

Re: M0re Americans becoming nonbelievers

Well, I watched that documentary called 'Religilous' or something titled like that, and I am surprised at how pathetic everything is based on religion in this country. I wouldn't be surprised if my school goes into a rampage and begins banging their bibles into my skull (since I only know of about four people who aren't Christian there, me included). If it were to enter a new age, I don't know what would happen to anything anymore. It'd crumble.

I'd also like to clarify my post that "glass jar Americans" doesn't refer to "All Americans live in glass jars", but to define those who I would say live in "glass jars", such as the majority in the Bible Belt.

I am going to have to agree, but I'm not sure if I should really speak my mind because religious debates can put you in sticky situtions. But I will say one thing, I do consider myself an atheiest, and have my reasons. I don't speak for all Americans, but I certainly speak for myself. Most of my friends are atheists (or rather they don't God), but we are all open minded.

That's what happens when a large percent of the population have "If I trust in God nothing bad can happen" attitudes and a combination of political and financial tribulation occurs on a semi-massive scale.

Re: M0re Americans becoming nonbelievers

I think the OP is confusing nonbeliever with nonreligious. Just because someone doesn't belong to a particular religious sect doesn't mean that they're automatically an atheist, e.g. myself. I don't profess to belonging to any particular branch of Christianity, though I do attend a Baptist church due to it being the only church in my area.

Just saying.

Also, I Ctrl+F'd that beast and found there to be no use of the words atheist, atheism, or agnostic, so yeah.

Re: M0re Americans becoming nonbelievers

What about the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag? Kids say "One Nation, Under God, Indivisible, and Liberty and Justice for All" everyday. Freedom of Religion has been here since Pilgrims came here, but I don't know where Atheism came from.

Re: M0re Americans becoming nonbelievers

The Pledge had "Under God" added in the 50s. Same with "In God we Trust" on the currency.

The "reasoning", such as it is, went thusly: We're against the Communists. Russian Communists outlawed Christianity. Therefore we'll fight back against the filthy Commies by endorsing Christianity!

So, yeah...

What's more, several key founding fathers were atheist/deist, which means that atheism has been in the US as long as it's been a country.

Wow, so they put the phrase "Under God" and "In God we Trust" just to make them mad in a way. Today aren't most leaders a believer?

It's because the Most Hated Family of America has now entered Holland so the average religion-level in America has significantly decreased yet it significantly increased in Holland.

Re: M0re Americans becoming nonbelievers

I read an article on the existence of God on Wikipedia and it turned me into an Atheist so I guess you can count me in there too

Now a paradoxical question for fun: could God cook a burrito so hot that he himself could not eat it? After all, he is almighty, so he "can" do it. But, if he's almighty, wouldn't he be able to eat it?

Re: M0re Americans becoming nonbelievers

Well, people are always going to need some sort of thing to turn to for answers.

Either they come up with their own or they follow one that's already been based, but saying that a whole nation is becoming nonreligious is wrong.

I, for one, do not follow a faith specifically, yet I do believe in God.

Re: M0re Americans becoming nonbelievers

It doesn't even matter.

I am atheist though. I wonder the possibilities to everything though, but I KNOW evolution is real. I can prove it to you. There is also one good evidential thing about the big bang too, but butbutbut, there is one evidential thing to give gods existence. If matter cannot be created nor destroyed, then how is it here, but if god weren't real, then matter could be created. |Just a bunch of possibilities.

Well, that argument of religious is as easily countered as created - "what if that matter was here all the time"?

But if all required a creator, wouldn't, by that logic, God also require a creator? And his creator would require a creator, ad infinitum?
