Being able to understand why a person commited an act doesn't excuse it, and being able to see the reasoning behind an act doesn't make the act reasonable (I don't know if that makes sense but you know what I mean).
But yeah, I'm not getting the bloodlust that other people in this thread are either. I agree that rehabilitation is a good idea. It does seem like he did just crack under annoying conditions and react poorly (albeit
extremely poorly), and it's really just a tragedy for everyone involved.
He should be punished, though. We need to not only provide a deterant against such carelessness, but educate others about the fact that applying such force to a young child can be fatal, and that negligence of that sort will be punished.
