Everyone seems to have a romanticized view of medieval times, but most of us wouldn't last ten minutes. I mean we've all watched the survival shows, so we'd probably last a good while, except you'd need the basic equipment for that too.

Cukeman, last summer, I taught kids about the construction of the pyramids. Why was the construction so incredible? Because the Egyptians did use simple machines, such as ramps, to create the pyramids. Yes, it's hard to believe that they managed to do such a thing without any sort of modern technology. What's more amazing is that each block had to be perfectly level with the rest of the blocks. It's impressive. But they did not ****ing use sound.

Sure there are less diseases now. But what does that lead to? Overpopulation. The first time the world hit 1 billion was around 1835 and in less than 200 years its skyrocketed to 7 billion.

Obviously not healthy. For us or the planet.

In all seriousness, though Sparta was one of the less ****ed up places in the world at the time it still was a highly ****ed up place. You'd almost instantly regret going back to those times.

The reason humanity had such a small population was because of disease.
You owe your life to advances in medicine. I guess it's to be expected that younger generations take everything they have for granted.

You wouldn't last a second if you had to live a hunter gatherer lifestyle.

There is one very limited sense in which Cukeman may have a point.

That is, hunting and gathering societies enjoyed longer life spans and better nutrition than the early agricultural societies. Many people might find this unbelievable (I myself was surprised) but it is supported by archaeological evidence. It is hypothesized that these hunter gatherer societies had a more egalitarian social structure as well.

After the agricultural revolution, resources became unequally distributed. Those at the stop of the social structure, the upper class, did very well. But it was a step back for everyone else.

By modern times, through technology we have remedied the initial shortcomings of agriculture and enjoy very advanced lives indeed. I am so grateful to live in a time where evidence based medicine is practiced and a society that continues to improve and become more just for all.

No one ever said they don't play a role in modern society. The thing is that the black plague killed half of Europe in the 1300's, and now it can be cured easily with antibiotics. Obviously disease played a much larger role before modern medicine. I don't see what you're trying to argue, honestly.

The nature of disease has changed substantially.

In the first world, we have a pretty good hold on infectious disease. We no longer have to worry about a third the population being wiped out by an epidemic.

As was suggested, now we largely face lifestyle illnesses like heart disease and cancer. This is obviously a direct result of food being easier to acquire and a more sedentary style of life.

If you're like me, you prefer the second dilemma. After all, lifestyle diseases can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. Surviving infectious disease back in the day was often a matter of luck.

We're not just facing illnesses that occur because of lifestyle differences (since you should really check out the rates of those illnesses by country and ethnicity). We're also dealing with illnesses that occur with old age. Alzheimer's, anyone?

Right. Which is again a direct effect of improved technology. People live older because of improved living conditions. This is a classic example of how science/technology solves one problem and creates another. But this unavoidable situation should not be held against it. After all, people are living longer lives!

Alzheimer's is a dreadful disease, no doubt. I've only met one person who had it (a friend's grandpa, a WWII vet). It was very uncomfortable to be in his presence. I felt so guilty when he kept asking me the same questions, not a trace of levity in his demeanor.

It is perhaps the disease I fear most since it destroys your personality. We can only hope for more advancements in the coming years.
