Time Travel. Real or not?

It turns out that time travel isn't so fake after all. Sure, we are years away from developing a time traveling system, but it might be able to get accomplished. Its already kinda happened really. People who returned from space were 1 second younger then they were when they left.

What do you think about time travel? Is it possible?

While Temporal Theory is an absolutely FASCINATING topic, Time Travel will forever remain in the realm of science fiction, if you ask me.

Ha, more to the point, whoop dee doo.

Yea 1 second younger that makes a world of difference.

Time travel will never be real in any useful sense of the term.

I have to agree with Sage of Earth. I doubt we'll ever be getting our hands on any DeLoreans.

More to the point people, what difference does it make?

You can't deage, this is basically just a time dilation effect.

Cryogenics has years more research behind it, and most likely alot cheaper than what is implied here.

The way it worked was quite simple: two stop watches, started at exactly the same time.

The one in the space/aircraft progressed miliseconds slower than the one on the ground. Now, that isn't very startling. But it proved Einstein's Theory of Relativity, in which, the faster you go, the more time slows down(for you). Which means that, in theory, if you could move -fast enough-, you could travel backwards into time.

but does that really prove anything besides that in space, as well as anywhere else, a watch can malfunction?

doesn't really say anything about the people "going back in time/age"?

Re: Time Travel. Real or not?

I don't know if time travel is something you'd even want to mess with. Has anyone seen that movie (yes, I'm sure it's Hollywood-ized, but still a decent example) where a man tries to go back in time to save his fiancee from being killed, but everytime she just dies a different way (fate). Then he finally gives up and goes forward in time, just to see the Earth almost destruct due to the greed of man? I know those are both probably far fetched examples, but my point is, do you really want to know what will happen to the human race in the future, and why would you even want to bother going back in time if it was only to find out fate is inevitable?

Re: Time Travel. Real or not?

You can't travel back in time, that is not what the theory implies.
Rather it implies that one could travel into the future without aging.

The watches were effectively the exact same, and the test was repeated many times. It was done during the Space Race by both the US and Soviet Union. The results were comparable.

Oh I see. Well, in that case, aging is inevitable as well. One second doesn't increase wrinkles, so this theory overall cannot prove anything.

oh, that's kinda snazzy.

doesn't get me beleiving we will be travelling through time or be messing with aging with that method anytime soon though ^_^

Re: Time Travel. Real or not?

Well theoretically if one moved fast enough, one could in essence stop time for the moving observer, upon returning to the origin point, time will have advanced normally for everyone else, and the traveller will be in that origin point's future.

Re: Time Travel. Real or not?

The theory of relativity holds that the closer you get to the speed of light, the more time slows down for you. Theoretically if you can travel faster than light, you will either stop, or go back in time. However, among other factors why this is wrong, you can't actually go faster than the speed of light.
