Nature or Nurture

What defines how a child will turn out?

Nature or Nurture?

Lite Explanation;

Nature; Genetics, inherited characteristics of parents/ancestors

Nurture; How they are raised/treated as they grow up.

Re: Nature or Nurture

A combo of both. Some traits humans have naturally, hair color, eye color, need to eat and so on. Others are acquired traits, traits that humans have to learn. This is where humnas find their place in society and learn how to act.

Basically, If there could somehow be two realities, and i was raised by my parents in one and my friend's parents, I would be completely different.

Re: Nature or Nurture

I think it's a bit of both but i think nurture is more important because nobody is born a certain way.

Some qualities we get from our parents through birth, but if you're talking about personality, it is almost entirely nurturing.

Re: Nature or Nurture

Other then the stuff we get through genetics(eye color, hair color and so on)

Nurture will play a larger role in the end. I kid who is raised in a violent home will be completely different then those born in a loving home.

But also, some tendencies some say are genetic, sense of humor, temper, general additude and so on.
I don't really believe that, just worth noting I think.

Re: Nature or Nurture

I remember seeing a documentary on this. There was a boy who had a messed up circumcision so they just lopped it all off and the mom tried to raise him as a girl. this worked for quite some time, but then the boy figured out that he was actually a guy. I believe the thing ended with him killing himself.

So, I would say nature is the best way to go for that.

But nurture also plays a big role. Like some people have said, if you're raised in a certain way, you'll turn out like that (Emotions and Traits)

So...both are good I guess.

Not so, me and my brother have had the same upbringing. He has a temper like fire, I am as cool as ice.

I doubt that your parent (or whoever raised you) have treated you and your brother exacty the same. Or that you and your brother have had exactly the same experiences.

OH they treated us pretty close to the same. We even got the same christmas presnets. Even as a baby, my brother was more agresssive, and I was more quiet.

Still, most experts seem to agree that it's about 50/50 nature and nurture.

So, you can be born aggressive or passive, but this can be moderated by how you're raised.

Re: Nature or Nurture

I think it's more nurture then nature. My sister and I couldn't be more different. Nature plays a part but it's more nurture then anything.

Also, the way I act has changed a lot, I tend to be much calmer then I used to be.

I think it's definatly both but I am leaning toward the nurture side as the most dominant.

Re: Nature or Nurture

I think that's in the balance when it comes to nurture or nature. We inherit a lot from both of our parent's sides, but even though we might have siblings where we are raised in the same way, it's different. Some of our brothers and sisters might be nicer or meaner than who you are.
But there might be some similarities when it comes to liking or hating something, because it's the part of nature, but it could also be nurture.

I'm not too sure. It's just a balance of the two.

Re: Nature or Nurture

It's a mixture of genetic and learned behavior where learned behavior can trump your inherent nature.

Re: Nature or Nurture

Some Christians believe we're all born with original sin.....thought I'd bring that up.

Think it's a bit off topic, but oh well.
