Racism
I'm half Mex, half other. I live in a small city full of stupid racists. Most of the kids at school are racists against Mexicans, therefore they hate me.
I punched a kid in his chest just for calling me 'Lil Mexican Guy. I'M AN AMERICAN CITIZEN PEOPLE. In America, anyone is a citizen as long as they are legal. I've never seen or crossed the border. Closest I've been is, 100 mile. What am I supposed to do? Please tell me, because I can't stand a life like this.

Anyways, though, whatever. **** happens, and I'm going to assume they're all being absurd jerks because they're probably somewhere between the ages of 12 and 18 (probably the lower end of the spectrum, since their insults seem to be absolutely pathetic and not involve any actual physical threat against you personally). Don't worry - at that age, everybody's going to make fun of you for everything that they can. College will be better. ^^;

Re: Racism
Racism could've been solved a long time ago if people of different races didn't give reason for racism. That's how stereotypes get started, with even a small ounce of truth. I won't lie, I can be very prejudiced, but only because I've been given reason to be as such.

Re: Racism
Was he being blatantly mean to you because you were Mexican, or were you over reacting because he identified you as such?
I've known people to freak out when identified as their own race. If I had a black friend named Joe, and he was talking to three white guys in a corner, and someone came and asked me: "Which one is Joe?", I'd say "The black guy." People find that racist for some reason. He's black. Big deal.

Re: Racism
Ignore it, take it in stride, graduate, and write a book on it later. People are racist about as much as the person being harassed actually cares about racism.
I doubt you happened to snap one day and pop the guy in the stomach for a rather benign 'racist' comment. I would guess you've been openly critical and reactive to such things before the incident. This is why they continue to treat you so. |

Re: Racism
I'm sorry, but you did overreact. You said you punched him in the chest, right? That's an overreaction. There are better ways to deal with stuff like that.

Re: Racism
Overreaction? No, but you could've solved the problem differently. I know that many races get picked on by racist people who are usually white. I can't say I know how to the racism your going through but I do know that you should stick up for yourself in a manner of words, not violence. By this, I mean stand up for yourself but don't go verbally abusing the racist person. You might have pier pressure or some sort of reluctance created by your environment but nonetheless, have courage.
Where I live, there isn't racism against blacks, hispanics, arabs, etc. but rather a flipped system of racism although it is not shown very much. There are wannabe black people who are in fact white. They would make comments like, "cause I'm black" or something like that. Myself, I am white and yet I don't try to be black, gangsta, or anything else related to that but just be myself. This does not compare other racist acts though. |

Re: Racism
Violence is not the answer. I'd think you should have talked to a teacher or principal about this, instead of punching kids.

Re: Racism
wait, he said li'l mexican guy... How is that a bad thing? Since when is mexican an insult? Had he said filthy mexican or something like that, then it's a different thing, but he didn't do anything but calling you small/unimportant/whatdoIknow. He didn't deserve a punch in the chest, you should've said something like " You can't insult me better than calling me a mexican? You're sad..."
Racism isn't to stop identifying races, but to get rid of the negative meaning of the words like "black". You are mexican, don't be offended if someone calls you one.

Re: Racism
Racism isn't as dangerous as most people make it out to be. Stupid, yes, but people get too emotional over it.

Re: Racism
It's dangerous if manifested outwardly. Inwardly, I couldn't care less. Just as long as policy isn't made because of it.

Re: Racism
You are lucky that you didn't get suspended for punching that person. If you keep punching people when they insult you, they will get a message saying that they are getting to you and continue to do it. If you ignore them, they might stop. Now that you punched him, it probably isn't a good idea to tell a teacher because he might say "Yeah I called him names and then he punched me."
Anyway, I do admit that racism still exists, but it isn't as bad as it was 50 years ago. Last year, the people in one of my classes were talking about it and an Asian girl said that people give her looks in the hallway. I am white and people give me looks too. Think about how they use the word "Mexican" and try to find out if they are really trying to be mean to you. |
