US still sexist?

I think so! Long ago, females couldn't get jobs, weren't well payed, and were thought of as a sort of... lesser type. Well, people send sorts of messages through TV, the probably most popular thing.

Yeah, females are in all movies and shows, right? Well, either they don't say anything or they're stupid! They're hardly ever important! Mulan not included, females are hardly ever heroes. Could this mean that the US is still sexist?

Re: US still sexist?

its sometimes difficult for an older generation to let go of some principles. Although huge steps are made to improve the equitability between the sexes sometimes in my opinion they go too far. Yes north america is still sexist but not as much as it was... Not even close actually.

Re: US still sexist?

Um, you cant judge a group of people or country based on the acts of certin people.

you know why? because if you do, your just like them, you judge a group of people based on the actions of others, then you might as well be racist/sexsist.

So no US is not sexist, its just those people who are.

you know i laugh when people discriminate against certin types of people, yet they think they are in no way the same, because when you discriminate against someone your doing the same things they are, of course its not the exact same but close.

so is US sexist? No, are certin people sexist? Yes.

*mumbles under his breath* Why cant they see you cant judge a group of people based on few people, because everyone is diffrent and not the same...

Re: US still sexist?

There will never be complete equality. Never. It's impossible. Inequality is a part of humans. Like one is always a little better or worse then the other and so on.
There will also always be income gaps. Poor people, stinking rich people, middle class which is a form of inequality too. In some jobs women are more preferred and in others men. It varies. But it'll never be like both get the same with everything.

This sounds like a tounge-in-cheek, overt-Feminist rant. Thats like saying that the US is still racist, because blacks are profiled more in crimes and that they're always portryed as thugs and criminals in movies and TV shows. Really, America is already swarmed with being politically-correct about everything.

I believe Tre summed it up nicely, you can't say that all of America is sexist, based on the actions of a few. After all, when you say all of the US, that includes the women living here too.

You don't think women are stupid? Look at this!

http://www.hedonistica.com/media.php...al-meaning.wmv

Of course, I'm kidding. You can never define a type of something by saying "well look at this, this and this." Once again we need to learn that male, female, black, white or whatever, we're all just people and those things have no bearing on a person's capacity as a human being.

Wrong. There are more females cast as the heroine of a movie than you could shake a stick at. Tomb Raider, Aeon Flux, Underworld, Alien, Terminator 2, X-men, Matrix, and G.I. Jane are just to name a few movies with women as heroes.

Re: US still sexist?

Know why? Because Hollywood never gets the female hero right. Either they're too bad-ass to be believable, or too pansy to be believable as a hero. Choose your pick. Very rarely is the female hero balanced enough to be perfect.

Same with the guys, they're either uber studs, or they couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. It's the same in every Hollywood movie. Why? Because acting really is about being larger then life, no one would pay to see a mediocre hero who was just like them, a few might, but I doubt that it'd be a boxoffice hit.

You'll find the #1 boxoffice hit of all time was Titanic and that was just the story of ordinary non-superheroes . Of course, it was based on a true story and it was a romance so it doesn't really work as an example >.<.

Correction: Based on actual events, not a true story.

Now for the topic at hand. In a way, alot of people (not all) do have some sexist views. Ask people if they would like to see a woman as president. I myself have views that die hard feminist would consider sexist, such as the man being the head of the house hold, not to say that he is to be the lord over his wife.

Thanks, I am glad someone agrees with me. Also Nox gots a point, the US is NOT made up of only men, you can't forget that the US is made up of women, and i dont know about you but i have never seen a female that was sexist against other females.

Also, they are not always, take L&O:SVU. Olivia is one of the main characters in the show, she is not stupid clumsy or whatever, shes smart and intelegent(sp) Also look at the shows A.D.A. They are all female. Notice how they all talk and are not stupid.

If i must show more proof of this, take 7th Heaven for example. Most of the women on that show are smart and they do talk.

Take Scully from the X-Files, she was smart and one of the main characters.

No, only the people who are sexist are sexist. You can not judge a group of people based on the actions of a few.

EDIT:

Well this is interesting, from your profile your from the united states, is this true? are you from the states? So, Icestorm if this is indeed true, your sexist? from your conclusion US is sexist, you according to your profile are from the US? so a sexist making a topic about the sexist?

Well, anyways if you are not isexist and are from the US, that just proves that the US is NOT sexist, just those who are.

Which kind of ends the debate of the US being sexist because not all americans are sexist just those people who are.

Re: US still sexist?

Hey no one said i was perfect

besides even if i was that was never my intentions, unlike the creater of this thread or anyone else like that. My intentions were to explain that you cant judge a group of people based on a few of them, because everyone is diffrent.

Re: US still sexist?

People will always be sexest, also, people will always be rascist. Where ever you go in the world there's going to be at least un-spoken tension between races and genders. Humans are just like that. The definition of sexest is stupid anyway, no one lives up to this perfect standard of political correctness where they see every human as equals. We just don't live in that type of world.

Re: US still sexist?

now there is sexism of a differnt type. Females have a much lower competative average to get into science univerisity courses, and males have to pay way more on their car insurance.
