Joe Arpaio must be destroyed

This was a topic on another board I go to, and we discussed it in IRC awhile back. Now I'm copypasting it here. Have fun, kids.

Joe Arpaio is a disgusting piece of **** who rules over the largest county of Arizona. In the American media, he is considered a hero who is TOUGH ON CRIME. In reality, Joe Arpaio is almost a feudal warlord, oppressing those in his fiefdom with brutality. He has a little tank that costs taxpayers millions, and sees no problem with burning down someone's house because he does not like them. If you are imprisoned in Maricopa County and have some sort of medical problem, you will very likely die, even if you are only staying for a night.

Arpaio's most well-known achievement is the venerable TENT CITY. The American media enjoys mocking those imprisoned there, being made to wear layers of pink clothing in the baking sun. This fits with the psychotic American belief that criminals must be punished, rather than rehabilitated.

What they do not tell you is that Arpaio does not operate an actual prison, where criminals go. He runs a jail, which you might not be aware of, is host to people who are awaiting trial, and those who have committed very minor offences. Joe Arpaio, then, is doing these things to people who have not been proven guilty in a court of law.

It documents in full how disgusting this man is. Here are some excerpts:

• He'll kill your dog and burn your house down if you get in his way (while simultaneously crushing your neighbor's car with an armored personnel carrier).

• Your tent-mates are the least of your worries, however. Joe will beat you death even if you're blind (and destroy evidence in a cover-up attempt), although to be fair to Joe he really only beat that guy partway to death- he only died after being left unattended in a cell for 6 days from the perforated intestine and broken neck he got from the beating- last time he gets picked up for shoplifting.

• Don't count on a wheelchair earning you any sympathy from America's Toughest Sheriff, either. If you go to jail as a paraplegic on a 1-gram marijuana possession charge and ask for a catheter to piss in, you might just leave as a quadruplegic after you get a 6-hour ride in a restraint chair followed by a guard breaking your neck.

• Mentally-handicapped? Too bad, you might get killed in the chair too- on a loitering charge.

• Hope you don't have diabetes, cause you might not get insulin even if you go and die on him, like Deborah did.

• My next Arpaio fun fact really stretches the imagination. He staged his own assassination attempt, involving blowing up his personal $70,000 armored vehicle with a pipe bomb. He created an elaborate sting culminating in a televised arrest of the "assassin," who was quickly released when courts saw that he had been entrapped and most of the plot was in fact fabricated by Arpaio.

• Joe brags on TV that he only spends 40 cents a day on each inmate, and it's true; but only because in Arizona when you go to jail you have to pay the government $70 in rent for each day you spend in there. This is in addition to "fees & surcharges," and in addition to any fines or restitution.

  Joe Arpaio's jail does not meet federal standards for accreditation by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. His NCCHC accreditation was revoked, which means that he is operating his jail in violation of state law and health department guidelines. Arizona does not provide a remedy or punishment if and when these laws are broken, so Joe just gets away with it.

Read the whole ****ing thing instead of just what I quoted here. You must be fully aware how horrible Joe Arpaio is.

It is not enough that he is killed. He has many cronies who can simply take over for him. The whole lot of them must be rounded up and driven into the sea.

A couple of links are broken I think, but that's more reason for you to actually look this **** up rather than take what is said here at face value. Seriously, read up.


Also, don't expect the local media to pick up any stories, such as the Arizona Republic, where Arpaio's son-in-law works on the editorial team to make sure potentially harmful stories get buried or discarded altogether.

I read an article in a newspaper which consisted of an interview with Arpaio and some of his cronies, and while it certainly focused on the fact that the man was more of a punisher than a rehabilitator yet still rather popular with those around him, and the fact that he conspired against his opponent or the liberal mayor or something, it did not make any mention of many of the "facts" there.

Also I find it laughable that he speaks of Joe Arpaio's brutality, then in his final paragraph suggests an equally brutal punishment for Monsieur Arpaio.

Also a lot of that stuff links to the Phoenix New Times website which seems rather dubious as a news source, but given what I already did read about Arpaio it doesn't seem all that far-fetched.

I participated in said discussion. Suffice is to say that the man is the embodiment of evil and should be annihilated in the most painful and prolonged way imaginable. That he has supporters is absolutely incomprehensible to me. In no other Western country would this sort of blight on the human race be allowed to stand.

I especially liked the a story I found where some of his supporters threatened a person with arrest if he looked at public documents in the library and continued to do so when every person from the mayor of phoenix down told them to lay off.

The New Times is our equivalent of the Village Voice and is in fact owned by the same company.

But the reality is that most of what is said about Arpaio is, in fact, true.

It's also true that really, very few people in Phoenix actually like the guy. I, for one, think he's abused his power one too many times.

If he has been proved to do this, why not gather his cronies now and not investigate. I know federal law says official stuff has to be done, but honestly, Ben Franklin would most likely say to hell with Arpaio—send him and his cronies to jail or something. See, exceptions are beautiful with this stuff, no?

If I was an acting official who had a say on this, I would not send the FBI to investigate on it, but send the FBI to take him and his workers to federal prison for a long list of crimes (well, after due process).

I say to hell with investigation on this guy.

Hey, I totally agree with you, they should be throwing them in federal prison right now. I'm just glad that they're doing SOMETHING after all of this time.

better yet, throw him in his own jail and let him see exactly how well he could withstand those conditions. My bet is: not well.

One too many times? In a position like his, once should be enough to get canned. He has literally killed people for what is more or less his own perverse amusement, on multiple occasions. He sends people who criticise him to his torture camp, and holds them without charges there. He owns a tank and threatens to run over cars that get in his way. He has violated more laws than all the people he has punished, combined. He is in clear violation of international human rights laws. To put it bluntly, Joe Arpaio is a modern-day tyrant and a disgusting waste of human life; moreover he is a dark example of what can happen when fundamentalist fanatics get their way.

As a psuedo-Christian, I find all of Arpaio's tactics absolutely disgusting on both moral and religious grounds.

No, the problem is people and the mainstream news media worship this guy because he is "TOUGH ON CRIME LOL" and sadly a majority of people who live there think that this kind of crap is awesome and patriotic, or they're just downright stupid enough to buy into the hype machine surrounding him.

At least this ******* isn't the Attorney General of the US.

Still, that ****er should be thrown in a nice 8 by 8 in his own prison, along with a nice 300 pound black man that was thrown in there for being caught with just a bud of marijuana. Speaking of which, he was in a documentary about the "war on drugs" and he wasn't exactly getting a good spotlight either.

Actually various other laws don't say it's alright, but international law has no authority so it's hardly an argument against his wrongdoing. If you want to say what he's doing is morally wrong, do so, but don't try to be sneaky and say you disagree with what he's doing on legal grounds by citing something that isn't technically law.

Perhaps this technically calls for a thread about the true meaning of law and justice then?

According to a pianist that I play with, there's actually a country that recently stated something like this:

"We will not sacrifice our moral integrity for the sake of matching other cultural views. Homosexuals will be killed as is written in our law books."

This link will suffice I hope.

That actually has little relevance to what I was saying. All I was saying was if you disagree on a moral basis, don't try to hide behind law that has no authority and say "look, he's doing something illegal!" when he isn't under that particular law. He has, if the allegations are true, broken a variety of other US laws that do have authority, but I was only nitpicking as to the part that didn't just to try and make it clear to people who keep saying "hurr UN Declaration of Human Rights" from acting like it actually matters.

We don't need to talk about the meaning of laws in order for me to say that. The UN does not have a legislature, the UN only has authority if a country consents to its authority, and authority that you can't exercise without asking permission from the person you want to exercise it against is hardly authority.
