Having Children

This has been plaguing my thoughts for some time now. As the title implies, this thread is about sex and having children. What are your views?

I brought this up, because people always scoff at/condemn my adamant descision never to have children. Simply put, I want to keep the relationship between my girlfriend or wife and myself. No baby, and no pregnancy side-effects. Now you can call me "selfish" (maybe I am) or "immoral" all you want, but my mind is made. I want to keep the flames burning for as long as I can, and a child would ruin that. Aside from sex-related benefits, it will also be much more cost-effective to avoid having children, and I'll not be contributing to over-population. I just want to keep enjoying myself, and that is my right.

there is nothing wrong with not wanting kids. What you do in your relationship is your business.

It's possible to keep the flames burning even after the fact though. It's just a lot harder.

Pffft. I couldn't care less about having kids. They would just slow my life down. So I definately agree with you on this. I actually don't really plan on getting married either.

So yeah, nothing wrong with not wanting children.

I don't see anything wrong with it, it all depends on the couple. Sex can certainly be used purely for pleasure, purely for reproduction, or for both. Whatever works for the both of you is fine by me, it's none of my business after all.

However, you should really be open to considering your girlfriend's/wife's feelings on the matter as well.
Also, on overpopulation: You could certainly still raise children without contributing to the masses, it's called adoption.

I currently have no interest in children, but I wouldn't doubt it could change with time.

I personally am a little on the edge with having children of my own. On one side, I want to be able to raise a kid and watch them have kids when I'm old and wrinkly, and on the other side I'll be able to do more things with my own life during my 30's.

But if I want to have a child, I want it to be natural...with me on some drugs for the pain. I hate the idea of having to have my belly cut open for childbirth.

I totally would love to have a kid of my own. I'd name her Charlotte, rear her on a steady diet of Marx, Lenin, Kropotkin, Goethe and Hugo, then I'd make sure she was a proper atheist and not a servant to the catholic church.

I like to think of raising a child as an opportunity for experimentation. If we are to take Nietzsche's philosophy into consideration, then it is my responsibility to prepare the world for the overman. I think we need one more step.

I like your thinking. Though you have to bear in mind that your child could reject your ideology - for all we know, she could wind up as a born-again Christian. Kids are weird that way. The great thing about the next generation is that they may surpass you, but not always in the way you expect.

I desire to have children. Although I'm a little worried because the girl I currently like wants seven kids and I'm not sure I could handle that.

Discussion: Just the Catholics or do all christians count?

honestly, i always wanted to never have children. but for some reason once i got in my current relationship i had a change of heart. im planning on having 3 children. kids just aren't for some people and i respect your decision not to reproduce

You don't need a baby to keep a relationship going, in my opinion. If you don't want childern then thats your case, man I'm not even sure if I want childern myself. And thats not really being selfish, its just pointing out that you don't want to have any childern and you just want to be in a relationshiop.
And if your girlfriend/wife, or whatever wants childern, then I don't know what to say there then.

I would be happy to raise a child of my own but babies are disgusting.

I am not worried about over-population; the planet can certainly handle more people, and in many developed areas, the birthrate is leveling or declining.

I would let my child decide his or her opinions but television and really bad music will not be around.

Absolutely not!
I don't know why, but I hate young toddlers. (No offense to anyone with young children or siblings.) Not only that, but I'm just too ambitious and focused on my future to worry about children.

I hate 'em too. So annoying they are...

I really don't want children.

Well it would be nice to raise childern, its just the work that involves with it too that you probably don't want to do.
I mean, I have to take care of my niece, and she is a handful, and she is only 2 about to turn 3 really soon.

As long as your spouse agrees with the decision, its perfectly fine to not want kids.

Personally, I plan on having kids when I'm about 30.
