I don't get it.

How can people be so negative about their life? There are so many great things in life. My friends here on ZU, some of my real life friends, and rain.

What I don't get is people who say "Life sucks" just ebcuase one thing goes wrong. Being cheerful can help you forget about everything. So, why not enjoy yourself? I mean, my mother is sometimes a horrid witch, and uses belts on me, but you still see me cheerful, and I'm not gloomy.

I just don't get it.

Re: I don't get it.

Here here.

I have yet to experience anything to suggest to me 'life sucks'.

Sure, sucky things happen within life, but life itself never ceases to be beautiful by its very definition.

Hmm, I thought I was the only person who thought like this. I mean, Life is great and such, and even if stuff doesn't go right, then I just try and fix it and shrug it off.

It's because the "Life Sucks" mentality and being a mall rat are very profitable for others and propaganda is willingly followed.

Life is a great thing, especially in modern times, but many people are irrational.

It's simple - you don't get to choose how you feel. You can control what you say, you can control what you do, and you can even control what you think with practice. But the control a person has over their feelings is limited.

Same same. I don't get it either.

I have thought up the worst tragedies, and still found happiness. I have dreamed the worst tragedies, and still found happiness. I have lived the worst tragedies, and still found happiness.

That's sad that your mother belts you though. I'm sure things will be better in the future.

How did I miss that?

She should - MUST - stop. There's a difference between disciplining a child and beating them black and blue. That's just not done. If I were you, I'd tell her to stop or else she better sleep with one eye open.

Beltings are illegal in most places I know of, and are considered a form of child abuse.

+1

I used to think like this. Granted, I'm still technically a teenager. I'm 19. But I'm more like 20, I'm just born in December.

But anyway, that's irrelevant. The point is, I understand why you think this. I used to be the same way. I had problems when I was younger, the sort that aren't typical of growing up (like what the OP described in their post). However, I was happy. I had my friends, I was in high school, life was good.

Even when I experienced my first bout with grief when I was 16 (it was not the kind of death that just 'happens', no one old or anything like that, so it wasn't a part of growing up), I still found happiness. Although I guess I was considerably jaded afterward.

But now that I'm 3 years in college and things are slipping away, I'm beginning to really realize what depression is. The kind I thought I used to feel. I can't really explain it, I guess it's just something that comes with growing up, and leaving high school is a big thing that causes it.

Perhaps I can't really say that for everyone though, as it's just my personal experience. I have also gone through other things and have less order and direction in my life than most people, so this definitely contributes to it. I have a lot of peers who are generally happier than I am. I do not have the handle on my emotions now that I did in high school though.

I kind of feel like I'm rambling at this point and I really don't want to turn this post into a blog entry lol, which it feels like, so I guess I'll just end it by saying....... life can definitely suck. a LOT. And it will get to you more the older you get, because when you're younger, it's just a lot easier to look on the bright side and ignore the ****. As you get older, it goes from being external hardships to more internal..and that's something you can't ignore.

oh and I'm really jealous of you because goddammit when I was 14 that would be have been me writing that. I want that back. =(

Re: I don't get it.

I was belted as a kid. I didnt think my parents were abusing me, it was discipline.
I also disagree on the No Spanking thing.

Anyway, yeah i dont like the whole "life sucks" thing either. Stuff happens and you live through it. Its how you learn.

This, exactly.

Anyone here ever suffered from clinical depression? Or even felt devastatingly sad? Could you change the way you felt? 'Cause I sure can't.

Clinical Depression (easily the most common cause of a "life sucks" attitude, given how many people suffer from it, many without ever knowing.) doesn't let you just "snap out" of it. It's irrational. It doesn't care if you're the richest and healthiest person on Earth, with the best family, friends, and job that anyone could ever have. It doesn't care that people starve to death in Africa while you have food.

Blaming people for suffering from depression is roughly as logical as blaming them for having malaria.

Yes i did when i was a teen. It took awhile, but it went away. Im not too thrilled about the situation im in now, but im not gonna let it get me down anymore. I feel that there is no point. I guess its different for everybody.

Re: I don't get it.

If you are a white suburban teen in America, and you think life sucks. Shut the **** up.

If you live in the Sudan and your whole family is starving and if any of you screw up you all die, you can say life sucks.

People are such babies these days.

Re: I don't get it.

Depression is a terrible thing. It's as though it puts shades over your eyes that make the world seem dull and cold. It's often not so much a sadness as a deep lethargy, making life and everything in it feel completely meaningless.

It's not rational (it's a mental illness), but it is a reason why people may feel down, even if on the surface there is nothing immediately wrong with their lives.

I wonder how it is physiologically induced.

That's a retarded way to look at things. Sure, it's good to remember that things like that are happening because it does put things into perspective. You should be thankful for at least having the problems that could arise from your lifestyle and location than theirs. There's nothing wrong with that.

But at the same time, everything is relative. A white suburban teen lives in a totally different world than someone in Sudan.

If a person is going through much more than they can handle, that has nothing to do with what is going on on the other side of the world. It's seriously the dumbest thing to think that people shouldn't be upset over legitimate and traumatic problems because of other peoples hardships, when both hardships are totally different and spawned from completely different scenarios.

If someone has a ****ty ass life in the suburbs and goes through things that people don't normally go through in the suburbs, they're not babies.

It's about gaining a little perspective to realize how fortunate you actually are.
