Out of body experiences

Probably been one like this but I didn't find on so....

Out of body experiences. Have you had one? If so, what do you think brought it on. What was it like? What is your explanation for these experiences? Some say mentality, meditations, aliens, ect.

My personal experience(s) happen whenever I start to play my guitar. I'll start free jamming on any random scale and I'll close my eyes and go into something of a meditative state. Sometimes I can actually see myself playing, even with my eyes closed. My actual explanations for this vary. I could just as easily say that it's my own imagination letting me see myself playing as if I'm standing in front of myself looking. But that's not very fun now is it.

Re: Out of body experiences

I put it down to imagination, hallucination et cetera. I wouldn't like to dismiss them completely, though, as I like the idea of the mind extending further then the brain, though it's more of a pet-hope then anything. There's no evidence for it, as far as I know. It's a nice thought, though. Maybe...

Re: Out of body experiences

I'm not going to believe something unless I have proof of it.

My father has been trying to convince me about these "OBE"s and I really don't believe him. :\

It would be nice if there was a nice and fluffy afterlife with clouds and angels and happiness in general, but logically I can't believe that, and I'm not going to lie to myself to make myself feel better. D:

You sir, are no fun . I can understand the thinking logically thing, I've been there. When it comes to these types of things I'm usually pretty cold and technical about it. The difference here is that I've experienced it. It's kind of like a type of high. Not normal drug high, had that, hated it. This is something, as stereotypical light puffy cloud as it is, natural.

I had an out of body experience during sleep paralysis. Does that count?

Technically I suppose. If it was an out of body experience of any kind.

Re: Out of body experiences

I too experience the same things you speak of, when i play my bass. Not so much as OBE's but there certainly have been times when i and other musicians of my level get together, we go into and expression jam, and simply play. Anything.

What happens is the first minute is rather odd, but then incredible emotions and communiucation occurs. It's a fantastic way to bond.

However, i have taken medications... which are incredibly powerfull. The things you see can indeed resemble OBE's, but i put it down to the chemicals in your brain, than anything spiritual.

Re: Out of body experiences

As with Jodd, I had sleep paralysis which felt like I left my body and trying to fight back to control it again. It was one of the scariest moments of my life.

I believe that I had an out-of-body-experience sometime in year 4. I was kicked hard in the stomach by some kid and fell unconscious from being winded. It was a weird sensation than usual because it didn't feel like I was in my body, but I was conscious in a way that told me that I was alive. Kind of like a spirit or ghost. I felt floaty.

But yeah I came back and felt the pain waiting for me. And then I felt so heavy from being back from a floaty sensation.

Re: Out of body experiences

OBEs are phenomena entirely concocted by the mind.
I don't get how people think otherwise.
"But it felt so real!"
Er, YEAH, ya know why?

EDIT: Also, serious discussion?

But some people value faith over logic. You obviously seem like a logical person, and you take things by face value and need proof to believe in something.

But some people have faith in these things. You might think that it's stupid/illogical but it's just a different way of thinking to yours.

I know, it just seems like stupid reasoning to insist it really happened because "you really experienced it" and say stuff like "I know not everyone believes it, but they will when it happens to them", when it's a known fact that your senses and mind constantly lie to you (I'm not spouting any sort of "reality is a lie" stuff, I'm just saying). It's just surprising that nobody thinks their mind could be tricking them.

Thats a very good point, Aldous Huxley the author of brave new world was a user of LSD/acid a very powerful drug which causes you to view the world differently. Whilst mainstream science says that indeed it's the drugs which are affecting how you see the world, he theorised that LSD actually turns filters off the brain. Allowing us to view the world/universe as it actually is, which would normally be too much sensory input for our minds to handle.

While there are many problems with his logic, and the science involved it does raise the question, of whether we are being tricked, or even perceiving reality the way it actually is.

I mean really we can only think that we see the colour yellow, or the musical note G.

Judging by the fact that I've never heard of the term, probably not.
Are those the same kinda deals as what some people refer to as "spirit guides" in dreams? 'Cause I hear that term tossed around a lot, and it too sounds fabricated. I don't doubt that you can meet characters in dreams (or dream-like states, which OBEs count as to me) that act as a guide, but they're still in your head. Especially if you're looking for one specifically-- that raises chances that one will appear (i.e., be created by your mind).

Spirit Guides you say?
Somewhat the same.

I have a long ass story to tell about why I think the Wolf is my Animal Totem.
But I'm not going to, because it would take me forever to type it and then ignorence what eat it up.

By the way.
Animal Totems change throughout life. For Example:
Young days animal totem is an Owl to teach about how to cope with death.
THEN
Older days animal totem is a Wolf to teach perserverance.

By the way again, Tonchiki!
Nice sig.

Either way, I think it's a load of rubbish.

Well normally I would have, but it was out of left field and had nothing to do with the conversation, so I was just confused.

EDIT: Also, regardless of how funny you intended that to be, it didn't exactly come out very nicely.

Re: Out of body experiences

My post might get deleted but I personally don't think it's right to go out of one's body. I think it's true and is possible but I don't think it's right. I do think that going beyond the brain is pretty cool but I rather not play with those types of things... again this is my personal opinion and am going by faith.
