Do you think Atlantis was real?

So everyone, do you?

I always have been open to possibilities, but I still don't know what to think. The Atlantic people were said to have the keys to all wealth and happiness.....do you believe that?

I highly doubt it existed.

I remember reading somewhere that it was proven to be real. It was destroyed in a volcanic eruption. They found very advanced technology such as plumbing there. Something like that.

But it actually did exist.

I doubt that Atlantis was real, but I think there is a possibility that it once existed.

Do I believe that they had a sweet fountain of youth and keys to wealth and happiness? No.

Do I believe it may have existed? Sure, although I don't really think it did. Only reference is Plato afaik and he just made stuff up to illustrate points quite often I believe. Seems like there would be a lot more references to it if it existed.

Many Greek and Roman accounts also point of Minotaurs and Hercules being real. And many parts of the world have sunk into the sea over the years. Those ruins could easily be from a culture we already know of.

Allegedly, Atlantis existed at about 9000 BC, but Plato wrote abo0ut it in about 300 BC. It is unlikely he would have any records from that time to work off, so he likely just made it up.

The Atlantis myth is based, like most myths, in a small grain of fact.

The Greek island of Thera was once home to a highly advanced civilization which apparently disappeared, according to the records of the Egyptians they traded with.

Scientific examination has proven that a massive volcanic eruption consumed what was once the disk-shaped island of Thera, turning it into a crescent and burying the civilization that lived on it.

I think that there was a great city, possibly called Atlantis, that sank into the ocean several centuries ago. There is some truth to every legend.

This is false. There is some truth to every legend, not every legend is completely true.


I hereby question the validity of this thread to be in this forum. The SD forum is for serious discussion. I am not entirely certain that the existence of Atlantis is of a high enough level of seriousness for this forum. If the views of moderators differ, then please disregard this.

The ruins found at Thera really have no apparent resemblance to Plato's accounts of Atlantis. Really, comparing Plato's in detail descriptions to what has been excavated and found to be an average Minoan site shows that in all likelihood, Plato was not describing Crete.

I don't believe Atlantis is a credible myth, for the record.

The Minoans were incredibly advanced, both technologically and socially for the time period. Plus, the destruction of Thera was a major blow to the Minoan economy and ultimately contributed to their collapse. The fall of the Minoan civilization occured around 1200BC, well before Plato wrote Timaeus and Critias in 300 BC, so the Atlantis story could very well have been a metaphorical tale of the fall of the Minoans

This brings to mind a conversation I had with one of the other college students recently involving the Genesis in the Bible. He believed that Atlantis is the name given to the civilization that existed at the time, and it was destroyed when God sent the Flood. Pretty interesting stuff, imo.

Anywho, I'm pretty sure that there was probably a civilization at some point that was destroyed by a flood or tsunami. I highly doubt that it had some of Atlantis' supposed technological wonders or that it occupied an entire continent, but there's always the possibility of a city other than Pompeii getting owned by Mother Nature.

That is interesting. It makes perfect sense. I'm sure the thought has occured to me before, but I never really thought about it before. This is a very good hypothesis. I would have to look into it, but yeah.

Atlantis sunk into the ocean, we would have found it by now.

I don't belive Atlantis is real but there is some truth in it, Many unknown civilisations that have been lost have been rediscovered this century, many of them advanced. But there are also some mysteries, such as the pharaohs have been found to of had tobbacco, only found in this time period, in the amercias.

I think it was real, but it wasn't a perfect futuristic society. It was just another atoll
(volcanic islands that appear and sink).

I think every myth is the truth from someone's point of view.

For years, i studied the Atlantis legends. Yes i do believe that some sort of civilization existed that was the basis for the Atlantis legend.
Many theories say that Atlantis was the Minoans like Tyras pointed out. Some say it was another island not far from the Mediterrainian.(ugh SP) Plato basically states that Atlantis was located west of the Straits of Gibralter. (Ugh SP again) That could basically be anywhere in the Atlantic ocean. Its very ambiguous. Also he stated this: "At the site where it fell, The Gods rendered that area unsearchable and uninhabitable." This is why so many Atlantis theorists (me included) believe it was in the area of the Bermuda Triangle. Also the findings of the Biminy Road feed the claims. Some even theorize Biminy and even Cuba are peices of the once larger island of Atlantis.

All of that is of course up for debate and no one has really found any solid proof. But that doesnt mean the possibility isnt there. Some folks have claimed to have found odd objects in that region. I remember seeing a show about a guy who found an odd orb while diving near Biminy. I wish i could remember the show. The orb was like a crystal and it caused odd magnetic phenomenon. Is it real? *shrug* I have no idea. Just stating something i saw on the subject.

Was Atlantis technologically advanced? I have no idea. It could have been (for the era, in the same respect the Romans were) but who knows.

Is the Atlantis you're talking about full of mermaids and fish people, or was it once a city that over time was taken underwater by raising sea levels? Because when I hear Atlantis, I think of mermaids and such. I really don't know much about the actual theory of one really existing...but if it was something along the lines of an ancient city that wasn't underwater while inhabited, then I think it's perfectly plausible.

Until there is proof of it non-existence, I'm open to any possibilities.
