Why are people so bloodthirsty these days?

Before I begin, let me start by saying that I don't condone rapist, murderers, serial killers, child killers, child molestors and every other scumbags out there that are in jail. I hope they suffer the fulles extent of the law.

But what I've noticed is that whenever I see news on forums about these scumbags, at least half of them are vying graphic torture and mutilation be done on the person in question, and I'm not talking about people that just need to let it out, I'm talking about people who activley DEFEND their opinions with long posts, dissecting their opponet's posts quote by quote. Once upon a time, a few months ago, there was a thread that was called: "Hitler was onto something/Eugentics" on here where the OP stated we should take the prisoners and march them into death camps.

While I have been known to think up of Stalin-like punishments for the scumbags of the world, I worry that those who are posting long posts saying to an extent: "Let's go back to the 15th century where we burnt people first and asked questions later." actually believe in what they say.

Yes, the system of law and punishment may need to be defined and tweaked, we may need to find a system where we get as less amount of corrupted judges as possible, but for the love of all that is holy! We are NOT in the Middle Ages anymore, or the Roman Empire where you'd see the scumbags writhing on crosses on the sides of busy roads. I'd like to believe that we are better than the criminals.

There's a reason they're doing this, whether it's pshycology or whatever, it CAN be fixed. Slaughtering them by the dozens won't work. Rehabilitating may work in the short-run, but what we need to do is get to the core of the problem (like poverty) and see what we can do about it.

Sorry for the long rant.

Bloodthirst is not a new thing-human nature is essentially constant (though one could argue that technology can change the way an individual thinks). The Romans, for example, were an advanced society with a lust for cruel and graphic punishments. So were ancient China and most other civilizations at some point.

In fact, violence has decreased overall, and exposure to violence in movies and games tone down this urge or make people horrified by it (despite the occasional GTA quack).

Maybe here it has to do with the internet? I don't know you. You don't know me. We are free to fume at others and on topics.

Most people who take it too far are usually politically biased (being too conservative or liberal) or dumb. Poverty can only be fixed if the corrupt systems in Africa and Asia are dismantled.

It would seem to rely heavily on perspective really. How 'bloodthirsty' someone is could very easily be seen to be influenced by how they live. Granted there have always been records of violence spiking in different eras so it would seem to fluctuate. As to an actual reason, I have none, but I think it goes beyond just people yearning for it now more than ever.

Link the Zora: Let me ask you this first. Are you in favor of the death penalty?
Captain Ivan: Sadly if we wish to completly eradicate all corrupt governments than we'll need to go to war with them which would cause some people to scream that we're only causing more violence. In the end it seems like true peace can only be attained through war.

Re: Why are people so bloodthirsty these days?

Do you have any idea how much safer and less violent the world is these days? Six hundred years ago, violence and death were everyday facts of life; disease was common, life expectancy was low, and being stabbed by a person passing you in the street was a real possibility. Public executions and torture sessions were not just common, they were community events attended by huge numbers of people for the purposes of entertainment. While I can't say that human bloodlust has diminished at some primal, biological level, socially we are far, far less predisposed to show violence towards each other, and most people these days are unlikely to be violent towards each other even when pushed. Whether this is due to common, easy outlets like videogames, or more to do with improved education, living conditions, etc., I can't say precisely, but I'm sure it's a combination of many factors.

Crime and punishment had little to do with actual justice before the modern era, and more to do with making examples of people to keep the rest in line - Sultans in India had elephants used to crush the heads of criminals, in Europe there were dozens of exotic torture devices available for every particular crime (enjoying your thumbscrew? rack? goat's tongue?), not to mention burning at the stake, a punishment generally reserved for heretics. In early North America, scalping was a common punishment for captured warriors by both settlers and some bands of Natives. There are plenty more examples that don't come to mind right now, but even today, in many parts of the world, there are still barbaric and brutal punishments performed for petty and trivial crimes.
