The first one. Also I refuse to use save states to beat games unless I'm just playing through again for fun. I beat Zelda II with no save states. Honestly, probably the hardest game I've ever beat.

I beat it. :D Though I used the Dark Link, crouch in the corner exploit. I actually liked it. And I think the way you can upgrade by levels is pretty unique. :D
