[Puck] Gregory Hiltman's Training
Assignment 1
Gregory awoke to the sound of an axe chopping away on a tree. It was sporadic, as if the person wielding the axe didn’t really know how to use it. The pauses between chops would at times be lengthy, and sometimes they would be so short that Gregory believed that the wielder didn’t pull the axe all the way back. After about ten minutes of this Gregory decided to get up. He sat up and froze. He was not in his bedroom or in any room in his house. The room was cramped and constructed almost entirely out of wood. It was very plain with no paint, no carpeting, and not even a bed stand. There was a tiny fireplace a few feet from the foot of the bed with a rocking chair seated in front of it. It appeared that the fireplace had been lit but burned out a few hours ago. The only source of light was a curtain less window to the right of the bed.
“What the hell?” was all Gregory was able to utter. He was utterly stunned at the complete change of surroundings. He sat motionless in the bed for a full minute until three rapid chops from the axe wielder outside shook him from his stupor. Slowly he rose and headed for the door on the left side of the bed. The door led to a long narrow hall also constructed purely out of wood. Here the only lighting came from dim candles on a chandelier that hung just a few feet above Gregory’s head. Gregory treaded carefully to the door on the other end. He was in uncharted territory, and definitely out of his comfort zone. He reached the second door and pulled it open. This one gave way with a loud creak.
Outside was much brighter, and it took a moment for Gregory’s eyes to adjust. When they did he beheld the strangest of sights. There were thousands of small houses; some where built of wood like the one he awoke in, others were built out of metal, and a small minority of them was made of a material that reminded Gregory of Jell-O. Beyond these houses was a cube shaped structure the size of a large city. The cube expanded and contracted like a heart and the very materials the made up the massive structure seemed to change. Parts of it would be made of aluminum then suddenly transform into glass. Gregory stood completely still, gaping at what he saw.
“I must still be dreaming,” he thought to himself. Finally after a few minutes he pulled himself together and decided to walk toward the giant cube. As he walked he noticed that people had begun emerging from their houses, their expressions ranged from mildly confused to completely terrified or enraged. Even these people seemed bizarre to Gregory. Some of them looked as if they had just stepped out of a time machine, while others seemed so strange that Gregory concluded that they couldn’t have come from this dimension. Eventually Gregory reached the cube. Up close he noticed a green liquid seemed to flow through what appeared to be giant arteries. Suddenly a square hole opened in the side of the cube.
“In here,” came a voice from the other side.
