Vivace Dionne

Name: Vivace Altair Madrigal-Dionne (following the naming conventions of her culture), or more simply Vivace Dionne.

Nicknames/Aliases: "Viv", "Boss", and other, less savory ones

Age: Deceased. She was the eldest Madrigal sister, older than Algretta by one year.

Sex: Female

Race: Human, of mixed Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and South American origin. Slight hint of Romani, despite her gypsy roots being more akin to the Iberian Kale/Andalusian gypsies of our world. Possessed magic, believed to spring forth from the soul, and run in her blood. More specifically, she was considered a "mage”, somewhere between a “sorcerer” and an "enchanter" in distinction, closer to the latter (explained in terms of her world here just scroll down to the section for “mages".)

Height: 5'7"

Weight: 128 pounds

Eye Color: A bewitching, intensely warm hazel.

Hair Color/Style: Raven black, coiling in tight curls, down past her shoulders. She often wore a red rose pinned in her hair.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, healthy olive skin with a warm tone, that tended towards a deep caramel or bronze color.

-More pictures of my characters, including Vivace, on my DA account-

General Appearance: Vivace had a more angular face than many of her sisters, striking in its exotic beauty. Her cheekbones were more pronounced, and her chin angular to nearly a rounded point, with a pert, small nose, and devious, commanding almond-shaped eyes. Her eyebrows were arched and dark, her eyelashes were long and black, and she often wore a vibrant shade of red lipstick on her lips.

She was taller than her other sisters, with a presence that demanded the attention of all in the room. She often wore red and black, preferring dresses to other attire, and favored heels or boots in matching shades. She had an hourglass frame and toned limbs, boasting limber strength. Her sharp smiles became more and more unsettling, cunning, and malicious as the years went by. She was rarely seen without a weapon by her side or in hand.

Theme Songs:
Known Family:
Anton Lorenzo Dionne – husband (deceased)
Alessandra “Alex” Zaniah Dionne (Vossler) – daughter
Fabricia “Fabi” Muscida Dionne (Leos) – daughter

Galliard Vinicius Madrigal – father
Sonya Deneb Navarre-Madrigal – mother (deceased)

Algretta Gatria Madrigal – fourth youngest sister
Luminari Maia Madrigal – third youngest sister
Arietta Mira Madrigal – second youngest sister

Cadenza Vega Madrigal – youngest sister
Paris Santiago Valentia – former brother-in-law (only legally deceased)
Katherine “Kate” Anne Madrigal – niece
Rain Seraph – former brother-in-law
Two new nieces or nephews on the way, yet to be born or named

Clara Madrigal-Souza – paternal aunt, Galliard’s younger sister
Domenico Souza – paternal, younger cousin, Clara’s son
Aline Navarre-Ramirez – maternal, younger cousin

Homeplace: Santa Mariela, Rubato, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Buried: at Citta, Cernilia, South Cordelia, Earth

Occupation: In life, she was the crime lord of the Madrigal-Dionne mafia that controlled much of the underground in Rubato and Cernilia.

Weapons: She favored a whip, but also used guns and knives with lethal precision.

Powers/Magic/Skills: She wielded fire magic.

Personality: Controlling, domineering, fierce, cunning, and clever. A bit sadistic. Intelligent and quick-witted, she could be horribly cruel. She ran her criminal empire alongside her husband with an iron fist, not even sparing family much of the time. Some say she had become more and more twisted and distant from the girl she had been growing up as the years passed. She only seemed loyal to herself and her husband Anton. One would cross her at the risk of their own life—or even worse, her torturing them until they begged her to end their life. She had a fierce grudge against her father for trying to keep her from Anton and her criminal ambitions. Her sisters were all tools and weapons, to a degree. Algretta could sometimes counteract her fiery nature. She hid many things behind lies and engineered falsehoods and fronts.

History: See Cadenza’s history for much of it. She was killed at age 35, leaving behind two abandoned twin daughters, Alessandra and Fabricia Dionne.

Arietta Madrigal

Name: Arietta Mira Madrigal

Nicknames/Aliases: "Ari" for short by her family

Age: 31

Sex: Female

Race: Human, of mixed Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and South American origin. Slight hint of Romani, despite her gypsy roots being more akin to the Iberian Kale/Andalusian gypsies of our world. Possesses magic, believed to spring forth from the soul, and run in her blood. More specifically, she is considered to be a “mage” who is somewhere between a “magician” and a “sorcerer” in skill, but has never been evaluated in any way by someone with more experience (explained in terms of her world here, just scroll down to the section for "mages".)

Height: 5'5"

Weight: 122 pounds

Eye Color: A bright, friendly, lighter shade of green.

Hair Color/Style: Black, tending a little more towards a dark coal shade, with soft waves down to about her shoulders, or a little shorter. She tends to wear it in a high ponytail, with messy, side-swept bangs.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, healthy olive skin with a warm tone, that tends towards a deep caramel or bronze color, and is blemish free. She has a small beauty mark on her right cheek, near her lips.

-More pictures of my characters, including Arietta, on my DA account-

General Appearance: Arietta is sometimes considered the “ugly duckling” of the Madrigal sisters, although while maybe not picture-perfect beautiful, she is undoubtedly attractive. Her chin is a bit more square than her other sisters, but her jawline is still feminine and compliments her features. Her eyes are full of charm and greatly expressive, and she wears a kind smile very well. She has a slightly larger nose but her creamy olive skin and large eyes balance it well. She often likes to wear red lipstick and a light dusting of green eyeshadow, along with some mascara.

She is slender, but with wider hips, and a somewhat larger than average bosom. Dance and housework have kept her in good shape, and she also likes to take long walks. Her feet are a bit on the larger side for an otherwise more petite woman of her height. Police once would try to match up her prints to any larger ones they found at a known spot of the Madrigals in the past.

She favors sleeveless tops and capri pants or skirts with sandals, but enjoys dressing in summery fashion in general, and in dressing for different occasions. She can be a bit clumsy in taller heels. Occasionally she will wear a little too much jewelry, but as a gypsy she can usually pull off the look.

Theme Songs:
Known Family:
Zachary Leos – fiancé
Fabricia “Fabi” Muscida Dionne (Leos) – adoptive daughter, biological niece

Galliard Vinicius Madrigal – father
Sonya Deneb Navarre-Madrigal – mother (deceased)

Vivace Altair Madrigal-Dionne – eldest sister (deceased)
Anton Lorenzo Dionne – brother-in-law (deceased)
Alessandra “Alex” Zaniah Dionne (Vossler) - niece

Algretta Gatria Madrigal – second oldest sister
Luminari Maia Madrigal – third oldest sister

Cadenza Vega Madrigal – youngest sister
Paris Santiago Valentia – former brother-in-law (only legally deceased)
Katherine “Kate” Anne Madrigal – niece
Rain Seraph – former brother-in-law
Two new nieces or nephews on the way, yet to be born or named

Clara Madrigal-Souza – paternal aunt, Galliard’s younger sister
Domenico Souza – paternal, younger cousin, Clara’s son
Aline Navarre-Ramirez – maternal, older cousin

Homeplace: Santa Mariela, Rubato, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Current Residence: The old family home of the Madrigals, which Galliard and Sonya purchased as not much more than a shack in Santa Mariela when they were first married, and which Galliard added on to bit by bit as he earned more money over the years, until it had become a comfortable two-story house with a small basement. It is a patchwork of materials, but in more recent years has been solidified and stabilized some more, and updated with better appliances, etc. It has a small garage. Galliard’s workshop is in the basement.

Rumors say that the house still is booby-trapped against intruders—especially the front porch—and that a wrong step could cost a thief dearly. Others speculate that Galliard must have deactivated most, if not all, of the traps since Arietta and Zach adopted Fabricia, so as to prevent any harm coming to the unsuspecting girl. Magical wards are also said to be around the home.

Occupation: Formerly in charge of the home and monetary dealings of the Madrigal mafia, she is now a mother and homemaker who does some cooking and washing for neighbors on the side for payment.

Weapons/Armor: A collection of steel knives and daggers, but she does not use them these days and keeps them put well away from Fabricia and the others in the house. Some gauntlets she once used mainly for protection for her hands and arms are still kept in her closet

Powers/Magic/Skills: Arietta specializes in wind magic, but is the weakest magically of all her sisters. She is skilled at crafting gypsy charms and making herbal remedies and brews (explained more in Cadenza’s profile under skills.)

Staccato Burst Wind- Hurls short, intensified bursts of pure wind magic at an enemy.

Harmony- After chanting a spell (usually taking from 2-3 minutes), Arietta may call upon a spell from one of her other sisters. Strength of spell depends on proximity of other sisters.

Song of the Madrigal- A lyrical song written in Old Rubatoian for Cadenza and her four sisters by their mother Sonya, the song of the Madrigal is a chant that allows one sister in a desperate situation to bind the magic of another sister, or send her own power to that sister, whichever she chooses. Each sister has another that is their contrast, and is the one they have the power to bind; for Vivace with her fire, there is Algretta with water; for Luminari with light, there is Cadenza with shadow. Arietta with wind is their mother's contrast, for earth, and serves as a balance; when she sings the spell, whatever the other sisters may have changed is returned to normal, and powers are restored.

The spell has only been used once so far, by Cadenza, in Let's Start Anew, when she sang it to bind her sister Luminari's powers in order to purge the Spirit of Light from her. Arietta has yet to reveal her part in the song.

It is unknown what might have happened had all five sisters ever sung the song together, but with Vivace's death, it will never be learned.

Personality: Sweet and spirited, Arietta is a lively and caring woman with a good head for numbers and money, and many other practical things. While she sometimes can come off as ditzy because of her good cheer and quickness to laughter or giggling, she is a great source of wisdom on the behavior of people and other social matters, and a very loving and mature figure in her household. After adopting Fabi, she took naturally to motherhood, as she had already had years of practice looking after her younger sister Cadenza when they were small, or taking care of their mother in her long illness.

With Zach, she cherishes that he is not like many of the other men in Rubato she has met or dated—he is more naïve in a way, not just looking for one thing, and although he can screw up more than most would like, his heart is always in the right place. He genuinely cares for her and loves her and she would prefer that to all the smooth-talking casanovas in the cities.

Like her other sisters, she loves music and dance. She’s very talented with sewing and making things and occasionally will sell her work to others, but mostly she enjoys making things for her daughter and for their home. She's a great cook. Overall, Arietta has taken well to life after the mafia. It settles better with her kind heart. She is a bit of a worrier, and perhaps the most emotional of the sisters, but is often found to be one of the best people you could trust.

History: See Cadenza’s history for much of it. After Vivace’s death, Arietta’s life settled down considerably. Her focus, which had always been on her family, shifted toward the future, towards wanting to build a family and a home for herself. When she met Zachary Leos, through her younger sister Cadenza, and later adopted her niece Fabricia, she felt happier than she had in many years—so much closer to her dream of a family. Her mother Sonya’s death possibly hit her the hardest out of all the remaining sisters. They had been very close, and Arietta had been her most steadfast caretaker throughout the woman’s long battle with lung cancer. It’s generally thought that Ari will be the one who inherits the Madrigal house someday.

She now lives with her older sisters Algretta and Luminari, her new fiance Zach, and her adopted daughter Fabricia at the Madrigal family home. Her father Galliard normally lives and works at the house as well, but he is currently staying with her younger sister Cadenza in order to help the woman through her pregnancy and with her daughter Kate after she and her husband Rain divorced.

Galliard Madrigal

Name: Galliard Vinicius Madrigal

Age: 58

Sex: Male

Race: Human, of mixed Italian, Portuguese, and South American origin. There is some intermixed Italian Romani in his family, further back in their family line. (He possesses no apparent magical ability, explained a bit more in the terms of his world here. Just scroll down to the section for "humans".)

Height: 5'10" or 5'10 ½"

Weight: 170 pounds, much of it muscle.

Eye Color: An intelligent, kind-looking blue-green. It hints at some magic further back in his family lines, even if he did not inherit the powers himself.

Hair Color/Style: Black, tending towards more blue-black, and cut in a shaggy, relaxed, but neat style that flatters his square jaw and high cheekbones. Some bangs fall over his forehead, ending before his eyes. His hair is straight and kept clean.

He has a short black beard and a moustache, not too large or thick, but enough to emphasize his smiles, along with a layer of light stubble he often tries to keep neat. He also has sideburns that he also tries to trim and keep tidy.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, healthy olive skin with a warm tone, that tends towards a deep caramel or bronze color. His hands are a little callused and rough from his work building and inventing.

-More pictures of my characters, including Galliard, on my DA account-

General Appearance: Galliard is a handsome man who looks quite young for his age, still retaining the good looks, full hair, broad shoulders, and fit build of his younger days. He has a square jaw, strong chin, and high cheekbones, along with expressive, intelligent eyes that seem suited to sympathy and geniality. His smile is bright, and only enhanced by the darkness of the trim, short beard that frames it. His brows are dark and add to the rugged character of his face, along with his sideburns and stubble. He has a very fatherly and strong look about him.

His hands are a workman’s hands. He has a strong chest, arms, and legs, with muscles earned from years of hard labor rather than hours put in at the gym.

Cadenza looked to have his smile, however rare hers could be at times, and a hint of his eyes and cheekbones perhaps a bit too. Algretta has his eyes and cheekbones too, along with his straight hair. The other girls also have a mix of his features.

Theme Songs:
Known Family:
Sonya Deneb Navarre-Madrigal – wife (deceased)

Hernando Madrigal – father (deceased)
Dolores Fonseca-Madrigal – mother (deceased)
Miguel Madrigal – older brother (deceased)
Clara Madrigal-Souza – younger sister
Domenico Souza – nephew, Clara’s son

Vivace Altair Madrigal-Dionne – eldest daughter (deceased)
Anton Lorenzo Dionne – son-in-law (deceased)
Alessandra “Alex” Zaniah Dionne (Vossler) – granddaughter
Fabricia “Fabi” Muscida Dionne (Leos) – granddaughter

Algretta Gatria Madrigal – fourth youngest daughter
Luminari Maia Madrigal – third youngest daughter
Arietta Mira Madrigal – second youngest daughter

Cadenza Vega Madrigal – youngest daughter
Paris Santiago Valentia – former son-in-law (only legally deceased)
Katherine “Kate” Anne Madrigal – granddaughter
Rain Seraph – former son-in-law
Two new grandchildren on the way, yet to be born or named

Homeplace: Santa Mariela, Rubato, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Current Residence: The old family home of the Madrigals, which he and his wife Sonya purchased as not much more than a shack in Santa Mariela when they were first married, and which he added on to bit by bit as he earned more money over the years, until it had become a comfortable two-story house with a small basement. It is a patchwork of materials, but in more recent years has been solidified and stabilized some more, and updated with better appliances, etc. It has a small garage. His workshop is in the basement.

Rumors say that the house still is booby-trapped against intruders—especially the front porch—and that a wrong step could cost a thief dearly. Others speculate that he must have deactivated most, if not all, of the traps since Arietta and Zach adopted Fabricia, so as to prevent any harm coming to the unsuspecting girl. Magical wards are also said to be around the home.

More recently, he has taken up temporary residence at his daughter Cadenza’s house, in order to help her after her divorce from Rain Seraph and with her new pregnancy, as well as with her young daughter Kate.

Occupation: A freelance engineer, metalsmith, carpenter, and inventor, Galliard has been rebuilding his business ever since he spent 13 years unjustly imprisoned on the Isla do Noir. Now that his name has been cleared, he has steadily been regaining his business contacts and partnerships, as well as establishing new contracts with the government, military, and other groups to invent and work on machinery and technology for them.

In his spare time, he enjoys inventing new toys for his grandchildren to play with. He holds himself to a high degree of quality and safety in all his works.

Weapons/Armor: None, but he seems to know how to handle a revolver and a knife when necessary to protect his loved ones.

Powers/Magic/Skills: Galliard possesses no magical skills, although there is magic in his bloodline from his father’s side. The Madrigals can trace their roots back to the Venezia gypsy tribe of Gardenia. His younger sister, Clara, is a water mage. Galliard himself is very adept with technology and machinery, and has a great intellect. His mother Dolores would often assert that this was a kind of power of its own.

Personality: Even-tempered and centered on family, Galliard is a kind and patient man, with great intelligence and ingenuity, and a sense of humor that has helped him persevere through many of the challenges life has thrown at him. He has seldom ever been seen breaking down—he appears to be able to take nearly anything thrown at him with a smile, a joke, or calm and rational thought. He is a man who comforts others and solves problems, and takes action, whether it’s through mental or physical means. He is a bastion of support to his family, and even after his wife’s death, he does his best to remain close to his daughters.

Under this warmth and kindness, there is also sadness in him. From a young age, he had to cope with the loss of his father and his older brother in war against Cernilia. From then on, he became the man of the house and had to support his mother. When he lost her, it seemed certain the young man could not make it as well. But there is a strong core in Galliard that seems to keep him striving for better, and looking for the brighter side of things. Many years of life have taught him that one lives better when one looks for the light at the end of each dark tunnel.

When his wife Sonya died, he felt as if a large part of him had died along with her. But he remains outgoing, and forward-thinking, and present for his family. He takes pride in his work and even greater pride in his daughters and grandchildren. He is always glad to provide fatherly advice or a shoulder to cry on when needed, his words often full of wisdom and compassion. He does allow himself to look back on sadder times, or on memories, understanding that even the low points of part of life. He believes they are part of what builds our character. Christian faith guides his beliefs and helps him look forward to another day. He holds great respect for his wife’s gypsy beliefs and culture and encourages his daughters to each choose their own faith or lifestyle, rather than pushing his own upon them.

History: See Cadenza’s history for much of it. Before Galliard was ever her father, however, he was a young boy in Rubato during the time of the first Cernilian-Rubatoian war, when the countries were fighting over their split. His father Hernando, and later on, his older brother Miguel, enlisted in the Rubatoian army and perished in this conflict. This left his mother Dolores to raise young Galliard and his little sister Clara. The three scraped out a tough, modest life in Santa Mariela and got by day by day.

As young Galliard grew, he began to show an aptitude for working with his hands and with machines. He would take apart things around the house to understand how they worked, and then reassemble them, sometimes in even better order than they originally had. Dolores recognized this talent in him and encouraged it. He soon began earning money by fixing and building things for their neighbors. Once he finished his schooling, as far as the family could afford, he was approached by some inventors for apprenticeships in their workshops. He worked with a few for some years, but when he was a young man, nearing his twenties, he got the offer of a lifetime—a chance to work with a renowned inventor and engineer in Catalunia, Castile. Collecting up all the savings he could spare, he left his mother Dolores and sister Clara with high hopes and yet a heavy heart. After helping to take care of them for so long, he found himself feeling guilty at the thought of leaving them, and hoped they would still be well when he returned.

In Catalunia, Galliard was in awe. The Airopan city was beautiful and metropolitan, and there seemed to be no end of opportunities for an up-and-coming young inventor. He became involved in projects with the Navy, and in fields such as photography, computing machines, and more. In the evenings, he and the other apprentices, whom soon became his closest friends, would go out and mingle with the local youth scene. There were a few tribes of gypsies in the city, descendants of the survivors of the Gypsy Purge centuries ago, and many of their young women were among those at the parties and clubs the apprentices went to on their nights off. At one of these outings, young Galliard met a beautiful gypsy girl of the Navarre tribe named Sonya, who was performing a dance with her tribe sisters. She was around his age and took an instant liking to the young man. They agreed to see one another again the next day, and soon, a relationship budded.

The two were engaged before it was time to return to Rubato, and Sonya, after much debate with her tribe, decided to come along with Galliard on his trip home. They were married in Santa Mariela, Rubato, in a service before his friends and family, Christians, and gypsies. Finding such a large community of other gypsies in Rubato made the Castilian immigrant, Sonya, feel far more at home than she ever expected. Rubato had a much larger population of her people than Castile ever had since the Purge. It had been the home of the gypsies for generations by then. She encouraged some of her own family to move there in the years to follow, and was pleased to have her cousins and those others that were able to move near by as time went on.

By their early twenties, Galliard and Sonya were welcoming their first daughters, first Vivace, and then Algretta a year later. They were hit afterward by the tragedy of his mother Dolores’ suicide, an event her son continued to mourn into the present day. Each day on the anniversary, it was said by some of his closest friends that he would go into a dark, sad period for the entire day, reflecting and paying his respects to his late mother’s struggle. But life had to go on. Galliard purchased the home in Santa Mariela and began to seek even more work so that he could improve their lives. Sonya chipped in as a midwife, apprenticing herself to Mage Carla della Fonce of Allegre, and also worked as a fortune-teller, music and dance tutor, and a washerwoman sometimes when times were tougher. They scraped by, but were able to raise their brood of five girls, even when they finally welcomed their youngest baby Cadenza to the family. Sonya instructed the girls in household skills, as well as music, dance, astronomy, and other gypsy traditions. Galliard tutored the girls in school subjects whenever he could, and paid for their education. Both parents worked, seemingly without end, to provide for their girls.

All went well, by most accounts, until Vivace grew into her teenage years and met her boyfriend, Anton Dionne of Cernilia. From then on, things only seemed to spiral out of the couple’s control. While Galliard fought with his daughter Vivace to keep her away from the young man’s criminal influence, his wife Sonya fell into addiction to nicotine and later became ill. Their lives continued to darken until the point where Vivace finally had her father framed for the hiring of a hitman to kill his business rival. Galliard was taken from his wife and children and sent to jail, and later the federal prison. It became widely believed that Vivace—or perhaps the criminal contacts she had by this time—had to have the police or someone in the legal system in their pockets for such a fraudulent case to progress so far.

He was not freed until thirteen years later, when his youngest daughter Cadenza worked out a deal with the King of Rubato to clear his name. By then, so much had changed in his family’s lives that Galliard knew nothing could ever be the same. He had lost too much time.

Now free, Galliard keeps up with many of his friends and family whenever he can, valuing his time with them even greater than before. One of his closest and oldest friends is the eccentric metalsmith, Omar Vargas.

Algretta Madrigal

Name: Algretta Gatria Madrigal

Nicknames/Aliases: "Gretta" by most, "The Dragon" from Zachary Leos

Age: 35

More specifically, she is considered to be a “mage” who is roughly of a scholarly “wizard” distinction, but has never been officially evaluated by someone with more experience (explained in terms of her world here, just scroll down to the section for "mages".)

Height: 5'6"

Weight: 130 pounds

Eye Color: A dark, cerulean blue, hidden behind glasses.

Hair Color/Style: Raven black, long, and straight. She mostly wears it tied up in a neat braid that falls to her mid-back, with equally neat, straight bangs that cover most of her forehead.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, olive, smooth skin with a warm tone, that tends towards a deep caramel or bronze color. It is blemish-free. She’s slightly less tanned than her sisters, from spending many hours in her lab.

-More pictures of my characters, including Algretta, on my DA account-

General Appearance: Algretta is the only one of the Madrigal sisters to wear glasses. She prefers to wear a thin, navy blue rimmed pair, with lenses that function like transitional lenses. Her eyes are cool and calculating, and hint at a precise, scientific and mathematical intelligence. She has the high cheekbones of her father and some of her other sisters, and her father’s eyes. Her face is a little more rounded than Cadenza’s heart-shape or Vivace’s more angular features, but her chin is still neat and her jaw thin. Her nose is a straight, mostly Greek shape, slightly turned up like Cadenza’s and Arietta’s. Her lips are of a reddish, almost wine-kissed color. She occasionally wears a bit of lipstick.

Her body is curvy like many of her sisters, but more elegant, given a graceful quality by her slightly greater height. Her legs are longer than her torso and her shoulders are well-proportioned to her hips. She has some toned muscles in her legs and arms from working with tools, but most of her figure is soft, elegant lines. She walks with her chin held high and her back straight. A smile is rare on her face.

Algretta prefers practical but feminine clothing, often favoring modest blouses and trousers in classic cuts, and in shades of blue, black, and gray. She occasionally wears a little blue eyeshadow to accent her eyes. On her feet, she’s most often seen wearing comfortable black flats or ballet-style slippers that hug to her arch and are lightweight and cool for Rubato’s hot, arid weather.

On her ears, she often wears a pair of fish-shaped, platinum earrings, stained a translucent blue. They were crafted by her mother and serve as protective charms that can also help her to channel her water magic more effectively. Algretta is rarely seen without them.

Occupation: Inventor and junior researcher for various contractors and agencies in the country. Her lack of a diploma or degree prevents her from rising as high as she undeniably could otherwise. She is also a part-time night student at a small local school, but has much higher goals. Ultimately, she wants to pursue a doctorate in physics.

Weapons: A metallic staff, with blue steel rings at the base of a pentagonal head, used to focus and strengthen her magic. She is also trained to shoot various guns and wield daggers.

Powers/Magic/Skills: Algretta specializes in water magic, but her true skills reside in the handling of machinery and other technology.

Staccato Burst Water- Hurls short, intensified bursts of pure water magic at an enemy.

Harmony- After chanting a spell (usually taking from 2-3 minutes), Algretta may call upon a spell from one of her other sisters.

Algretta has yet to reveal her part in the song.

It is unknown what might have happened had all five sisters ever sung the song together, but with Vivace's death, it will never be learned.

Personality: Often cold and calculating, Algretta can give off the impression that she is totally without much emotion, and operates totally on logic. But underneath this cool exterior, there is undeniably a heart, albeit cool and reserved, that can feel emotion very strongly. She can hold grudges for a long time and never forgets a wrongdoing done against her or those few she cares for. She is a very bad enemy to have. Her ingenious and inventive mind makes her very good with technology.

Those that know her better also know she has a great ambition and passion for research and academia. Her dream is to be able to continue and complete her schooling and go into the field of physics.

History: See Cadenza’s history for much of it. When her father Galliard was unable to pay for her to go to Blancwood Academy or beyond in her studies, but earned enough years later for her youngest sister to go, it left a bitter taste in her mouth towards him that still isn’t quite resolved. Algretta was often seen as the balance to Vivace’s fiery, domineering nature, and it’s unsure how much she still stays in contact with that world after her sister’s death.

She currently is attending night classes in various scientific and technological-based subjects, and paying for them with her own work and related odd jobs. Out of all the sisters, she seems to be one of the closest to her father’s eccentric metalsmith friend, Omar Vargas. They can often relate to one another about mechanical or technical topics.

Luminari Madrigal

Name: Luminari Maia Madrigal

Nicknames/Aliases: “Nari” or “Lu” by some family members.

Age: 32

More specifically, she is considered a "Healer" and light “mage”, somewhere between a “sorcerer” and an "enchanter" in distinction (explained in terms of her world here, just scroll down to the sections for “mages” and "Healers".) She has only recently (in the past year) become more aware of her status as a Healer and what that entails, but other people have suspected she possessed such gifts much throughout most of her life. Her restorative powers have acted in subtle ways subconsciously even before she learned of her distinction, affecting her environment and those around her, as well as herself.

Height: 5'4"

Weight: 119 pounds

Eye Color: Deep green, like the hue of jungle foliage or a vibrant emerald.

Hair Color/Style: Brown-black and shoulder-length, and falling in soft waves, with shorter layers that frame her face. She often likes to wear it held back by a nice headband, preferring feminine styles like ones with pink, gold, or pearl embellishments.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, olive skin with a warm tone, that tends towards a deep caramel or bronze color. It is very soft and smooth and blemish-free.

General Appearance: Of all the sisters, Luminari takes the most after their mother Sonya, with her calm eyes, oval-shaped face, and gentle features. Her eyes are wide and dreamy, almost sleepy looking in appearance, sometimes looking apathetic to all their surroundings. Her lips are a bit thinner than her other sisters’ are, but of a rosy pink color, and soft. One gets the impression that they would make for very pretty smiles, if she would ever smile. Her nose is small and neat and straight, and her chin and jaw thin and feminine. She overall has a very placid appearance, save for the deep, green darkness of her eyes.

Her figure is petite, as she stands the shortest of all her sisters. She is slender and of a airy sort of build, but not without feminine curves, especially in her hips. She is perhaps the least toned or muscled of all her sisters, but she has very gentle, soothing hands, fitting for a healer.

Luminari often prefers to wear dresses and skirts rather than trousers, and will pair them with ladylike cardigans, jackets, or blouses. She favors spring and pastel colors like pinks, lavenders, creams, and yellows. She often accessorizes with pearls or other delicate jewelry, and wears flats or well-made sandals on her feet.

Others speculate that Galliard must have deactivated most, if not all, of the traps since Arietta and Zach adopted Fabricia, so as to prevent any harm coming to the unsuspecting girl. Magical wards are also said to be around the home.

Occupation: Formerly Vivace’s second-in-command in the family, she now helps out at a local clinic occasionally or tutors music. She does not seem to put her heart into much, unless it is to teach or care for Fabricia, her niece who lives with her in the family’s home.

Weapons: No specific ones after her sword was taken from her by Cadenza for safekeeping and then for use in the gunblade Omar crafted. She is trained to use daggers and guns, and seems to also like using poisons and herbs offensively.

Powers/Magic/Skills: Luminari specializes in light magic and is coming more and more into her own with healing magic as the years go on. She is not yet aware of all her special abilities as bona fide Healer, however, and therefore only exudes her aura of restorative energy subconsciously, where it cannot applied in a more focused, direct manner to another person.

Staccato Burst Light- Hurls short, intensified bursts of pure light magic at an enemy.

Harmony- After chanting a spell (usually taking from 2-3 minutes), Luminari may call upon a spell from one of her other sisters. Strength of spell depends on proximity of other sisters.

Purify- When successful, heals most non-lethal wounds and soothes some illnesses. Amount of energy consumed depends on severity of wound. Spell takes 5-10 minutes to complete, depending on the level of healing energy needed.

Luminari is identified in the song as "the light; the tempo; the one who gives energy to the song."

It is unknown what might have happened had all five sisters ever sung the song together, but with Vivace's death, it will never be learned.

Personality: Almost perpetually calm and seemingly uncaring, Luminari is a very misunderstood and damaged individual. She speaks few words around most people, and seems to live in her own world, her expressions rarely giving any hint as to her thoughts. Her face is often seen blank or simply thoughtful, and she does not move or speak suddenly much of the time. When she does, she seems gentle and stoic, and moves with great grace and poise. The grace comes naturally to her, as if an intrinsic value rather than something she practices. She appears to care deeply for her family, especially her nieces, but typically does not show this in overt ways.

In many ways, Luminari is a mystery to even those she has known the longest. She took a great hit emotionally when her eldest sister, Vivace, died. Some have said she looked up to her and was drawn to her confidence and power—and a very few others think that perhaps the Healer in her wished to help restore Vivace to normalcy instead, and rescue her from her inner demons.

History: See Cadenza’s history for much of it. Luminari was born during a time where Sonya’s smoking addiction was perhaps at its worst, and it seems to show. While developmentally healthy and normal, there seems to be a disconnect with the woman’s personality that leaves her seeming rather apathetic and detached to all things around her. Some have speculated on various reasons for this demeanor, and a few sources have cited that perhaps the nature of her powers as a contributing cause. Her powers may even be the reason she was born healthy, and that her sisters afterward were born healthy as well, as their mother took a long break away from her struggle with addiction after Luminari’s possible influence.

Although she is not yet aware, Healers are often rather subdued in nature, and must be in order to keep their powers in balance. Because Luminari has lived for so long in a poor community, or involved in crime, away from proper magical instruction, she has yet to learn her true nature or her potential. Only in recent years has her restorative effect been noticed by a few more magically-sensitive people, including her sisters, who have each been learning more about their own magic as time goes on. Cadenza’s connections to the Spirits and the International Council of Mages, and particularly Royal Mage Carla della Fonce, may bring more to light. But until then, Luminari is often seen as a strange, unnerving woman whom one can never quite understand or predict. Even so, she has taken a liking to her niece Fabricia after the girl came to live with them at the family home, and seems to care for her and her sister Alex a great deal.

Sonya Madrigal

Name: Sonya Deneb Navarre-Madrigal (following the naming conventions of her culture), or more simply Sonya Madrigal.

Age: Deceased

Sex: Female

Race: Human, of mixed Spanish and Portuguese origin. Some hint of Romani, despite her gypsy roots being more akin to the Andalusian gypsies of our world. Possessed magic, believed to spring forth from the soul, and run in her blood. More specifically, she was considered a "mage" of an "enchanter" distinction (explained in terms of her world here, just scroll down to the section for "mages".)

Height: 5'6"

Weight: 120 pounds

Eye Color: A kind, earthy hazel, with wisdom behind it even when she was young.

Hair Color/Style: Raven black and straight, which she often would tie back in a traditional, long braid that reached to her waist, with long layers that framed her face in a middle-part. Charms and ornaments of the Navarre tribe (suns, stars, and moons prominent among them) were usually woven into her hair.

After a certain age, she began to wear the bun-shaped ornaments given to a woman of status and respect in the gypsy community over her ears. These adornments were thought to help focus a gypsy’s ears on the voices of the Spirits and even the gods. They also could help one focus within when casting spells. She wore hers with hand-carved beads from her mother dangling from one side. The two were attached by a web-like headband made from lace or thin bronze wire.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, formerly healthy olive skin with a warm tone, that tended towards a deep caramel or bronze color. In her later years, her illness and smoking addiction caused her to wrinkle and become a bit more sallow than she should have been at her age.

-More pictures of my characters, including Sonya, on my DA account-

General Appearance: Sonya had a lovely, oval-shaped face, with calm, intelligent almond-shaped eyes, delicate cheekbones, and an expressive mouth. Her lips are of a wine-kissed color, which some of her daughters inherited from her. Her nose is straight and small, and her jaw tapers to a gentle point. She had arched, expressive eyebrows that both Vivace and Cadenza inherited, but hers more often formed serene, gentler expressions, or those of sorrow. Her hair was thick and straight, which only Algretta got from her. In her younger days, she was considered a Castilian rose, a beauty of her tribe, and much of her appeal only grew richer with age, as her face gained more character and wisdom. Sadly, her smoking habit also added far more lines and weariness to her features, signs of illness and age that would only worsen with time. She has the looks of a mother who has seen much throughout her life.

She was of average height, a bit taller than most women of Latin heritage, and moved with grace and a kind of musical rhythm to her gait. Her hips and shoulders always swayed as if in an elegant dance, and she gestured fluidly with her hands often when she spoke. As she grew older, her hands often sought a cigarette, but she was even more content to be holding a guitar, a castanet, or her sewing needles.

She took to wearing old or handmade clothes often when she became a mother, instead preferring to spend what money they had for many years on clothing or fabric to make things for her children. She favored warm and earth tones, oranges, browns, ochres, and yellows, and they often featured some sort of traditional pattern or the motifs of the Navarre tribe. She enjoyed wearing sandals, blouses, and long skirts, as well as the occasional dress. As years went on, she modernized her wardrobe a little with capri or cargo pants to keep odds and ends and charms in. She also liked to wear patterned shawls on colder nights. Her ears always bore golden or woven earrings of one sort or another, and her arms were full of bracelets, her fingers full of rings. She favored a particular sun-shaped amulet necklace from her mother, but also wore other keepsakes of her tribe.

One such keepsake was the headdress she took to wearing in her later years, a hairband adorned with two woven buns to be placed over the ears. The headdress was said to help a woman focus through outside distractions and listen better for wisdom from the gods, and also symbolized fertility. The headdress was often given as a sign of status and respect to women in certain tribes, and typically signified a midwife or wisewoman.

Homeplace: Catalunia, Castile, Airopa, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Buried: at Santa Mariela, Rubato, South Cordelia, Earth

Occupation: In life, she was a midwife, fortune-teller, music and dance tutor, cook, washerwoman, seamstress, and many other things. Above all, she was a gypsy, a wife, and a mother. She would have told you those were more than full-time jobs of their own.

Weapons: None.

Powers/Magic/Skills: She wielded earth magic. She taught her daughters much of what they knew about magic and the Spirits of the world growing up.

Personality: Calm, wise, and full of life, Sonya Madrigal was a loving wife and kind mother who brought the traditions of her gypsy life in Castile to her daughters at home. She was an animated storyteller, using voices and gestures and sometimes even quick drawings to captivate her daughters’ imaginations and teach them lessons in a far more lasting way than plain lectures ever could have.

She had a love for music, cooking, and dance, and loved to teach her children to share in the same. She had a deep reverence for the power granted to her, and handled her magic with control, intelligence, and care. She could do more with a well chosen word than most could do with a fist. When her daughters fought, it was often their mother who brought peace back to the household.

Throughout her later years, Sonya struggled with an addiction to nicotine and fought with smoking and lung cancer for the rest of her life. In times of hardship or sadness, the addiction would return stronger than ever, and she never quite escaped its vice grip.

History: Sonya grew up in Castile, traveling into Magella and other bordering countries with her parents, siblings, and the Navarre tribe. Her father Roque was once cheated out of the family’s gold and horses, and when he tried to make right against the man who fooled him, he suddenly took ill. Stories circled about il diablo rojo, the red demon the gypsies said came for those who went back on their word. Some said Roque had sworn something by his power to someone before and failed to follow through, and karma had come to make things right, and doubly so. The family was supported by the tribe throughout his illness, but he never fully recovered, and neither did they. Gypsies were few and far between in Airopa in those days, and their way of life was dying out. Roque passed without ever getting his justice from the man who cheated him. Sonya took to cigarettes then, finding the comfort from old crones and jaded youths who sought solace in the drag of a roll-up.

Much happened after, and she had taken to performing dances with her sisters to help earn money, when they weren’t telling fortunes. It was around this time that she met Galliard. See Cadenza’s and Galliard’s histories for much of the rest.

She passed away from lung cancer when Cadenza was 29 years old, shortly before the young woman had met Rain for the second time that would lead to their relationship. She never got to meet Kate.

Anton Dionne

Name: Anton Lorenzo Dionne

Nicknames/Aliases: “The Man of Many Faces”, the “Financial Assassin”, and many other unsavory names.

Age: Deceased

Sex: Male

Race: Human, of mixed Spanish, Italian, French, and South American origin. Not a mage, but rather endowed with another kind of power that allowed him to steal the appearance of anyone he touched and so willed to switch with, causing him to assume the target’s appearance while the target assumed his. He could then impersonate them, down to DNA, voice, etc. To revert back to his real self, he simply needed to touch one of his own possessions that had his DNA or some trace of him on it, and will himself back to normal. (More detailed in the terms of his world here, just scroll to the section for “Those Who Can Alter the Nature of Bodies”. His kind has no proper name.)

Height: 6'1" or 6'1 ½"

Weight: 175 pounds

Eye Color: A cool, sharp, iron gray, characteristic of many Cernilians.

Hair Color/Style: Coal black and straight, cut in a shaggy, low-maintenance style that ended just before his shoulders. Worn parted in the middle and without bangs. He also had a moustache and light goatee, with light stubble on his chin.

Skin Color/Complexion: The deep olive, slightly ashen complexion associated with his countrymen. His hands were dry and callused, and he had a scar on his cheek from a knife fight long ago. His hands also bore some scars.

General Appearance: Known for often looking disheveled and nearly always having hair on his chest, Anton was a man of roguish, sharp features. He had keen, shrewd eyes and a rare smile that would easily turn into a sly, dry-humored smirk much of the time. No matter how often he shaved, he would always have the shadow of stubble or facial hair on his chin, so he stopped bothering much long ago. Despite his long hair, he never looked feminine—instead he gave the impression of a shady, yet self-assured criminal, one who did not give a damn about the social mores or fashions of the time.

When he didn’t have a cigar or cigarette in his hands, he often smelled and looked as if he had just smoked one, his stance always limber and easy and relaxed. The dangerous quality of a languid predator, ready to pounce without any sign of tension, resided in his muscles. He was lanky but managed to make it look strong, in a sharp, quick kind of way. His shoes were often kept fairly clean while his clothes were dusty—once it was remarked that this showed he had skewed priorities. While always dressed pretty well, he never once wore a tie. He had both his ears pierced, out of tradition for his wife’s culture. Normally he just kept small gold hoops in the piercings. He favored dress shoes or steel-toed work boots.

Theme Songs:
Known Family:
Vivace Altair Madrigal-Dionne – wife (deceased)
Alessandra “Alex” Zaniah Dionne (Vossler) – daughter
Fabricia “Fabi” Muscida Dionne (Leos) – daughter

Alejandro Dionne – father (deceased)
Cassandra Feluja-Dionne – mother (deceased)
Emilio Dorian Dionne – older brother (first seen in His Imperial Majesty)
Enrico Dionne – younger brother (deceased)

Galliard Vinicius Madrigal – father-in-law
Sonya Deneb Navarre-Madrigal – mother-in-law (deceased)
Algretta Gatria Madrigal – fourth youngest sister-in-law
Luminari Maia Madrigal – third youngest sister-in-law
Arietta Mira Madrigal – second youngest sister-in-law
Cadenza Vega Madrigal – youngest sister-in-law

Homeplace: Pirlot, Cernilia, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Buried: at Citta, Cernilia, South Cordelia, Earth

Occupation: In life, he was the joint crime lord of the Madrigal-Dionne mafia that controlled much of the underground in Rubato and Cernilia. While his wife Vivace was a more public face, he took care of many dealings behind the scenes. He had a greater presence in Cernilia. He was also the liaison to his mother, Cassandra.

Weapons: In life, he was a renowned shot with many types of firearms, but favored a Beretta. He was never seen without some kind of knife or dagger at his side, but was a formidable appointment with anything he could use as a weapon.

Powers/Magic/Skills: Detailed in the “Race” section above.

Personality: Confident but never overly so, Anton Dionne was a career criminal with a cynical side and a love for Parejo and Citta Royale cigars. He conducted his deals with patience and a shrewd, calculating mind, ever ready to catch a business partner up in a deal or a trick. He knew the mafia business well and was a perfect match for Vivace’s trail-blazing ambition.

His views on family were conflicted. While some said he resented his mother for her involvement in his father’s death, others saw him as following the closest in her footsteps with the establishment of the Madrigal-Dionne mafia throughout Rubato and Cernilia. He lost contact with his older brother long ago, and was not close to his younger brother Enrico. Only his daughter, Alex Dionne, seems to give a different account of the man—as a caring, loving father who tried his best for her despite dangerous and unforgiving conditions. She does not believe he gave up her sister Fabricia willingly.

History: Born to Alejandro Dionne and his wife Cassandra, Anton was the second child of three brothers, and the one who inherited the closest thing to their mother’s powers. She took an interest in the boy from the first time he demonstrated his powers, accidentally switching bodies with his older brother Emilio (better known in the future by his middle name, Dorian) when the two were only toddlers. Anton cried and cried upon opening his eyes in his brother’s body, and their father begged Cassandra to switch them back before further trauma could be done. The woman did so, but the effects would last--the family would become one ruled by the powers of their bloodline, and the sons were only as useful to their mother as the things they could do. Rather quickly, Cassandra developed plans for each of them; Dorian, for his ability to manipulate genetics, Anton, for his ability to switch bodies with a target, and young Enrico for his strength and unnaturally large build.

The boys would go to school with Alejandro’s insistence, but after their studies each day, they were sent on little tasks and errands by Cassandra. These would become more challenging and more questionable as the boys grew older. First they only tricked other street scrum, but later regular citizens, government workers, bankers, police. Dorian wished to pursue secondary school, but when his chance came, his mother denied him. He was too useful to send off to some pricey high school for further formal education. It was time he joined her in her business. When Anton was of age, he did not even believe that he had a choice.

By the time he was in his teens, he became resigned and accustomed to criminal life. Simple things like stealing from market stands at the bazaar or pick-pocketing passersby were second nature. Hijacking cars or holding up small stores were an afternoon’s diversion. Even in his preteen years, Anton had a firm enough grasp on his powers to be able to switch appearances with unsuspecting targets and make withdrawals from their banks or other damaging transactions. One of his mother’s favorite tasks for him was to find a low-level politician or other official and steal his appearance, and use it to make compromising photos or gather other useful material for blackmail. The young man’s sense of morality became so jaded and warped over the years that he felt nearly nothing for the victims of these schemes. In some part of his heart, he felt as used as they were.

In the midst of one of these schemes, as he followed a city councilman in Blancwood, Rubato towards one of his meetings, Anton came across a young woman who seemed to be tailing the man for her own reasons. He had never gotten the chance to be around too many girls his own age since finishing primary school—no one but the street rats around his hometown, and they weren’t exactly what you’d call pretty. But this girl was beautiful. She had the brightest hazel eyes he had ever seen, like they had their own private fire behind them, a spark of intelligence that captivated him even more than just a nice face. Her hair was a mass of bouncing raven curls that framed her angular cheekbones and rosy lips. And in that dress she was wearing… teenaged Anton nearly lost his target while he was busy watching her hips. What on earth was a girl like that doing targeting some lowly bureaucrat like him?

He decided in that moment that he’d much rather help her than carry out another one of his mother’s tired schemes. What was one more city councilman in her vice? He wished to impress the girl with his powers, but it turned out that she had powers of her own—she was a gypsy, and a fire mage besides. When finally they met, he was taken by her beauty and her passion for everything she did, and she with his street savvy and sly smile, and his gray eyes, like granite. The rest, from there on, as they say, is history.

It was not many years after when the Dionne boys were stricken, however, by the death of their father Alejandro. The rumors said Cassandra herself was responsible, but Anton did not want to believe it. Even so, the part of him that had grown to know what a killer was like, what it took to do such things, could recognize that side readily in his mother. There had always been whispers that she had stolen bodies back in Airopa, where many believed she was from, and had married other men for their power, influence, or resources and eventually killed them off when they became a hassle. Alejandro himself had been a smuggler turned honest sailor, but he still retained many of his old contacts even after he had taken steps to reform. Had she done the same with him? After his death, Dorian became even more estranged from the family, taking his leave of their home in Pirlot and changing his name to take his middle one. Word went around that he was paying his own way to study as a doctor, but Anton saw him very seldom for years after. It was not until the Madrigal-Dionne mafia was truly in full swing that he sought him out again.

See Cadenza’s history for much more of it. He joined the Cernilian army in the struggle between Blancwood and Cernilia in order to avoid capture and experimentation by his own home country’s government. He was killed in that very war by a freak accident where his powers led him to be mistook for an enemy soldier, leaving behind two twin daughters, Alessandra and Fabricia Dionne.

Alessandra Dionne

Name: Alessandra Zaniah Dionne (adoptive surname: Vossler)

Nicknames/Aliases: “Alex” by most, especially those who can’t manage to pronounce her proper first name right

Age: 9

Sex: Female

Race: Human, of mixed Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and South American origin. Slight hint of Romani, despite her gypsy roots being more akin to the Iberian Kale/Andalusian gypsies of our world. She also has some French roots on her Dionne side. More specifically, she is considered an electricity/lightning “mage”, and possibly could grow to be an "enchanter" in distinction (explained in terms of her world here, just scroll down to the sections for “mages”) although she is too young to tell for sure.

She also possesses the hereditary powers passed down from her father’s side, explained further on in the Skills/Magic section (detailed some here, just go to the sections for “Those Who Can Alter the Nature of Bodies”.)

Height: Of fairly average height for a girl of her age, a little taller than most (around 4'9".)

Weight: On the lighter side of average, a bit thin, but healthy.

Eye Color: A rich, energetic hazel.

Hair Color/Style: Coal black and straight like her father’s, worn parted down the middle and down to her shoulders, with a few shorter tresses that frame her face.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, olive skin with a warm tone, that tends towards a lighter caramel or bronze color, slightly more olive than her mother’s thanks to her father’s genes. It is smooth and blemish free.

-More pictures of my characters, including Alex, on my DA account-

General Appearance: Alex has her mother Vivace’s high cheekbones and her sharp eyes, but her father’s stronger chin, and it seems her face may mature to be a bit longer as his was in adulthood. She has her father’s straight hair and his height, but in most other ways, she appears to be very much a Madrigal. Her eyes are large and almond-shaped, expressive, and her lips are quick to smiles or frowns. She has a small, pert nose, a little thin, like her father’s, but rounded, like her mother’s family tends towards.

Alex often dresses her slender frame in a style most would consider tomboyish, preferring shorts and t-shirts with athletic or skateboarding sneakers rather than skirts or dresses. She hates having to wear her school uniform, with its starched shirt, pleated skirt, mary janes, and tie. Her most prized possession is the necklace her adoptive father Monroe gave her, a specially-tempered steel charm in the shape of a lightning bolt.

Birthplace: Citta, Cernilia, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Homeplace: Rancha Rosa, Rubato, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Current Residence: A sizeable townhouse in Rancha Rosa, Rubato, only a block away from the city’s police station. It doesn’t have much of a yard. She lives with her adoptive parents, Tracey de Carlo and Monroe Vossler.

Occupation: Elementary school student at Blancwood Academy

Powers/Magic/Skills: Alex is a budding young lightning mage and a quick study. She is currently learning to use and control her magic with her aunt, Cadenza Madrigal. Some of her skills include using the electricity in her body to speed her running, and shocking people with the charged-up static electricity built up in her body or theirs. She still has a lot to learn, though, and sometimes still has accidents, where she might short-circuit an appliance in the house or blow out a lightbulb or television. More sensitive electronics sometimes go haywire when she's around, especially if she's distressed or worked up about something.

She is also capable of using the Dionne family powers to switch appearances with another person, as described in her father Anton's profile (see under the "Race" section for details.) However, without her father around to teach her, she knows very little about using this ability, and has been forbidden to try by her aunts. In their eyes, it has only led to trouble and hurt for numerous people, including for Anton himself. Alex is still curious, but the stories have kept her from trying anything to this day.

Personality: Spirited and spunky, Alex is a tomboy through and through, like a puppy with a lot of bark and bite. She loves sports and games and competitions, and has the appetite of a grown man several times her size. There is seemingly no end to her zest for food and fun. The idea of most "girly" activities makes her roll her eyes and complain, and mushy things, like romance, only sicken her more. She is a deeply loyal friend, and even more loyal to her twin sister, Fabricia, whom she believes it is her duty to stand up for and protect.

Under her childlike innocence, there is a tough girl who has lived through some very hard times in her short life--but who has never fully lost hope. She hates to ever be seen crying, and would sooner get angry than be seen as weak or sad by most. She is willing to get into a fight to right something she believes is wrong, no matter the odds. She will always defend the weakling and the underdog, and thinks it's important to help people, even if others think of them as "freaks" or "outsiders", as her twin Fabi is sometimes called for her strange powers. She tends to befriend the jocks, the boys, and the outcasts, and treats them all warmly, thinking everyone deserves a chance and a friend. The more snooty, judgmental kids at school, like the prissy rich girl Lily, frustrate her to no end. The girls are known to be rivals in every class they have at Blancwood Academy.

Alex remembers the father who had loved and lost her, and sometimes still thinks of the old days. But at the same time, she loves her new dad Monroe, and appreciates her new mom Tracey, as weird and quirky and stuffy as she sometimes can be, and is happy in her new home, with all of her rediscovered family. She idolizes her aunt Cadenza and other strong women, and hopes to someday "kick butt", in her words, like her aunt and take care of the family. While she is naturally rather clever, school bores her and she rarely applies herself to any class but gym. Her teachers frequently complain about her performance and attitude towards her studies, but no matter how often she gets lectured, or gets detentions, it seems to make no difference. She has become fast friends with a lot of the other boys in detention because of this, like Christopher Reeds (or "Merridale", as she calls him, after his new dad's last name.)

Some of her favorite activities include skateboarding, rollerblading, soccer, kickball, video games, watching superhero cartoons, eating, and basketball. She also likes rock music and action movies. If you ask her about them, she'd tell you her favorite heroes are Static Shock and the Flash.

History: Born in secret in a bunker in Citta, Cernilia, Alex Dionne never had much. She never knew her mother Vivace had more family beyond those thick, reinforced concrete walls, or that her father Anton had brothers and a mother still, or really much of anything of the world beyond their hideout in the capital. Her parents argued frequently over the business of the mafia, and there were fights, ugly fights, and flames... she could remember the flames dancing on her mae's fingertips, when someone broke something, when a comment cut too close, and her father would always step in to take the blow, silent, stone-faced, steady as ever. She loved her papa with every fiber of her being--he was her world in those days. In the bleak, gray, cheerless world of the bunker, he was her sunshine, her protector, her all.

Before she could remember much but hazy shapes and colors, familiar voices, there had been another, though. A warm shape next to her, always, that giggled and cooed like she did when papa came to play. A shape that meant sister. She did not understand how she knew that back then, but there was a bond between them, something even brighter than the spark that one day came from her own fingers, and when she was with her sister, she knew that she was home...

But then one day, her sister was gone, no longer there by her side. When she could start to remember things, to remember sights and faces again, she felt this emptiness, this missing piece, a person she ached for, even though she never even knew her face. When she was three and a half, she asked her papa where her sister had gone, and he had only looked at her, and drew her close, and held her there, ruffling her dark, soft hair for a long time. He looked like he was hurting, but he didn't say a thing. Sister was gone. That was all she knew. Sister was gone and no one would ever say why, but she wouldn't forget that warm shape that had been there, been part of her, her friend...

As the days went on, papa was home less and less. There was only the lady, her mae, fiery and distant, who shot her sharp looks when she drew too close, and scarcely had time for her save for when she would set down a cold plate of food in front of her, or some water, and then go away. The sound of her boots clicking away on the concrete floor, of her curses, of her whip cracking, became her only real memories of her mother. There was her face, her voice, but... those felt as if they had belonged to someone else. Someone foreign to her, a leader and a businesswoman and many other things, but not her mae. There was only papa. Papa would be enough, if she could just stay with papa all her life...

Then the day came. The day that had never made sense. Papa had left for something they called a "war", something he said he had to do to protect their home, and he'd kissed her on the head and told her he loved her, and that he would be home as soon as he could. But he never came back. She waited by the door with the bouncy ball he'd given her to play with the last time he'd been home, and waited, and no one would tell her where he'd gone, why he wasn't coming, what had happened to her papa. She remembered something flashing through her then, and all the power went out in the bunker. She was crying. Her mother tried to approach her, and reared back with a electric shock when she tried to grab her. Her eyes were livid then, only she'd come back with the whip, and lashed at the space near her until she'd broken into tears again. But she'd gotten so scared that the lightning outside stopped, and her mother could pick her up. She was only five. Her mother took her outside and told her never to come back to the bunker. That she had no daughters now. Then the concrete door slammed shut, and she was alone.

Only five. No papa, no sister, nobody left in her life, Alex wandered the streets of Cernilia, begging for food, stealing it sometimes when she had to, mostly living off the kindness of old ladies and other strangers when she was lucky enough to find them. She bummed bus rides sometimes to get out of bad weather, and walked much of the time. One night when she got lost, there had even been a spark in the sky to help her see her way in the dark, a storm of greenish lightning and a jolly, slim man she swore she saw laughing and waving at her up in the clouds--the Spirit of Lightning, Zeppo Thoren, some later said he was. She lived like that for three years, until she found a spot to shelter her all the way in Rubato, in the forgotten Temple of the Sun.

On that day, Tracey de Carlo and Monroe Vossler found her, and took her into their lives, adopted her into their family, and her life has never been the same since. She got to meet her mother's sisters, whom she all found to be very different from her mother, and her grandfather Galliard, and best of all, they soon found her sister Fabricia, her missing twin, and for the first time in years, her life started to feel complete... all that was missing was Papa. But she later learned he had passed away on that day, that horrible day when he never came home, and could only hope he'd gone to a better place, even though there was still so much she wished she could tell him, even though she wished he could be there one more time to say he loved her, and ruffle her hair, and hold her until all the sadness went away...

Fabricia Dionne (in progress)

~STILL IN PROGRESS~

Name: Fabricia Muscida Dionne (adoptive surname: Leos)

Nicknames/Aliases: “Fabi” by most, “Fabs” sometimes by her sister Alex

Age: 9

Sex: Female

Race: Human, of mixed Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and South American origin. Slight hint of Romani, despite her gypsy roots being more akin to the Iberian Kale/Andalusian gypsies of our world. She also has some French roots on her Dionne side. Possesses magic, believed to spring forth from the soul, and run in her blood. More specifically, she is considered a "Dreamer", a particular kind of life “mage”, and will likely grow to be of an "enchanter" class in distinction as her kind tend to be (explained in terms of her world here, just scroll down to the sections for “mages” and "Dreamers".) She does not fully understand yet what it means to be a Dreamer, but her aunt Cadenza and other adults have taken great notice of the fact and her abilities.

Eye Color: A rich, but dreamy hazel.

Hair Color/Style: Coal black and straight like her father’s, worn parted down the middle and often tied back in two pigtails or braids, with a crown-shaped hairclip her adoptive mother Ari made for her to hold back some of her longer bangs.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, olive skin with a warm tone, that tends towards a lighter caramel or bronze color, slightly more olive than her mother’s thanks to her father’s genes. It is smooth and blemish free.

-More pictures of my characters, including Fabi, on my DA account-

General Appearance: Like her sister Alex, Fabi has her mother Vivace’s high cheekbones, but her eyes are rounder, and her chin is a bit gentler in shape, giving her a soft, slightly heart-shaped face. She has her father’s straight hair and his height, but in most other ways, she appears to be very much a Madrigal. Her eyes are large and almond-shaped and expressive, but she also has a bright smile all her own. She has a small, pert nose, a little thin, like her father’s, but rounded, like her mother’s family tends towards.

Fabi often prefers to dress in more girly attire, favoring dresses, skirts, and blouses, generally in shades of pink, purple, or soft pastel greens, peaches, yellows, or blues. She adores playing dress-up and imagining fanciful costumes, and this penchant for fantasy comes across in her sense of dress, as she'll often adore the more creative cuts and decorations she can find, loving ruffles and small crown or heart details. Her favorite accessory is the crown-shaped clip her adoptive mother gave her.

For school, she must wear the Blancwood Academy uniform of a starched skirt, pleated skirt, mary janes, and a tie, in the colors of sun gold, dark crimson or burgundy, coal black, and white. She does not mind the uniform as much as her sister Alex, but she does find it a little lacking in imagination. She's happiest when she's free to express her creativity through her clothes.

Theme Songs:
Known Family:
Galliard Vinicius Madrigal – grandfather
Sonya Deneb Navarre-Madrigal – grandmother (deceased)

Vivace Altair Madrigal-Dionne – mother (deceased)
Anton Lorenzo Dionne – father (deceased)
Alessandra “Alex” Zaniah Dionne (Vossler) – fraternal twin sister

Arietta Mira Madrigal – maternal aunt, adoptive mother
Zachary Leos - adoptive father

Algretta Gatria Madrigal – maternal aunt
Cadenza Vega Madrigal – maternal aunt
Katherine “Kate” Anne Madrigal – cousin
Two cousins on the way, yet to be born or named

Alejandro Dionne – grandfather (deceased)
Cassandra Feluja-Dionne – grandmother (deceased)
Emilio Dorian Dionne – paternal uncle (first seen in His Imperial Majesty)
Enrico Dionne – paternal uncle (deceased)

Birthplace: Citta, Cernilia, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Occupation: Elementary school student at Blancwood Academy

Powers/Magic/Skills: Fabricia is a budding young Dreamer, a life mage of immense gifts whose very imagination can create wonders out of the life energy present in the world. With a wish, she could create a flower, a creature, even, some say, perhaps a person--but such work takes a toll the larger the undertaking, and young Dreamers seldom know how to control their powers well enough to only create things they intend.

Since Fabi was found and adopted, her aunt Cadenza has striven to teach her how to better control her gifts, but many mishaps still occur. Sometimes an idle daydream turns into accidental disaster, or a funny idea into something very unfunny for the target. Numerous times, the girl has unintentionally turned a friend into a horse or rabbit, or wished dinner could be cupcakes and spoiled a whole meal her mother was working on. These mistakes were reversed, and sometimes laughs were had, but after enough mishaps, the mistakes ceased to be amusing, even for the girl, and grew stressful.

Even worse were the things she created whilst she slept. Nightmares would crawl, full-formed, from under her bed when she dreamt poorly, and unchecked. She could create beautifully sweet things--but life could also be cruel, and terrible, and as such, her powers were capable of conjuring up such things as well.

Fabi has made some strides, the greatest of which has been to sometimes restrain herself from tapping into her power at all. The girl cannot help but daydream, but she has at least learned to sense when her magic is seeping into the vision, and snap herself out of it most times before it's too late.

But for all the bad, there is a great deal of good to be done--none can boast of healing power quite like a life mage. She has studied to learn to help treat ailments with her gift, and wish for health and strength for others, to great effect. At times, her innocence and well-meaning have even created life--from a pet rock her adoptive father, Zachary, brought home, having been swindled by a merchant, she created a pet turtle, Shelly. The little animal is her favorite companion, to this day, and appears more healthy and hale than any normal turtle that ever lived.

Fabi is also capable of using the Dionne family powers to switch appearances with another person, as described in her father Anton's profile (see under the "Race" section for details.) However, without her father around to teach her, she knows very little about using this ability, and has been forbidden to try by her aunts. In their eyes, it has only led to trouble and hurt for numerous people, including for Anton himself.

Personality: Gentle and sweet-natured, Fabi is a girl who always has her head in the clouds. From her first memories in the orphanage where she grew up, she was always dreaming of distant lands, of a fairy tale family that would come and save her, to tell her she was their long-lost and beloved daughter, whom they never would part from again. Because of this, even years later, she still sees things in this very innocent and idealistic light, wanting to believe the best in people, and casting them all as heroes, princes, princesses, and knights in her own personal imaginary tale. She is frequently caught up in her own daydreams.

At first glance, she would seem a much weaker and more sensitive girl than her twin sister, Alex, but under her softer exterior is a resilient heart, and strong belief that tomorrow can be better than today. She seems to intuitively understand that other people all carry their own burdens and pain, and even when wronged, she seeks to sympathize with them as best she can, and to understand. But as only a young girl, there are still things well beyond her understanding, and so she is more than capable of being hurt, of misreading things, or of being afraid or sad. Even in her worst times, however, ever since her family and her new parents found her, she has held faith that someone will come to rescue her, and that she will have reason to smile again.

When she hears of someone in trouble, Fabi is nearly always compelled to help, sometimes going far out of her way because of her compassionate heart. She often forgets her own limits and exhausts herself or her magic in the effort to help another. She also still has some difficulty controlling her powers, and if her imagination gets too carried away or out of control, she still may accidentally conjure up things she never meant to make real. Sometimes, these are wonderful, fantastical things, or funny mistakes that can be undone, but others can become more problematic, and those things conjured up by her nightmares are often serious trouble. Thankfully, her nightmares have been soothed the longer she has lived with her new parents, and her mother Arietta knows how to calm her and comfort her best when she gets scared.

While she spends much of her days, when at home, with her mother, she also adores her new father Zachary, and casts him as the hero in many of her stories. She seems unable to believe he could do any wrong or ever fail her, and always greets him with glee and delight whenever he returns home from any of his travels. Her mother Arietta is a constant comfort and source of love and guidance to her, and the two balance one another out well. More recently, after the events of "Purifying Rubato", a young man named Kara has joined their family, and Fabi looks up to him like the big brother she never had before.

Avello (in progress)

~STILL IN PROGRESS~

Name: Avello (which translates roughly to “He Who Commands the Skies” in the native language of the peoples who inhabited the land of Rubato before the gypsies were exiled there.)

Nicknames: “Purple” from Laurana, “bag of scales”, “oversized crocodile handbag”, “tub o’ lard”, “blowtorch”, etc. from Cadenza.

Age: Around 3 or so in human years

Sex: Male

Race: Dragon

Height: As large as a two-story house (somewhere around 20-24 feet.)

Weight: Several tons.

Eyes: A vivid, ever-curious yellow-green with slit black, reptilian pupils.

Scales: A deep, rich violet, like brilliant amethyst.

-More pictures of my characters, including Avello, on my DA account-

General Appearance: Avello is a nearly adult dragon with brilliant violet scales, a pair of short whitish cranial horns, along with larger, curving yellowish tooth-colored ones, and bright, curious, and large yellow-green eyes. His wings are strong and graceful, and their outstretched span is longer than he is tall, making them one of his most striking of features. His tail is long and ridged with darker, spiky, harder scales, as are his forelegs and some of his back (up until his wings.) He can fold down these harder scales when he feels relaxed and safe. His claws are long and of the same color as his teeth, fangs, and horns. His tongue is forked and dark.

Avello’s head is roughly triangular and reptilian in shape, but with a less angular snout, and ear fins on either side to help catch sounds. He is very expressive for a reptile, as he was raised by a human and not by fellow dragons, and has some human-like mannerisms because of this.

Known Family:
Mother (unnamed dragon) – biological mother
Other unnamed siblings from the same dragon mother in their tribe

Cadenza Vega Madrigal – adoptive mother (human)
Katherine “Kate” Anne Madrigal – adoptive sister (human)

Laurana – adoptive sister (dragon)

Skills/Magic: Being a true dragon, Avello is capable of flight and breathing fire, and has tough, harder-than-steel scales, horns, teeth, and claws. Upon reaching physical "maturity" for a dragon of his clan, Avello has become naturally resistant to all kinds of magic to a great degree (an adaptation his clan developed to compete with other dragon clans that were very magically talented.) He did not, however, finish the traditional ritual of his tribe upon reaching adulthood, so his resistance isn't as complete as it could be. He possesses no magical ability himself, just as others of his clan do not.

Personality and other details: Avello has grown up from a mischievous little runt to a big, seemingly oafish, but well-meaning behemoth. His mother Cadenza protected him since he was an egg, and was one of the first people he saw when he hatched. As such, he is eternally loyal to her, like a baby duckling to its mother. She has raised him with tough love, and he has grown more accustomed to her teasing nicknames like “lardbag” and “tubs” than he has to any softer words of affection.

He has come to understand her tough love as the natural behavior of the alpha of their family, their protector and provider, and top predator, and gentler ways are often mistaken for submissiveness by his dragon instincts. All in all, he loves Cadenza like the dickens and would risk his life without a second thought whenever she may need him. He may be more clever than he appears, but a lot of this is lost on people who can’t get beyond how odd and quirky he’s grown up to be in human company.

No matter how much you insist to him that a human could not have given birth to a dragon, it does not matter to Avello who produced his egg and left him on the mountaintop where it was found. All that matters to him is that Cadenza cared for him, from a baby, to his strange, eventful "puberty", and now into the big beast he is today, showing love in her own way, even during what was a rough time for her then, when she'd first gotten him. He considers Kate his sister, and (Tiroth's dragon) Laurana has now become like a sister to him too, as well as a dear new friend.

For a dragon, he may seem rather tame. He has grown up with the company of humans rather than his own kind, and this has affected him in many ways. Avello will not raise a claw against a human being, unless his mother orders it. He is more prone to sniffing curiously at a stranger and nibbling at their clothing than he is to biting them or blowing fire. He is very curious in general, and kind-hearted in a way, only eating the meat his mother brings to him much of the time. Since befriending Laurana, he has learned to hunt a bit more, but still prefers eating the way Mommy has taught him.

Also since meeting Laurana, Avello has come to realize he has always longed for a friend of his own kind. He’s very protective of her, and thinks of her as a little sister, although at times it seems like she is the older or more mature one, such as when she is teaching him to hunt. He is quick and eager to learn, and often full of lots of youthful energy. Some people whom he has grown to like describe him as behaving like a big, scaly puppy sometimes.

He enjoys dumpster diving for snacks, and has strangely taken to eating cloth (among other odd things) for “roughage”, fuel for his internal fire. But his favorite treat is still big slabs of slightly cooked meat. He can be very playful and affectionate towards those he knows and trusts. He likes being petted best between the horns, and doesn't know his own strength most of the time. While human behavior and society still confuses him in some ways, he has come to know Rubato as his home, and understands more about its people than many of his kind who have lived lives more isolated from mankind.

His speech is a mixture of natural mountain dragon grunting, roaring, groans, etc. and his best attempts to mimic human sounds, as heard from his "mother" Cadenza (as these are all coming from a woman with a Latina accent, it only muddles things further.) His most recognizable word is "morgh", for "mom" or "mommy". Other dragons often have trouble understanding his strange speech, but Avello will doggedly continue to try speaking to them all the same. He has inherited some of his mother’s stubbornness.

He lives in Cadenza's huge backyard, behind the big new house she inherited when her old boyfriend Johnny Bones ascended to Heaven. He drinks water from tubs, hates wet weather (so the desert is great for him), and only lets Cadenza feed him much of the time, because she throws his food at him, which he likes. He likes catching it in his teeth. All in all, he's a curious, quirky, funny dragon, and part of the family.

Paris Valentia (in progress)

~STILL IN PROGRESS~

Name (and title): Sergeant Paris Santiago Valentia

Nicknames/Aliases: “Sir Blancwood” and “Galahad” by some buddies in the army.

Age: 30

Sex: Male

Race: Human, of mixed Portuguese, Spanish, and South American origin. (He possesses no apparent magical ability, explained a bit more in the terms of his world here. Just scroll down to the section for "humans".)

However, his encounter in the war some years ago with enemy soldier Anton Dionne, in which the other man used his power to switch appearances with him, left him permanently changed in a way he does not yet fully understand. He believes he may possess some hint of the deceased man’s powers, but experimentation by the Cernilian army following the war did not produce conclusive results. He was altered in their lab to have greater strength and stamina than a normal human being, as part of their projects to create better soldiers, but he escaped before much more could be done, and they have not been able to find him since he resumed his real identity.

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 172 pounds, in lean, dense soldier’s muscle

Eye Color: An expressive, compassionate gray-blue, often steady and full of faith and calm.

Hair Color/Style: Coal black and worn in shaggy, stylish, tousled layers, parted to one side, in memory of his mother Claudia who always liked his hair longer. The longest layer reaches down past the nape of his neck. His hair is straight but airy and full of body, with the shorter layers in front covering some of his forehead.

He had a long struggle being able to keep his hair longer in the army, but after hearing the story of his mother, and seeing his dedication to the military and his training firsthand, there has come to be an unspoken agreement amongst the generals not to make an issue of it any longer. So long as he ties it back and tucks it under his hat when necessary, he often is given a pass as a sign of respect for his service and sacrifice.

Skin Color/Complexion: Tanned, healthy olive skin with a tone that tends toward a warmer bronze color. It is often kept shaved smooth, but when he grows stubble, it covers his chin and jaw evenly.

General Appearance: Paris has a noble, intelligent look to his face, with handsome, more unique features inherited from his mixed heritage. His cheekbones are defined but subtle, his jaw long but ending in a proud chin, giving his face an overall oval structure, but with more refined strength in its lines. His brows are dark, strong, and neat, set above two gleaming gray-blue eyes, like a sky bright from a storm. They have a steadiness and an alertness about them, as if he is always prepared to protect you, always aware of his surroundings. His nose is proud and straight, almost regal, a sign of his family’s Portuguese background. It complements the long lines of his face and the shape of his cheekbones well.

His lips are thin and set in a potentially expressive, but often reserved mouth. When he smiles however, he warms up a room with his brilliant white grin, with the light that dances in his eyes. He often keeps clean-shaven, a habit ingrained in him from time in the army. His strong hands are also kept well, with few calluses from weapons and work, and neat nails. He has broad shoulders, a slim but well-muscled torso, and similarly slim but powerful legs. He is a tall man and yet carries himself with grace, with measured, easy strength, full of readiness but also full of manners.

When not working, he tends to dress in a more semi-formal, business casual type of style, with dress slacks instead of jeans, button-up shirts, sweaters, and sports jackets. Even when dressing more casually, he cleans up nicely. He wears loafers or other leather shoes more than sneakers, and is never seen in flip-flops or anything less. The Valentias have instilled in him a proper sense of appearance and dress in public, even if he does not follow all his family’s other rules any longer.

He has a warm, steady baritone voice, comforting and confident, always patient, and a rich, rolling, joyful laugh. He typically smells cleanly of soap, of light, cool cologne, of the crisp outdoor air.

Known Family:
Rogerio Valentia - father
Claudia Valentia – mother (deceased)
Eugenia Valentia – stepmother
Makayla Valentia – younger sister (16 years old)
Gabriela “Gabby” Valentia – youngest half-sister (10 years old)

Cadenza Vega Madrigal – ex-wife

Homeplace: Blancwood, Rubato, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Current Residence: A modestly-sized but upscale home near his family's house in Blancwood, Rubato. He regularly spends time at his father's house to watch over his little sisters and care for them.

Occupation: Sergeant in the Rubatoian army, although things have gotten more complicated with his exact role after his return from his identity mix-up and supposed “death”.

Weapons/Armor: Aside from his service gun, a Browning Hi-Power (FN P35), issued from the Rubatoian army, Paris generally keeps around a hunting knife, a pocket knife, and occasionally a few other things for defense or to help others, but his most notable weapon is below. As for armor, he will sometimes wear a Kevlar vest if preparing for danger. Cadenza has had it reinforced with a layer of mythril chainmail by Omar Vargas.

The Rising Sun: After his younger sister Makayla had to be rescued from the possession of a demon in “Sun, Surf, and Demons”, Paris received this sword from Cadenza, crafted by the deity William Nira as payment for her tutelage of Arin Bryant. She had it made for her former husband so that his family would never go unprotected from such threats again, knowing that he had all the fortitude to go against such enemies, but until then, never the means she had with her magic. Since he was entrusted with it, Paris has trained with the blade to harness its supernatural abilities as well as his training and experience as a soldier already prepared him to master its physical capabilities.

The sword itself is a silvery, elegant talwar, with a curving blade so brilliant it’s nearly white, and a simple but masterfully crafted hilt that is a work of art on its own. It bears a spike on its tip for attacking in extreme close quarters, but the most distinguishing feature of the blade goes beyond the physical. It has been enchanted so that when it cuts through a target, made of physical or even purely spiritual matter, it can banish whatever foul influences may be upon it, like the dawn washes away black magic with the coming of each new day, giving the talwar its name. Through this power, it can exorcise demonic presences from people or even places, should the sword come into contact with them. Should it touch a demon, it will sear the creature instantly, its very touch abhorrent to the beast, and able to kill or exile it back to where it came. In Paris’ hands, with his Christian faith, there is something almost holy about it, and some dark creatures even fear he could be something like an avenging angel with the blade in his hands.

To mortal threats, it is still a formidable weapon, with a kiss like burning light if it scores a cut on flesh. The sword is unbreakable, harder than steel, and yet light enough to be used with ease. When not in use, Paris carries it in its black sheathe at his waist, ready to be drawn. The blade is 33 inches long, with an additional 6 inches for the hilt, making the sword 39 inches long overall. It weighs about 2.8 pounds.

Personality: The key word to understanding Paris is faith. He has faith in his family, faith in his friends, and faith in the Lord, and these beliefs guide nearly all his actions. He believes in looking for the good side of people, in ignoring rumors and hearsay to make his own decisions or impressions, in never judging too soon, and in giving second chances. While he can be incredibly serious at times, especially as the years have gone by and dealt him hardships, he also retains the light, carefree sense of humor he had as a boy, and this side comes out more around his little sisters, Makayla and Gabriela, and his former wife, Cadenza Madrigal, as well as with other friends from his younger days.

In his work for the army, and in tough spots now, he is someone to be counted on, someone who will step up and take the initiative to protect someone in need or get the job done. He finds enjoyment in challenging himself, in pushing his limits, and the adrenaline from a good fight, or a hard mission, get him pumping. In these times, he is wholly capable of cutting loose, and loves to crack jokes with his fellow soldiers or friends to lighten things when they are most grim. He stays positive and constructive, and never fully believes a solution cannot be found to a problem. The Lord will lead the way, or he and his buddies will just need to knock their heads together a little harder to get what He might be hinting is the next step. Paris does not expect to be given answers--but to work for them, and find the way, little by little. It's a light to find your path, he believes, not a free ride. He respects those that think the same, and don't expect to be handed everything in life.

Towards other faiths and beliefs, he is incredibly tolerant, fully espousing the idea of "love thy neighbor". He does not try to preach or push his beliefs on others, but simply holds them privately and personally as his own guiding light in life, one that has helped him get through much pain, and brought him joy, as well. His friends know his faith is one of the biggest things that got him through the lost of his beloved mother, Claudia, when he was a young boy. They also know the other major thing was his first love, Cadenza.

These days, after all they have been through, he hopes it might be possible to get together again with the gypsy, but also understands they have grown very much, and changed very much as people since the days before the great confusion over his supposed "death" in the war. He seeks to support her as a friend, and give her space and time, and is happy to once again at least be a part of her life. He also has taken up the role of guardian and protector for his little sisters once more since returning, knowing that they need him there while their father Rogerio runs around at the frivolous and demanding whims of their stepmother, Eugenia. To the girls, he is almost like a second father, a role he fits into well, with patience and love.

Royal Mage Carla della Foncé (of Rubato)

~STILL IN PROGRESS~

Name (and title): Royal Mage Carla della Foncé of Rubato

Age: You don’t ask a lady her age! (But roughly about 70.)

Apparent Age: Anywhere from her mid seventies or older, especially because of the sun damage to her skin, and the make-up she cakes on.

Sex: Female

Race: Human, of mixed French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and South American origin. There is also some mixed Italian Romani and Iberian Kale heritage further back in her family line. Possesses magic, believed to spring forth from the soul, and run in her blood. More specifically, she is considered a "mage" of an "enchanter" distinction (explained in terms of her world here, just scroll down to the section for "mages".)

Height: 5'2", but before her back got so hunched, in her younger days, she was a bit taller.

Weight: 145 pounds

Eye Color: Gray and wise, like stone that has seen many summers pass.

Hair Color/Style: It was once black, but has now gone all gray, wavy and often bound up in a large bun at the back of her head. She sometimes wears veils, headscarves, or hairnets to keep it back, or two woven, bun-like ornaments as part of a headdress given to a gypsy woman when she reaches a certain status and age in her community. The buns are worn over the ears, and are said to help a woman block out distractions so that she may better listen to the gods and remember their wisdom. They are also a sign of fertility, and the headdress was therefore often worn to signify midwives and wisewomen in certain tribes.

Skin Color/Complexion: A rich olive but darkened and wrinkled by the sun and age, into a leathery, bronze, deeply browned and sunburnt hue. She cakes on excessive foundation and powder in a slightly healthier shade, but it settles into her wrinkles, and ends up not helping her complexion very much.

General Appearance: Carla is a woman to whom age and stress has not been kind, and yet she still cuts a solid, imposing figure, looking every bit a wrinkled and painted matriarch who has weathered many a harsh season. Her body has grown heavy over the years, from bearing many children, and a slowing metabolism in her older age, and although her smoking kept her weight down in the past, it has now caught up to her. She has drooping double chins, and saggy, fleshy arms, with a portly midsection, slightly hunched back, and thick, short legs. Her hands have swollen up with arthritis and age to leathery old things, covered with rings, and yet somehow still deft with a sewing needle or a surgical stitch.

Her eyes, behind lashes caked with mascara, gaze upon the world with a look of wisdom and patience, although her lips, shriveled thin over time, and always rouged a garish red, often quirk into bawdy grins when in the presence of handsome men. She has oval-shaped eyes, with a wider than average, but short nose, and a wide mouth. Her eyebrows are colored darker than her gray hair, and frequently overplucked, until very thin. She has deep laugh lines around her mouth, bags under her eyes from stress of serving for decades as a midwife and Royal Mage, and deep frown lines in her forehead and crows’ feet at the corners of her eyes. She tends to powder on far too much green or bronze eyeshadow, not seeming to notice that at her age, it makes her look more like a clown than any young beauty. She seems determined to cling to her supposedly famed good looks from when she was a young woman in her prime.

Carla frequently favors headscarves and other accessories in her hair, and wears it in a bun much of the time (as described in “Hair” above.) She also loves to wear a lot of jewelry, and is seldom seen without large golden hoops, or something in the shape of a leaf or tree, as was once the symbol of her ancestor Lupe della Fonce’s tribe. She favors rings set with topaz or emerald, and turquoise beads for her necklaces. She tends to dress in shawls and housedresses or housecoats, with stockings, and flat, comfortable brown shoes. Much of her clothing is in shades of greens or browns.

Her official mage cloak of office is a deep, rich burgundy with gold and crimson suns and moons embroidered along the collar.

Notable Family:
Much of the town of Agra (in Rubato) is claimed to be related to Carla in some way, and she is known to have had at least 20 children, many of whom lived to have children of their own. Some of her most notable relatives, therefore, are listed below:

Cindy della Foncé – one of Carla’s many granddaughters, who trains as a spirit channeler
Lupe della Foncé – ancestor during the Gypsy Purge, whom she inherited many diaries and books from

Homeplace: Agra, Rubato, South Cordelia, Earth (city, country, continent, world)

Current Residence: An old historic house in Agra, Rubato, covered in misdirection spells and barriers.

Occupation: Royal Mage of Rubato, for four decades and counting.

Powers/Magic/Skills: Earth magic (more details upcoming)

Personality: (Just notes thus far, will do a proper write up soon) Wise, but dirty old woman, stubborn, crotchety, doesn’t like strangers butting into her business, kind to mothers.

Appearances/notable mentions:
The Gypsy Purge of Airopa: Parte Uno (non-canonical fic, separate from the ZU timeline, but good descriptions of her and her house, and includes some backstory on one of her ancestors, and gypsy history that does relate to ZU)
Humans and Dragons [Stryder and Tirry]
A River of Trouble [Zorolo]
His Imperial Majesty (aftermath following "A River of Trouble")
The Bakalche Tree [Stryder, Ruki, Cookie]
