Goodbye... A poem of parting

Hello everyone - this is my first post on the Zelda Forums, and I am glad to be here...

Here is a poem about what is, to me, one of the most memorable moments in Link's journey.

Goodbye…

How helpless I felt, that night. Perched there;
watching down below.

The forest spoke through its ambiance; the moonlight was pale

and the two were joined—for perhaps the last time
on the old wooden bridge.

She, with tears in her eyes; he trying to hold his back
unsuccessfully.

I listened to their words
and I watched…

He didn’t want to go, though by his movements, and the look in his eyes, I could see that he felt he must.
“If I stay; if I do not go…”

She hushed him, and there was silence.

A wind formed, first within the leafy branches, then flowed through her soft and curly hair;
and then through his.

Her green eyes were large and they gazed deeply into his – questioning – but knowing.
“Time fades away,” she whispered, “but never will my love for you.”

He could hold his tears back no more, and they rained from his eyes; no, from his heart.
She cried uncontrollably.

How could destiny be so cruel?
She loved him so deeply as to feel him inside herself.
And she was the love of his life. The only one who he felt truly knew him.

They hugged each other tightly, as though the world around them would fall apart –
and I wanted desperately to help them.
Oh how I yearned to comfort them both.
But alas, I could not with the body I had, perched high up in that tree.

Nothing could stop the tears, and nothing could take the pain away.
“…I…”

She tried to be strong for him, and put her finger to his lips.
At that moment, I saw what I can only describe as a breaking away; not a leap of faith,
but a leap of desperate hope – hope of being reunited someday.
He took a step back, and then ran. I can only assume that it was because he wanted to go before his doubt of that reunion grew any stronger.
Or perhaps, he felt that if he waited a moment longer, the pain he was feeling would grow even larger.

Whatever it was, he disappeared from the bridge that night, and she stood there alone;
crying so hard that her heart lurched forward and she felt as though it may implode upon itself.

I couldn’t bear to watch her.

I flew from that tree, wishing there was something more I could do.

That is when I thought, “Perhaps there is…”
