(Fan/Sf) Scarlette Fever [G]

this is a story i wrote originally for school, but i really liked it and am planning to write a full-length book of it. i hope you enjoy it:

Quote:
(scarlette Fever)

Chapter one

Scarlette yawned. She was bored. Very, very bored.
“Scarlette Redd!” she jumped and looked up to see her English teacher, Mr. Fleck, glaring at her.
“How dare you yawn in my lesson!” he said, still glaring. “well, seeing as you seem to know enough about what I was saying as to not listen, why don’t you come up and teach the class, hmm?”
This was obviously a threat rather than an offer. Scarlette knew this. And yet, she just couldn’t resist provoking him. “All right” she said with a shrug, standing up. She walked to the front of the class, and turned round to face everyone. She flicked her eyes to the board, and saw the heading. “Good Grammar” she began “there are many common mist-”
“Sit down!” Mr. Fleck screamed, almost crying in fury. Scarlette looked at him, feigning confusion. “But sir-”
“No buts!” he screamed again. Scarlette shrugged again, and walked back to her desk. “See me after class” he snarled as she passed him.
Scarlette just smiled and walked back to her seat, taking in the amused faces of the class. Except one, she noticed, Billy, the teacher’s pet was staring at her coldly, his deep purple eyes bearing into her.
“That,” she thought to herself, “was so great.”

“So” said Mr. Fleck “you think it’s funny to mock your teachers, do you?” they were in the classroom. Everyone else had gone off for lunch.
Scarlette knew it would only worsen her punishment, but again, she just couldn’t resist. “No” she said, shaking her head “just you.” Mr Fleck’s eye twitched, but he didn’t say anything. He just went to his desk and took out a piece of paper. He scribbled something down it and handed it to her. It read:

I will not be rude to my teachers
Write out the above 2000 times

She sighed. Inside she was celebrating, but, for once, she decided to keep quiet. She acted meek and defeated as she put the sheet in her bag.
“I’ll expect that in tomorrow,” her teacher said, grinning cruelly. Scarlette just stalked
Out slowly. As soon as she was out of sight of Mr. Fleck, she ran out to the grounds.
Swinging her bag off, she took out her Glider, unfolded it, and hopped on. She checked her watch. 1.15. Easily enough time to get home and back. Rising into the air, she flew off in the direction of her home. She looked down at the people below her, searching for anyone she knew. Ripping her mobile from her pocket, she keyed in her brother’s number and waited for him to pick up. “Scar?” said her brother’s voice. “Felix!” she said “I’ve got a job for you”
Felix sighed
“Let me guess” he said “Mr Fleck?”
“Yeah”
“Scar, you really need to stop getting into trouble. Even if the punishments aren’t too bad, if you make a teacher hate you, your school life won’t be very nice”
“Uh, Felix, sorry, but how the hell would you know? All of your teachers loved you, being the bloody genius you are.”
“Yes, but I didn’t mock them and annoy them like you do, ‘else they would’ve hated me just as much as Mr. Fleck hates you. Anyway, what exactly is it you need me to do?”
Scarlette swung her bag around and fished out the piece of paper. “I need you to duplicate something, uh, two thousand times, with flaws. That okay?”
Felix sighed “all right” he said “are you nearly here?”
Scarlette looked down, and saw her house just below her.
“Just landing. Hang on.”

As she landed on the ground, Scarlette checked her watch again. 1.25. Great time. She folded up her Glider and put in her bag, then jogged to the front door. Opening it, she called out, “Felix?”
“In my room!” came his reply from upstairs. Dumping her bag on the floor, she thundered up the stairs, still holding the lines.
When she got to the landing she headed straight for her brothers room. She opened the door and walked in, taking a look at his various paintings and drawings on the wall. Despite the fact that most of them she had seen many times before, Scarlette was still hugely impressed with her brother’s skill. After admiring his work, she looked round and saw her brother sitting hunched at his desk, a pencil in his hand, drawing something carefully. She walked over to him.
“Hi Scar” he said, not looking up “so what is it you want me to dupe?”
“Hang on” she said, and quickly scribbled down one of the 2000 lines she had. “There” she said, handing him it.
“Hmm” he said, sitting up and looking at it. “I’ll need some more paper, but yeah, this seems easy enough.” She handed him two dozen sheets of paper from his massive pile. He looked closely at the words, then traced what she had written with his finger “flaws, right?” he said as he did so. Scarlette nodded, then, realising he couldn’t see her, said yes.
“Sure. Simple enough” he continued tracing the words with his finger, then, with his other hand, he spread all twenty-four sheets out on his desk, and waved the hand he was tracing with over them all. Immediately, the words she had written were reproduced, flaws and all.
“Nice. Thanks Felix” She smiled as she gathered up the paper. She loved having a magician as a little brother.
“Any time” Felix replied, getting back to his drawing.
“Right” said Scarlette “back to school then, see you later”
“Okay”

“Right” said Scarlette “See you at the Arena at four?”
“Sure” Christina, Scarlette’s best friend, replied, nodding.
“See you then”
It was the end of school, and everyone was going home. Scarlette unfolded her Glider, hopped on, and flew off. She cranked up the speed to 80mph and zoomed through the air, ducking and diving in the wind. She smiled. She loved flying fast. It was so exhilarating.
She spotted her house down bellow, and swooped down to the roof. She jumped off her Glider, leaving it floating off the ground, and opened the trapdoor to her room with her key.
She dropped down into her room and dumped her bag on the floor. She stretched her cramped muscles to loosen them up a little. She looked around her room, and saw her Blaster lying on a chair. Quickly she got changed out of her school uniform and into her normal clothes, then picked up her Blaster and climbed up out of the trapdoor again.
She closed and locked it quietly, then walked to the side of the roof, the one facing the street, and looked over the side into the window of her brother’s room.
She could see Felix, at his desk by the window, drawing as usual. She lightly knocked on the window, but Felix didn’t notice.
Scarlette stifled a laugh. She knocked slightly harder. Again, no reaction. She then took out her Blaster, aimed, and shot the window. There was an almighty CRACK as the shot bounced off the window. She was satisfied to see Felix fall off his chair. As he got up and looked at her she burst out laughing
“Yeah, very funny, Scar” he said, opening the window.
Scarlette was still giggling
“Sorry, I just couldn’t resist. I knocked twice before that, and you didn’t even notice, you were so engrossed in what you were doing”
“Yup” he chuckled “sounds like me”
“Well, see you later.”
“Bye” smiled Felix, closing the window.
Scarlette smiled and walked back to her Glider. She climbed on and rose up into the air. Holding her Blaster, she flew off in the direction of the Arena. A strong wind whipped up. She did a loop in the air, the wind accelerating her when she got to the top.
She looked around and saw one of her friends, Sergio, flying low in the same direction as her. She smiled and took aim with her Blaster. She fired a shot at his Glider, and grinned as it flew out from under him.
He fell onto the ground hard, and rubbed his back as he stood up. Scarlette glided over to him and offered her hand.
“Sorry” she smiled as she helped him back onto his Glider.
“It’s all right” he replied, smiling a little “want to race to the Arena?”
Scarlette considered “all right” she said, nodding
Sergio grinned “on three” he said “three!”
And they were off. Scarlette cranked up her Glider’s speed, pulling ahead of Sergio. She corkscrewed as she flew, blowing air into his face.
She ducked and dived through the air, the scenery rushing past. Looking over her shoulder, she saw Sergio catching her up, his long dark hair blowing across his face, and wearing a determined expression. She grimaced and pushed her Glider faster. She looked over her shoulder again, but Sergio was still keeping up. Grimacing again, she pushed her Glider as fast as it would go.
She was going unbelievably fast now, nearly 200mph. She glanced behind her yet again, and grinned as she saw Sergio falling behind.
She turned back to face the way she was going, and swerved out of the way as she nearly crashed into a wall. Looking around, she saw the Arena a few metres off. She sped towards it, slowing down as she touched the ground. Spinning around, she saw Sergio tumbling towards her.
“I win” she smiled as he got up
“Yeah” he agreed, rubbing his back.
They had a look around. The Arena wasn’t a proper fighting arena, just a disused building sight, with all the cement long dried up now, but, as the people building on it had run out of money, it was mostly just iron with a few brick walls.
With its maze-like structure and many floors, it was perfect for Glider fights.
“Who else’s is here, I wonder,” said Scarlette, as she looked around. She spotted Christina talking to someone on her mobile, and jogged over to her.
“Christina!” she shouted
Christina turned round. “Gotta go” she said into her mobile “Scarlette!” she said, striding over to her
“Did you see me whipping Sergio’s as in that race?” Scarlette asked
“Yeah!” Christina replied, grinning
“Who are we waiting for?” asked Scarlette, glancing around.
Christina looked as well “I think that’s everyone” she said, looking all around to make sure “yup that’s them. Let’s start”
Scarlette nodded, grinning, and rose on her Glider into the air. She fired a couple of shots at various people, alerting them. Soon everyone was ready.
“Right!” shouted Christina “Me and Scarlette’ll pick teams.” She nodded at Scarlette to go first
“Sergio” she said, and he floated over to her.
“Lucy” said Christina, and Lucy floated over to her.
Once the teams were decided, they discussed their strategy for a few minutes
“I’ll take care of Christina” said Scarlette quietly to her team-mates “Sergio, you deal with Micky. Richard, Lucy. Lara, Simon. And Katie, Amy. Right. Let’s blow them apart.”
They all nodded and broke apart.
“We’re ready!” Scarlette shouted to the others. Christina’s team quickly muttered something to each other, and then nodded back at her
“Go!” shouted Scarlette, and aimed for Christina. But she was surprised to see that Christina was not going for her as she’d expected, but instead went, along with the rest of her team, for Katie. They all fired at the same time, in slightly different places, so Katie couldn’t dodge. All of the shots hit, and she fell to the ground hard.
Scarlette realised what they were doing. Ganging up on the weaker members of the team. The others realised this to, and started firing at them. But they were ducking and diving all over the place, so hardly any shots hit.
Next they went for Richard. They were still moving as they shot, but Scarlette managed to hit Simon square in the chest, and he flew off his Glider onto the ground. Unfortunately Richard followed him.
Scarlette tried to get a few shots in, but the few that did hit didn’t do very much damage. Their next target was Lara. However, she was a bit better than Richard and Katie, and managed to knock Lucy over before she, to, fell.
Scarlette looked at Sergio. They were the only ones left. She looked back at Christina and her team. They were all aiming for Sergio as they sped along she fired a few shots at Micky, and managed to unbalance him, but he stayed on his Glider.
Scarlette swore to herself as they fired and Sergio flew off his Glider and hit a wall close by. He slid down it in pain.
Scarlette shuddered and turned back to her opponents. They were circling her, they’re Blasters aimed for her chest. She fired a few shots in their general direction, but all except one missed. They all fired at once. Scarlette saw all three shots speeding towards her, and just before they hit, she leapt from her Glider and grabbed a metal beam above her. Swinging herself on top of it, she fired a wave of shots at Amy. One hit the front of her Glider hard, and she was catapulted off it. Scarlette caught a look of annoyance, anger, and fear as Amy flew through the air.
And then there was two.
By this point Scarlette’s Glider had reached her level, and she leapt onto it just as Simon and Christina recovered from their shock and fired at her from below. Crouching down, she gripped the Glider with her hands and managed to keep her balance as the shots hit it. As the shots continued, she rose through the air until she was out of their range. She quickly looked down to see Christina following her upwards, but Simon out of sight. She looked around and saw him ducked behind a steel pillar, aiming his blaster at her. As he fired, she blasted the shot, sending it flying away, and sent a wave of return shots his way. One hit him on the leg, and he tripped up, crashing to the ground.
Two down, one to go.
Christina, by this point, had reached Scarlette’s level.
Sweat rolled down her temples as she faced her friend.
Christina inched forward, her Blaster tight in her hand, ready to fire. They slowly circled each other. Scarlette caught sight of the ground out of the corner of her eye. It was a long way down.
Christina stared at her. Scarlette stared back.
God, Scarlette thought to herself, get on with it.
She sighed inwardly. She would have to start. She did a quick calculation in her head, then glanced down at the ground. Christina immediately fired a round of shots her way. But then, Scarlette was expecting that. She leapt off her Glider into the air, dodging the shots, then fired a few of her own.
One hit the side of Christina’s Glider, sending it spinning and unbalancing her. She recovered, but by then Scarlette was back on her Glider, her Blaster poised. Christina snarled at her, showing her pearly white teeth, and fired savagely at Scarlette.
However, yet again, Scarlette was expecting that, and pulled up the front of her Glider, using as a shield, then jumped from it, and while in the air she blasted the bottom of Christina’s Glider, flipping her off, and sending her hurling to the ground. After shooting, Scarlette snapped her head back to the ground, and grabbed a beam to her left.
Agony filled her as her shoulder was pulled from its socket. Tears of pain pricked her eyes, and she switched arms, before swinging herself up on top of the beam. She lay down and panted until she got her breath back. Her heart was thumping against her chest. She looked stiffly at the ground to see Sergio talking to Christina. Christina looking outraged, but Sergio was trying not to grin. Her friend must’ve just found out that she hadn’t won. Scarlette turned her head back to the sky, smiled, and passed out.

When she came to, most of her friends had gone. Only Christina and Sergio were still there. Sergio was crouching over her, looking worried, and Christina was standing up behind him, talking on her phone.
“I think she’s awake,” Sergio said to her, frowning slightly “Scarlette? Scarle-”
“What happened?” Scarlette asked, confused.
“You passed out on that beam there” Sergio said, nodding to a beam up above her. “Christina went up to get you. We were worried you might fall. You’ve been out for about 10 minutes. Christina’s called an ambulance. We think you’re arm might be badly injured.”
Scarlette looked at her arm. It was sticking out at an impossible angle.
“Does Felix know?”
Sergio shook his head “No. Should I call him?”
“Nah, he’ll just worry”
Sergio nodded “Okay”
Christina finished her conversation and came over to Scarlette “there’s an ambulance on its way” she said, smiling down at her friend.
Scarlette shook her head “no. I’m fine” she stood up “I need to get home”
Sergio grabbed her good arm “you’re not going anywhere” he said “you’re really hurt”
“I’m fine, seriously” she tried to walk away, but Sergio had a strong grip, and she was weak from her injury.
“Excuse me,” a voice said from behind them. The three of them turned round to see a short man wearing military fatigues walking over to them “May I have a look?” he asked Scarlette
Scarlette nodded “Go ahead”
The small man looked closely at her arm. As he was examining it, something about him reminded Scarlette of someone she’d met long ago.
“Sorry,” she said “not to be rude or anything, but are you a dwarf?”
“I am indeed” said the man without looking up “Name’s White. Captain Jimmy White of the Akran military”
He continued with his examination for about two more minutes, before he looked up and addressed Scarlette.
“You have a very serious injury there, young lady,” he said, “however, I believe I may be able to fix it.”
And before she could protest, he had wrapped his hands around her arm and clicked it back into its socket with a pop. Scarlette braced herself for the pain, but it didn’t come. In its place was a strange numbness around her shoulder. She looked at the dwarf,
“How did you do that? Are you a magician?”
“I am,” he said, “though not a very good one, and anyway, that wasn’t magic. Well, the pain numbing was, but the fixing of your arm wasn’t. That was basic medical procedure.”
At this point, the squeal of an ambulance came from the road.
“Leave this to me” said Jimmy, and he walked over to explain to the paramedics what had happened.
“Who was that?” Sergio asked Scarlette as Jimmy left.
“He says his name’s Jimmy. He’s with the Akran military” replied Scarlette.
Once he’d finished with the paramedics, Jimmy walked backed to where the three of them were waiting.
“Right,” he said, “that’s sorted. But, what did you say your name was?”
“Scarlette.” said Scarlette.
“Right. Scarlette. Well, I was going to ask you. I was watching you on your Glider up there, and I have to say, you have some astonishing skill. So, what I was going to say was, how would you like to join the military?”
Scarlette almost fell over from shock at this, but managed to steady herself.
“Are you serious?” she asked
Jimmy nodded.
“Of course. It’s not often, but we’ve taken on teenagers before. How old are you?”
“Sixteen”
Jimmy considered this.
“Yeah, I think that makes you old enough, so what do you say?”
“Umm…” mumbled Scarlette, unsure, “yeah, I’d like to, but I’d better ask my brother”
Jimmy seemed surprised “Why your brother? What of your parents?”
Scarlette shook her head “We don’t have parents. We lived in an Orphanage until we were eight, then Felix was discovered by the University, and they were so impressed they gave us a great house to live in, along with a place in the school, in exchange for Felix teaching for them when he graduated, which he did about three years ago now, but he only works there occasionally, giving advice to “exceptionally gifted” pupils, and advising the professors and stuff. He’s an artist usually. He’s the best I’ve ever met. He managed to pay for the house after selling about 12 of his paintings. He’s great”
Jimmy was silent through her speech, but finally spoke when she finished.
“Your brother,” he said, “He sounds like a genius. Why was the University so impressed with him?”
“Oh!” said Scarlette, “Sorry, I didn’t tell you. He’s a magician. A brilliant one”
Jimmy was clearly intrigued.
“Interesting,” said Jimmy, “what can he do?”
“Well,” said Scarlette, “He’s a telekinetic, he can turn himself just about invisible, he, umm… loads of stuff”
Jimmy seemed even more interested.
“Well, your brother sounds very interesting. He, too, might be an excellent addition to the military. May I accompany you home, so I can meet him in person?”
Scarlette considered.
“I suppose so, yeah”
Jimmy smiled broadly
“Hang on, I’ll just say bye to my friends and we can go.” said Scarlette, turning to her friends.
“Thanks for calling the ambulance and everything,” she said, smiling “see ya later?”
Christina and Sergio smiled and nodded. Scarlette smiled at them, then turned and called her Glider over. She stepped onto it, then rose up into the air, followed by Jimmy. Scarlette waved goodbye to her friends, then flew off, home.
