San Creation Myth...for school

Don't laugh. I had to write this for a history class I'm in. We were supposed to make up a creation story for the San tribe (some ancient African people or something) using four motifs of the creation archetype, trying to incorporate ideas that the San people might have had. I just whipped this up just now. It wasn't that bad, for a school assignment. I guess I don't mind fictitious writing assignments as much as nonfictitious...if that's a word.

If this should go in the fiction section, let me know. I just didn't think it was enough of anything to go there.

Right. Here we go. Let me know what you think.

--------------------------------

There was nothing but darkness. The world was not unlike a night sky without stars. Long ago, before any of the San were alive, the earth did not exist. It was only the god Kunji and his pets, a snake, a lion, and a rhino. When Kunji grew tired of the constant void, he decided he would create a world full of life, if only to satisfy his boredom. And so he took his pets and commanded them to create the earth.

The lion gracefully stretched his body into earth, and his golden mane became the fields of tall grass whispering in the breeze. The black, shiny snake slithered through the grasses, and she became a meandering stream, full of glistening water. Blocking out the dark nothingness, the huge body of the rhino painted the sky into a bluish gray, and light spread across the world. Kunji looked upon this world his animals had created, and he was happy. Something was missing, though.

He pulled from the grasses several animals - all kinds of land dwellers. Afterwards he created fish to live in the water and birds to soar through the sky. This pleased him, but there was still nothing on earth that resembled him. He would have to leave his mark on this world somehow. Stretching his fingers across the earth, he formed a man out of clay, similar in appearance to himself. Just one breath from his lips, and the human became alive.

Kunji knew he would have to make more than one, and it would be tiring to make many more. He decided he would make a way for the humans and animals to create more of each other. With this decision, he took more clay and molded it into a woman. He granted these humans power over the animals, and he instructed them not to grow too large in number. As he left the earth, he turned to look at it and smiled. Reflected in his eyes was a lively world that filled in the dark nothingness that had been there before. He was satisfied.

--------------------------------

Hehe...rather short, but that's how it's supposed to be.
