For most people, a cup of coffee or tea is enough to give them a head start in their morning. But for sleepyheads like me who could use an extra jolt out of the bed, sometimes a heavy metal track is a useful way to provide a good kick in the pants.
After their notorious Guitar Hero hit “Through the Fire and the Flames,” the popular heavy metal band Dragonforce returns with the promotion of Warp Speed Warriors, an upcoming album that pays tribute to a number of classic video games. As a teaser, they released a music video on YouTube with a new Zelda-inspired song, “Power of the Triforce,” that will accompany the album. The video has already reached views by the tens of thousands at the time of this writing.
The heavy metal track is sweeping the internet by storm for good reason. It’s a powerful rock ballad with elegant lyrics wrapped around a meaty center that calls to mind galloping into battle and tearing down strongholds in epic sword fights against Ganon and his dark forces. Link’s struggles to free the beloved land of Hyrule are revisited in this imaginative retelling. The song and music video contain clever forms of artistry (and generic orcs) that don’t directly challenge Nintendo copyright, but the lyrics are wonderfully stuffed with enough Zelda names and terms that fans will instantly recognize what the song is talking about.
The tune itself starts with a campy 1980’s vibe that gets down to the heavy metal business in short time. The poetic mood is gritty, but triumphant and frankly fun. I easily picture callbacks to dramatic scenes from A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess with this banger filled to the brim with electric guitar expression. And yes, the song is loud. Very loud. And you will be awake.
Dragonforce’s new album Warp Speed Warriors, along with the Zelda-inspired track “Power of the Triforce,” hits the music stands for purchase worldwide on March 15, 2024. Take a listen for yourself in the music video below.
