Despite only getting to see three days of events in the city, a lot happens in Clock Town. In between all of the panic induced by the falling moon, a thief named Sakon is running around making life worse for many of the residents of Clock Town. Though he never directly comes after Link, the effect Sakon has on Termina can be seen in many different places. Thankfully, Sakon isn’t much of a fighter, so Link is more than capable of fixing all the damage Sakon causes.
The core crime Sakon commits in the three day cycle of Termina is stealing the Bomb Shop’s delivery that is en route to the shop. At midnight on the first night, Sakon will attempt to steal the shipment from the old lady carrying it. As with many events in Majora’s Mask, there are several outcomes depending on Link’s action or inaction. If Link is present at North Clock Town at the time of the theft, he’ll be able to put a stop to the theft and get the Blast Mask for his troubles. This also ensure the bombs reach the Bomb Shop, meaning they’ll be available for purchase at the shop for the rest of the three day cycle.

If Link is not at North Clock Town, or fails to stop Sakon, then Sakon can be found later that night attempting to sell the stolen goods to the Curiosity Shop owner. Arriving during the correct time will allow Link to witness Sakon attempt to bargain with the owner for the price of the goods. Notably, the Curiosity Shop owner isn’t particularly happy with this, since he knows they’re stolen goods, but he still buys them regardless. This also causes the All-Night Mask to no longer be available from the Curiosity Shop for the rest of the cycle, as it’ll be replaced with Sakon’s bombs. Letting the robbery happen in North Clock Town isn’t all bad, though. A certain young man is currently staying in the back of the Curiosity Shop and is keeping a close eye on the Curiosity Shop patrons as he searches for a certain thief who stole a very important mask.

Allowing Sakon to successfully arrive at the Curiosity Shop ensures Kafei, who is watching the Curiosity Shop customers, identifies Sakon as the thief that stole his precious Sun Mask before the events of the game began. Now, knowing that Sakon is the culprit, Kafei makes his move, which allows the Couple’s Mask quest to be fully completed. Kafei and Link infiltrate Sakon’s Hideout in Ikana Valley, walking right into his house of traps, but managing to escape with the Sun Mask in tow at the end. Sakon’s Hideout is decked out with monsters, traps, and different minor stolen goods from all around Termina. He must be pretty upset he’s losing all of this once the moon hits.
Sakon is probably one of my favorite characters in Majora’s Mask, mainly thanks to the effect he has on the world. It always enamored me that such a minor character has such an impact on this world, yet the same can be said for many of Termina’s residents. There’s actually another outcome from Sakon’s theft of the Bomb Shop’s goods should Link choose to attempt to stop Sakon with a sharp object such as his Hookshot. The sharp object causes the bombs to explode, presumably killing Sakon, depriving Link of his Blast Mask, the Bomb Shop and Curiosity Shop of their bombs, and dooming Kafei to never be able to recover his Sun Mask from the hideout. I guess that goes to show that violence truly never is the answer!
