Bombers’ Notebook: Jovani

Humans go through their whole lives looking for something that ignites their hearts. When someone is passionate about something, it can consume every fiber of their being. This can often be a good thing, creating an opportunity for some amazing work. Diving head first into one’s interest can prove to be extremely beneficial for one’s life. Jovani from Twilight Princess, however, has a passion for money, and in his particular case, it is not a good thing.

When Link first meets him, Jovani is nothing more than a frozen gold statue.

Money can not buy happiness, but Jovani would rather cry in a a pile of gold than be poor. This is made clear when he sells his soul to Imp Poes to become overwhelmingly wealthy. Now that Jovani is sitting on a plethora of gold and jewels, he realizes that, unfortunately, it is all he will ever do. The Poes he has sold his soul to have also made him and his cat Gengle into golden statues. This unfortunate turn of events for Jovani has taught him a valuable lesson. He learns that maybe he was in over his head, and when something literally becomes all that you are, it is probably not a good thing.

Cue the Hero of Twilight, Link, who stumbles across the golden statue that makes a plea for help. Jovani asks Link to acquire the souls of Poes to lift his curse. During Link’s quest, he will come across multiple Poe enemies that he can slay, rewarding him with their souls. After acquiring certain amounts of them, Jovani’s curse will start to lift. First, Jovani and Gengle will both be able to move; then, after eventually acquiring 60 souls, Jovani will be returned to human form. This means that his curse is finally lifted.

It is a great thing that the curse has been removed, but Jovani’s troubles are still not over. After he is freed, Link can find him at Telma’s Bar, where he finds out that his girlfriend has found another man during his absence. The unfortunate turn of events in Jovani’s life is quite the emotional roller coaster. On the one hand, he has been freed, but on the other, he has lost the love of his life.

Jovani’s story is a perfect example of why you should be careful what you wish for. Having money is not everything that one might think it is, and Jovani learns this lesson the hard way. His tragic story teaches Link and the player that wealth can cause you to lose the thing that makes your life truly rich. For completing Jovani’s quest, Link will recieve the ability to get 200 Rupees whenever he pleases. This is ironic, because it is the perfect source of fuel for the Magic Armor. The irony comes in when you realize that if Link runs out of Rupees, the Magic Armor will become very stiff—you know, like a statue.
