In spite of hardware part shortages affecting the production of Nintendo Switch consoles, the system is nonetheless thriving. Data provided by Famitsu (and shared with GamesIndustry.biz) shows that Nintendo has sold over 5.3 million Switch consoles in 2021 at Japanese retail locations.
The data accounts for Switch sales between December 28, 2020, and December 19th, 2021, and includes the sales of both the standard and Lite as well as the newer OLED models. The Nintendo Switch sold nearly five times as many consoles as other popular units combined, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, and the Nintendo 3DS.
The Switch’s stellar performance is likely driven by the addition of the OLED console, as well as the variety of great titles available on the unit. Highly anticipated upcoming titles, such as the Breath of the Wild sequel and others set for release in 2022, will likely keep the momentum going.
