Medli’s Melodies: Outset Island groovy cover

Something that I always look forward to when starting a new Zelda adventure is where the game starts and the first impression it gives — whether it’s Link walking out of his house to a friend greeting him in Kokiri Forest, with woodwinds creating a happy, fun atmosphere, or Link leading Epona back to Ordon Village in the twilight hour in an environment filled with a rural, rancher vibe.

The Wind Waker is no stranger to the trend of music creating a great first impression. After watching the introductory story that will make anyone think of the days of yore, the game shifts to a lighthearted instrumental lead-in with a bird’s eye view of Outset Island. The stage is set for the peaceful island life that Link, his family, and his neighbors have been leading. Erek Ladd, the musician behind Retro Game Remix, brings a breath of fresh funky island air to Outset Island’s iconic theme.

Personally, I feel that the island vibe is upheld by the guitar holding the notes out, and the bass just adds another layer that’s complemented by the drums. Something that The Wind Waker does well is ensuring the player can hear all of the instruments in a song. Go back and listen to the title theme and you can pick out the percussion, strings, and woodwind, or listen to the “Earth Temple Theme” for the percussion, didgeridoo, gong, and woodwinds. It’s nice to see Erek continue the trend of The Wind Waker‘s soundtrack while giving it a new feel that fans can find a sense of familiarity in.

Erek has done another cover of the series’ main theme as well as some covers of other game songs. You can check them out by going to his page from the video above or by clicking here.
