Nintendo President Furukawa discusses smartphones and dedicated consoles in gaming

Business website Nikkei recently published an interview with Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, in which he covered a myriad of topics. One of the most prevalent topics he talked about involved how smartphones are influencing the gaming market.

“With the rise in popularity of smartphones, our strategy is to grow the population of people who play video games,” Furukawa said. “People all over the world enjoying games by utilizing the various features of smartphones, personal computers, and dedicated gaming consoles.”

Despite the ubiquity of streaming, Furukawa has doubts about how that influences how gamers choose what to play. “I think the most important things there are the contents of a game as well as the kind of games you can play,” Furukawa said.

He does, however, note that “technological advances can make a big difference to the gaming experience itself.” Nintendo has definitely been a leader in advancing gaming technology with items such as the Wii Remote and the Nintendo Switch.
